The man saw the stick, and went off to commit suicide. This man lives in a trailer. The stick was of no importance to anything but the man. If it was on a path, you'd say "Oh look, there's a stick." But to this man, this stick represented all that he had.
SO why oh why would the sight of it on that fateful day make him commit suicide?

Ooh! I think I've got it!
Maybe all he had was time, as in he had some fatal condition and only had some time to live. He can't afford a house or even a clock so the stick is a sundial saying he has no time left. So, he decided to die before he has to die painfully from his condition.

Okay... Maybe it was a walking stick, and he saw the midget with the stick and thought he shrunk? Or I guess he could be a midget, too. Or maybe it's a circus trailer, and he thought he wasn't a midget anymore?
The best riddles just require thought, not complete and total abstraction. xp

Fine, fine... xp xp I'll keep playing:
Hunch pertaining to hint in white:
Are the two midgets maybe supposed to count as one person somehow? Two midgets who have only one stick .. but why would having to share be cause for suicide? Or, if the two are one guy then could they have killed eachother? Why would a stick promote suicide or homicide?

I guess we're not keeping the hint a secret anymore, so ...
I like the circus trailer thing. And I still think the two midgets are being counted as one guy. Circus=routines=...shticks?

Um. I don't know it- that really was just a guess. I think the whole idea of midgets is idiotic for a riddle.
I'm thinking if that was close, maybe he was blind and it was his cane? So therefore, he thought he grew and wasn't a midget anymore, as either he couldn't find it or it was bigger/smaller than normal and he thought he grew (and would have lost his livelihood in the circus)

The last part is totally right, but he wasn't blind and the stick had no practical use. Can you get the important bit?

Behatzlacha-S The last part is totally right, but he wasn't blind and the stick had no practical use. Can you get the important bit? He lost his livelihood in the circus since he's no longer a midget (or so he thinks because his stick is shorter?)
