*The night progressed and finally effaced as the sun climbed up from behind the still wilderness. Seth woke up to the sound of a rooster crowing and War neighing loudly. As Seth looked out the window a rattlesnake was being trampled to death by the startled stallion. Quickly storming out of the house, still in high night clothes, Seth calmed the stallion and threw the mashed limp snake carcass into some bushes. He hadnt been bitten and with the relief of that Seth walked back inside after tossing some hay from the mare's pen to him. He walked back inside, the thick smell of eggs and bacon and beans on the stove. Chance's wife was up and cooking, a newspaper folded on the table and a pot steaming the kitchen out.*

*As Mary, Chance's wife, stirred the pot of steaming beans a few strands of hair fell out of it's bun, curling like tendrils round and round, growing tighter and smaller as the heat refused to die. She picked the pot up, two wool panhandles gripped tightly to the pot, she set it in the sink, hissing sharply as the water touched it. She slid some of the hearty breakfast onto an old chipped plate, buiscuits on another, spooning on thick gravy and beans. Chance had walked in and was reading the paper, calling up to Seth.*

*As Seth walked down the stairs he took a seat, dressed and ready to go.*

What's that mares name, anyhow, Chance?

*Blankly, Chance awnsered his quiestions, paying half attention.*

..Name..?..Hm..I spose thats..Up to you..I hadn't given her one..

*Folding the paper on his lap, a plate of food was placed before him as well as before Seth along with two cups of thick, dark coffee. Mary walked into another room, leaving the men to their buisness. Seth reached into his pocket, pulling out five coins and stacking them on the table.*

Whats the extra half for? I only asked fifteen.

Well, I need a halter to bring 'er home, don't I?

I 'spose your right..Theres one hanging on the post out there your welcome to..She was just shoed, as well, no need to check on that for a while..She's a frisky one, seems she's always in heat..Nonstop..

How many foals has she had?

None! I had ta pen her away from my stallion, she ain't been pregnant long as I owned her..It's worked out good so far..

*Several minutes of silence passed, and Seth finished off his plate and cup. As he headed outside he walked around the side of the house where the mare waited anxiously. She sniffed the man over well as if he were a stallion and eagrely pushed her muzzle into the halter, walking ahead of him as War came into view. She nosed him everywhere, sniffing and nuzzling. Seth tied her leadrope to the saddle, mounting War and trotting down the steep road. The three went for miles and hours until at noon they finally arrived home. Approaching the gate Seth realized it was open, the mares where gone and with greif and burden in his chest he figured he would never see them again, looking off into the wide wilderness.*

*He closed the gate behind him, leading War and the mare towards the stables. As War was undressed from his saddle and bridle and blanket, he quickly shot out into the pasture, galloping as fast as he pleased, anxiously followed by the mare as her rope was taken away, a halter still on her head. She chased after him like a cat would a mouse, his tail held high and a prance arising in each step, giving him an angelic look. As the two froliced War soon became intrested in her, like Chance had said she was, in fact, in heat. Nipping at her flanks she finally stood in one place, rearing her head and looking back as he went about his stallion-like buisness.*

*As War pulled away from the new golden mare, he watched as Saphire walked back towards the fence. He galloped towards it, greeting her and sniffing her, wondering where she had been and who that downy white mare was. The golden stringy horse stayed back in the pasture, simply watching from a distance. Seth walked out of his house, surprisedly eyeing his sister's mare at the gate. As he made his way over he realized that Chaska was still missing, hoping he wouldent stumble upon her carcass while herding his feedlot cattle into market, he opened the gate and called out her name, also shouting about sugar cubes. She had to recoognize the sound of the way "Sugar cubes" was pranounced. After squinting at the horizon for several minutes, Seth turned away, sighing and walked to the winter barn.*

*The large, heavy doors of the barn slid open one after the other, shedding light into the dim barn. It was a dank place, seldom cleaned because of the staggering size. It smelled of manure and wet hay, sheep's wool and in one corner, rotton eggs. The rats would occassionally roll some in from the chicken coop. In one stall a great beast of burden stirred, opening it's large deep eyes to the sunlight beyond the heavy doors of the barn. He raised his head and stamped his feet softly, ready to get out of that stall and into the light.*

*As Seth swung the heavy metal door open, dented here and there from angry stallions and startled mares, the giant horse stepped out, his coat deep brown and his legs fluffy white, flamboyant with thick feathers. His face was white, splashes on his stomach and flanks. His tail was snowcapped and his mane a dusty, mousy brown. He eagrely stood as Seth slid a bridle on and grabbed a bucket of grooming things. The two stepped into the light and he was tied to a metal post near the summer stable. As the other horses came to inspect, the new mare first to be nosing him and sniffing him, he gave them friendly noses and nuzzles back, his ears pricked and his tail high.*

Easy, Jack...Just calm down old boy..

*Seth brushed Jack's mane, weaving ribbons into locks as he went, tying them tight and short. Half and hour passed and the stallion grew anxious and hungry, a bucket of feet and water was placed at his feet. Another hour and his tail was bunded up in a bow, his feathers brushed and his coat shining and trimmed. He was now as beautiful as any prized show horse, his step as graceful, too.*

*As Jack finished, he untied the stallion and led him back into he barn, Jack lagging behind with the thought of being locked up once again in his head. Instead, Seth positioned him before a buggy and hitched him up, climbing into it and driving the horse out the backside of the barn, around the fence and into town. As they rode into town, Jack prancing the whole way, they pulled before the general store and just as they did Anne stepped out into an alleyway from her upstairs apartment, all gussied up.*

You look lovely this evening, young lady.

*He smiled kindly*

Wow..I never saw a horse so big, Seth..Why haven tI' ever heard of thisun? He's so big and beautiful..

Well, he doesnt get out much..He always seems to step right over the fence jus ta bout and gallop right on down th' road.

Well he looks right excited ta be out of wha tever old barn you keep him in.

*Jack sniffed about the young lady, his soft whiskers tickling her hands and face.*

Ready to go, ma'am?

I sure am.

*She said, smiling warmly as she, too, climbed into the buggy and Jack carted them down the road to The Hall where all events were held. It was a beautiful building inside and out, as they tied Jack to the post and walked inside, the doors opened and revealed a beautiful wide ballroom with most of the town inside, dancing, talking and drinking up a jolly good time.*

Saphire held her head high and nodded it. "See you." Saphire snorted. She watched the mare wander back into the wilderness, and hid behind a tree, as Seth left on Jake heading towards the town. Once he was out of sight, Saphire walked over to the pasture gate and chewed on the lock. Sliding the lock opened, she backed up, as the gate swung opened. Once in the pasture she closed the door, and it took her at least six minutes to lock the gate. By then, War came over to her, and she extange a nicker to him. She rubbed her head against his neck affecintly. Glancing up from War, she watched the golden mare courisly, wondering excatly what she was doing in her pasture. Saphire's ears pircked her and she let a soft nicker escape from her. She turned back to War and whisper to him. "Who is she?"

*I steal mares and fight stallions, thats what I do..He looked at her with a menacing smile until the white mare waundered up and he let her off without a struggle to keep her his.*

*Back at the pasture, War was eyeing the odd new mare as if he had never seen her before, either.*

She came back with me and Seth from his friend's house..She's fairly quiet..

*The mare walked up to them, nuzzling War and touching her nose to Saphire, with little intrest.*

She hasn't got a name yet

*Quietly, she raised her head and began to speak.*

The man..He used to call me Dasher..

Saphire nodded softly. She sniffed the mare from neck to bottom. "Saphire, is what they call me."
