Dolls aren't just dolls, they're the personification of characters we have in our head. We'd know their personalities. Sure, we know they aren't really living, but they are who we make them to be, could be an annoyance, a doll or a dear friend. Think of how close some people are to childhood items, a 'special blankie' or a well loved stuffed animal. We get the same emotional attachments as we can get to other items, because we've had them, and had experiences with them, living or not.

I am totally one the side of dolls not being just dolls! 4laugh I love my boys as I love to call them, because they are so amzingly like people. they have a personality and a uniqe look. I think of them as beings. I know I gave them those characteristics but even we are given qualities and personality traits by others. I am sad that there are people who think the others are just dolls...poor poor people have you no imagination? no creativity that you are blind to see the beauty that "dolls" can be more! if so then I can only feel pity for you. crying

Arekyakaito, not everyone collects dolls for the sake of obtaining a physical form of a character. What about those who collect dolls for the sake of owning something pretty? Owning something different? What about someone in it for the money, the investment?
Honestly Seki, that's really creepy if you think about it from an impartial standpoint.
And prior to January, I would've thought you were downright batshit for thinking and saying something like that. An object, how can an object be more than what it is, I would think. It's completely subjective, but I think most people who think like that about our dolls would change their opinion with enough exposure to them.
Perhaps it's peer pressure or just something about them and their lifelikeness, but I certainly know I would argue with anyone baselessly that dolls are like little people... but not are. I feel like this is a child in my hands, a child I need to take care of, a little thing that depends on me utterly and is mine. To me the doll is not a character or an object, anymore at least, I have taken to calling him my kid. My little child.
And prior to November, if I heard someone else say what I have admitted, I would think they are crazy. But it's something you have to experience, I suppose... To each his own.

I'm not sure how they get assigned personalities, but it happens. Even with grown and fairly sane adults. XD They *seem* to want, like, and dislike, or outright loathe things. But when it all comes down to it, they are just dolls.
I will joke around with doll-owning friends, or people who are interested in the hobby and want a doll that mine have this little personality.
I have to say that my guy looks so adorable and content when I have him all snuggled up on me.
It's really a psychological thing, I assume. The dolls look very lifelike. The way the light hits them can make them take on various expressions.
I don't think there's any harm in it, as it just means that your imagination is alive. Society tries to teach you that as an adult, your imagination needs to go to the wayside for a 9-5 job, sports car, wife/husband, dog, 2.3 children and a picket fence. It's perfectly healthy to keep your imagination alive. And if you do it through resin dolls, there's no harm in it.
I mean, I find myself thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if my guy or girl were real?" But if they were, I couldn't dress them, snuggle them like I do, or leave them sitting near me on my desk to enjoy... or switch their heads and photograph while giggling isanely.
It's weird because, even though I consider myself to be very in touch with my childhood to stay creative and continue to improve my art... I don't play anymore. I collect toys, but they all just stay on a shelf. I don't go out and play because... well, It looks kind of weird when an adult does it. XD But through dolls I'm able to keep that alive. And it's pretty darn awesomesauce.
It should only be a problem when that line of fantasy and reality is entirely blurred, and you actually BELIEVE that your resin buddy is a real human, you neglect your real-life needs and obligations for them, go into debt buying for them... etc.

Why do we assign inanimate objects personalities? I give my dolls personalities since it is something I have always done with most toys. It makes me want to play with them and interact with them without feeling like they are empty objects that have no meaning.
Why do we make up a fantasy world or backstory about them? Because we all have back stories and it helps give an incite to the character. Fantasy worlds are a bonus, in my books anyway, as who wouldn't want to explore some strange place or hunt down treasure or be the hero.
Why do we give them names and treat them like humans? For the most part when you are a child and you were given a doll, you were basically told that it was your baby. I guess it becomes a assoication of past things and also, it helps come close them.
Why is it a common theme for dollfies to be gay for other dolls [and straight only for their owners]? Never experianced it to be honest, mind you I guess different doll owners from around the world act differently.
Is this like childhood where our baby blankets and teddy bears had names? My teddies, dolls and ponies had names. Plus a part of me never seems to grow up.
Is this like making the person we wish we never were? For me no, I've been through alot and I don't want my dolls to go through that.
What does the doll hobby mean to you? Part of being big kid and having some great dolls.

I have to say that now that I think about it , well part of being a doll owner is the training involved. When a chil is small and they have a baby doll , its about imitating thier parents or other parents that they have seen with babies . Or treating the doll like a freind and interacting with them as such , or even treating them like a lover or someone more intimate ( not anything overt , just the sort of cuddling and codeling that people do with thier dolls . Its all about training yourself to be whateven you need to. Now this isnnt exactly what I think its all about but this is as i see it another facet of the relationships we have with our dolls.

