Yuurei eyed his motions and began to laugh softly but quickly remembered they were playing tag in time to dodge his slow moving paw. She swam backwards some distance and turned back at him to stick her tongue at him. "Too slow!" She yelped, splashing him with water. He looks like a shark... For once she actually agreed with the young presence she had played with earlier. Forgetting herself, she looked towards the shore where the pup was pacing. "You're right, he really does. He'd make a very cute shark." She said, sticking her tongue out at him. What?! Oh come on, I am so much cuter than he is! "No, most definitely not..." That was certainly a first. She never thought that about anyone before. Shaking her head, she looked back at Conner and smiled. "I didn't know you were half shark Conner." She teased. Remembering an old movie she had once seen, she began to swim backwards while humming the Jaws theme.

Conner laughed, batting a paw at the water in the air comming at him. "Want me to move faster?" He called playfully. When Yuurei started talking, Conner followed her gaze to the shore. The empty shore. 'Huh? Is she really that much like the music girls?' He asked himself. Her comment aboiut him being a cute shark made him blush and forget the oddity before him. "But I'm not half shark. I'm- Oh, you're not being literal." He said with a self-concious laugh. Growling playfully, he lowered his head and and paddled swiftly toward her, humming the theme along with her and making chomping noises.

Yuurei giggled, finding the fact that he almost took her comment quite literal entertaining. Yes, Conner was certainly an interesting moonlit and he was fun to be around. She found herself staring at him, admiring him for a moment before his playful growl broke through her momentary lapse. She blinked and brought herself back into reality and watched Conner the shark making his way towards her, chomping at the air and humming the song she had just been humming. She tried to keep herself from laughting and concentrate on swimming away from him but she couldn't. Laughter won out and she floated there, cracking up. "You...are...such...a...clown..." She managed to say through her laughter. "I... can't... breathe..."

Conner smiled happily. He loved the sound of her laugh. But her last statement worried him. Swimming quickly, he gently grabbed her scruff and pulled her to the nearest shallow so that they had something under them and so she wouldn't drown. "Are you okay?" He asked, nudging her neck with his nose.

Trying to catch her breath from her laughing and making sure no more giggles escaped her, Yuurei did not feel herself being dragged back to the shallow water until she felt Conner's nose against her neck. Feeling that familiar fluttering feeling whenever they were close, Yuurei took a deep breath to not only catch her breath but to keep her nerves under control before she answered his question. "Yes, I'm okay. I can breathe now." She stretched her legs beneath her in the water and yelped when she touched the bottom of the lakebed. She looked around, confused and looked back at Conner. "How-how did we get over here?"

Conner frowned slightly. "You said you couldn't breath, so I pulled you over here." He sat back, tilting his head. "I was scared you might drown..."

Yuurei stared up at him for a moment before it dawned on her. "You were trying to save me?" She asked, her tone light and teasing. She was touched by the gesture though she hadn't been in any real danger. A slow smile grew and she pawed at him. "I was perfectly safe you know. It was just an... um..." She bit her lip and wagged her tail in the water while she tried to think of what she was trying to say. "It was just an expression. I have nothing to worry about now though..." She moved closer to him and pressed her nose against his neck. "You'll keep me safe right?"

"An expression?" Conner cocked his head the other way in confusion. She said she couldn't breath, yet she was okay the whole time? He shook his head, still not understanding the whole idea behind 'expressions,' despite his Aunt Nima's attempts while he had been growing up. Feeling his neck gently nuzzled, he sighed and turned to lick her cheek. In danger or no, she was all right now. "Yes, Yuurei, I'll keep you safe." He paused and pulled back a little so that he could see her eyes. "Yuurei? I... I want to keep you safe. Truly. And to do that, another wish must first be granted. I wish to be by your side, so I can always be there always to make sure you stay safe. For the rest of our time and beyond..." Though he'd never felt more confident of anything in his life before, looking into those soulfull mercury eyes had the effect of causing breathlessness.

He sounded confused for a moment and wondered if she what he didn't understand what she had said. She didn't think she had said anything outright confusing had she? She didn't bother mulling over it too much as he promised to keep her safe and that was all that matter in her out right chaotic world. When he pulled back, she stared at him; confused as to why he was drawing away from her and already missing the proximity but she willed herself to pay attention to what he was saying to her. "I...." She glanced away and closed her eyes, willing the words to push past her shyness. Taking a reassuring breath, she turned back to stare him in the eye once more. "I want to be by your side too; in this life and most certainly in the next. It is awful lonely after you die. I just don't understand, what wish must be granted?" She raised her paw and brushed it against his nose. "You do not have to wish for anything. Just say the word and I will stay by your side... until you tire of me of course." It was inevitable. It had to be right? It was what had happened in her family. Her mother grew tired of what she had and, as a result, she ended up being born.