Why do we assign inanimate objects personalities? I would say my doll would be given a personality of my own. Either that or she would have a personality that I wish I could have . . .
Why do we make up a fantasy world or backstory about them? I think people might make up backstories to their dolls to either get something out that people don't know about them, they like making things up, or they're living through their doll (if that even makes sense) by making up a life for them that they never got to have and wish they did.
Why do we give them names and treat them like humans? I'm pretty sure that even when I was little, I named all my dolls . . . and it just seems right to give it a nam. Wtf would you pay 300-600 or so for a doll and then let it sit there, not give it a name or anything. I can see like collecting . . . but you need to make use of something that costs that much lol. I think that would be like buying a PS3 and never using it. Treating them like humans . . . they're play things. I treated my barbies like effing humans . . .
Why is it a common theme for dollfies to be gay for other dolls [and straight only for their owners]? This one . . . I have no clue. People trying to say something through their dolls? Lol. Idk. My dollfie won't have a sexual preference. She shall be A sexual rofl.
Is this like childhood where our baby blankets and teddy bears had names? I really do think so lol. Grown-up toys biggrin
Is this like making the person we wish we never were? I've said that a few times. I think so yes.
What does the doll hobby mean to you? I REALLY wants kids and I think this can be a way for me to get that fixation out of my head until I'm ready for a child biggrin

I think they're beautiful, and I would love to collect them. But yeahh, I wouldn't go so far as to give them extensive backgrounds and hook them up with other dolls o_o that's kind of creepy a name, and a bit of background, maybe. But I prefer to just admire them. (:

♥♥♥♥And when she's pressed, she will undress... I always thought that all of that was pretty freaking ridiculous too and then I got Delia. It's just a shitload of coincidences, but a lot of times, it honestly does seem like they have their own personalities. Like Delia hates anything girly and as soon as I try to put her in anything frilly she's a pain in the a** to get clothes on. It's freaky sometimes. And yeah, it is a projection of our own personalities, but it gets a little real once you actually have them. And then she's boxing clever. ♥♥♥♥

I dunno I've always gave life to inanimate objects, from stuff toys to dolls.
I just do. Maybe I just have a great sense of imagination or I really do see personalities.
I have yet to have a doll though, so I can't say much.

`MaliceMizer So, I ask you, Why do we assign inanimate objects personalities? Why do we make up a fantasy world or backstory about them? Why do we give them names and treat them like humans? Why is it a common theme for dollfies to be gay for other dolls [and straight only for their owners]? Is this like childhood where our baby blankets and teddy bears had names? Is this like making the person we wish we never were? What does the doll hobby mean to you?
1) Because it seems to be an innate part of the human condition and a way in which we relate to things? The fact that dollfies tend to be rather anatomically correct (toenails, fingernails, bellybuttons, very expressive faces) just makes it easier to do. 2) Backstories, I feel, are things that just sort of evolve. You (general) have already given your dollfie human characteristics and a name, so giving it a narrative just seems to make sense. 3) Naming things is a very human thing to do. We (general) name our pets, our cars, our plants, our computers, our toys, our characters, our children... Names also help to personalize things, differentiate between identical objects, and identify models. Again, the human-like appearance of dollfies factors in in this. 4) Probably the same reason(ing) driving slash/yaoi and Mary Sue/Author Avatar fic. Predominantly young and female, guy on guy is hot/if one pretty boy is good than two together is better, who doesn't want to fantasize about themselves with a hot guy. 5) Possibly; the whole naming thing does seem to start when we're young. 6) I think depends on how a person creates characters. For some that could be true, but for others who their dollie 'is' doesn't go beyond interesting character concept. 7) For me, this hobby means yet another fun money sink, way to meet people, an excuse to feed my knitting habbit, and a (retroactive) justification for holding on to my mother's quilting stash (despite the fact that I can't really sew).

I see how it's going back to being a kid or being creative like creating a story or character. It's a creative outlet like roleplaying or drawing, but there are people who get too obsessive. Of course, that goes for anything. There are always the people that go over the edge. I have to say I am actually worried about doing that. I'll give mine a name, probably goof off...I don't want to have conversations with him though..that's too much and I know it.

The thing is my dolls, or most of them anyhow there's some that just added on because I loved their look and had to have them; they're based on roleplay characters of mine, so they had a backstory before they even had a physical form. Like a character of a story I've created them, and knowing how they'd react in certain situations give them emotions within my head.
That said the ones who were added on without a character in mind, they developed their own with some quirks they show but they're not so extensive as my character dolls. I'm not as attached to them though and often find myself thinking about selling them because of this.

If it sounds to weird I'm sorry >.>
I'm an only child no half siblings nothing just me and my parents so I always gave life to things like dolls stuffed animals and all of that and till this day I still do. It's fun to have a little friend around to tell your secrets too and stuff. I'm all for giving them their own cute little personalities it makes owning them more fun *if they consider you an owner that is* XD and Idk... just makes it a funner hobby.

Why do we assign inanimate objects personalities? I think it is a comfort thing something that we do to give ourselves comfort, and to fuel our imagination! It is a character in my opinion that is why we name something, once its named it has a disposition to have personality. Why do we make up a fantasy world or backstory about them? A doll with a name is just a shell. So she has a name how old is she/he what makes him special so on we build from the name into this character similar to writing a book. Why do we give them names and treat them like humans? They are already named before we get them, this sets you up that they should have a name, so we give them one. Why not stick to company name though? Well for some they do others we give them that character that builds their personality. I think we change the name because it is making it more personal for you. Why is it a common theme for dollfies to be gay for other dolls [and straight only for their owners]? This I am entirely unsure on, I think it is all about fantasy and curiosity? Is this like childhood where our baby blankets and teddy bears had names? No I don't think so, but then again I never named my blanket or stuffed animals. Is this like making the person we wish we never were? I don't think so I think we imposed some of our characteristics on them, and even some of our desires but not everything. What does the doll hobby mean to you? Well I like sewing, photography and making stories and talking with people with like interest, so to me it is something that is what it is a hobby something I can enjoy in my free time!