Conner's heart seemed to swell in his chest. Her words were like a soft blanket on a dark night. Surrounded by the world's uncertainty, they were full of comfort and contentment against the angst of life. He looked cross-eyed at his nose before looking in suprise at her. "Tire of you? If such a time ever comes, I shall be condemned to the darkest and coldest part of the world for such stupidity." He shook his head at the silly idea of becoming 'tired' of her and continued. "My wish. Yuurei, I wish to claim you as my mate. To stand by you no matter what. But I won't do so without your consent. You must wish for the same for it to truly matter."

Mate?! Yuurei's thoughts echoed that of the young spirit eavesdropping on her personal conversation. She listened to his words in complete and total awe and remained quiet, unsure of what to really say. She was elated, pleased, anxious and she felt completely and utterly loved by the male standing before her and staring at her but she was also scared. Terror had taken hold of her and she closed her eyes, looking away from him. There were so many positives about all of this but at the same time, her pessimistic mind was throwing at her all of her doubts and insecurities. Could she take this step? She was in love with him and knew she would never love anyone else as strongly and yes she would stay by him but she couldn't bring herself to say what she wanted. She wanted to say she wanted this but fear was stopping her. "I love you Conner...Oh god, I love you so." She said softly. "But I don't know if I can be your mate. I'm afraid, deathly terrified of being hurt and... hurting you. It's in my blood to hurt the one I love. I... couldn't live with my self if I did that."

At first her words were elating, but quickly Conner fell from the clouds in his mind. He tumbled. She sounded like she wanted to say yes, but what was this about fear for him? "Yu-" What could he say? "I.... I guess there is no true way to promise to never hurt each other." He thought of his great-grandparents. He'd heard that before he was born they'd been through a rough time, even seperated for a bit. But they were back together and as in love as ever. Maybe even more so. "Everyone has a chance to hurt another. We- we can't let that fear control us though. I've noticed that there are few relationships that go without a little pain. I've also noticed, that those that did experience pain either fell apart... or became closer." He shook his head. "I don't know about your family, or your blood, but I know mine. There is pain in my family. In the end, most of them let the pain make them stronger. Their bonds strengthened. I-" He looked down at his paws. "I prefer to think of myself as having the merits that they did. That no matter the path, I would be able to find a way to the end alive. But I don't know that for sure." He sighed softly and stepped closer to rest his head against Yuurie's cheek. "You should not be the one I test my will on, but you're the only one I feel worth finding that strength for. I will never be stronger in anything outside of you. And because that strength will be for you, there will be enough to help you too, if you should need it. Whatever you may think will happen, I will fight as long as I can to keep you and have us standing together during and in the end."

Conner's words struck her, chasing away the doubt and fear and dispelling it from her mind and heart. She could still feel its lurking presence but it was kept at bay enough that she could finally open her eyes and lift her head to rub her cheek against his. He was right; they could never truly promise not to hurt one another because things happen that are often out of their control but she knew now, or at least was beginning to understand, she could trust Conner enough that he wouldn't do so intentionally or leave her. His words were enough to tell her how committed he was to this. She was stupid to doubt this, to fear it. So completely and utterly stupid. "I... " She closed her eyes again and took a deep breath to reassure herself before continuing. "I know that I can trust you Conner. I know I can trust you not to hurt me and trust in your strength. I'm an idiot; a blind idiot that couldn't see that before." She continued to rub her face against his, sighing. "I think I'm ready. I think I-I would like to accept your proposal... if you'll still want that."

Letting out a slow breath, his cheek warming with her touch. He could feel her body relaxing, and was encouraged. "You're not an idiot, Yuurei. You're afraid. It's a valid fear, but fear of any kind can inhibit anyone's mind." He caressed her neck with his muzzle in understanding. "I do want you Yuurei, but I want to make sure you're ready. You said you think you'd like it. I know not everything is certain, and some things you're never be certain of until after the fact, but I hope you become more certain of yourself for this. You shouldn't say yes because you think it's right. I see that as me trying to force you into it, and I can't let myself do that to you. You need to know it, or in this case, it might be best just to feel it. Do you feel it Yuurei?"

Yuurei tilted her head slightly at his nuzzling and felt that familiar warmth spread through her. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, allowing that feeling to wash over her before letting herself drift back to reality and the conversation at hand. "I feel it, really I do. I feel like if I let my fears stop this, if I walk away because of that I'm very certain I would be living a half life as a part of myself will always be yours." She admitted softly, turning her head away again. "I think-" Yuurei shook her head, knowing that that was perhaps not the best word choice to use at this time. "I know I'm ready and I know I cannot defeat all of my fears in one night, I have to take a chance. I want this. I want you."
