Atunis Did shel even do the promoting after the competition started? She's gotten something like four times the item worth of anyone else. Not to be ungrateful or anything -_- Bump thirty-nine too be honest...that's a kinda. she does a lot for this guild, not that anyone else doesnt... but i felt she deserved it. anyways. i'll try to get some better prizes for everyone. k?? and i do owe you a mc for your bumps =D

I was seven. Or about to be seven. The hows and whys of it are inconsequential, really; only the what mattered. It was a dark evening, because it gets like that in a Chicago winter. Dark, cold, windy, and nary a flake of snow on the ground. Some ice, to be certain, that had condensed out of the air, stuck, and stayed far past its welcome. Our car was testament to that- some out of state driver had slipped and rearended us.
It was of no matter to me, though. I would have to live my lifetime again to even have to think of driving, and I knew already that I would never drive in Chicago.
The date was December 18, 1997. I was six years and three-hundred and sixty-four days old, and my life as I knew it had been packed into cardboard boxes. My room was bare of all toys, the usual bins of summer clothes no longer stood in my closet, and the only thing to be done was sit next to the fire downstairs with a book and a mug of hot chocolate and wait to get things over with.
It was, all told, set up to be the worst birthday of my life. We were moving on January second, to Houston. A place that, according to my parents, probably hadn't seen snow in fifty years. A place that, according to me, hadn't seen any of my friends, either. I was absolutely miserable.
I fell asleep dreaming of moving vans and boxes.
On the morning of December 19, I woke up, ecstatic simply because it was my birthday. I sobered up pretty quickly when I realized that it also meant two weeks until moving day. The curtains in the house were all closed, and the wind had gotten even louder- they don't call Chicago "the Windy City" for nothing, let me tell you. I ate my favorite breakfast, waffles with peanut butter, woodenly. They tasted like cardboard. My parents had asked me what I wanted for my birthday and the Christmas that would soon follow, but my answers had been impossible for them to give: snow, to stay in Chicago, and a horse. Snow because they couldn't control the weather, though I wished they could; to stay in Chicago because my dad's job was in Houston; and a horse because in cities, horses simply don't exist.
I still hadn't looked out the window.
We were all going to the park- on my request- when my parents pulled out the snow gear and I realized what had happened. That storm that had blown out of the south carried with it moisture, and when that moisture fell, it fell as snow. My beloved snow that I was not to see again for more nearly eleven years, though I didn't know then that it would be so long at the time. I jumped gleefully out into the snow the instant my mom had helped me pull my boots on, running around in circles for a minute before I saw the footprints that weren't mine.
They were too small to belong to my parents, too small to be mine, yet my little brothers were both still inside. They were too big to belong to a deer, though whatever it was had four feet. My first thought was of a dog, a really big dog, and I followed them all the way around our house to a big wall of dark brown fur that smelled a little funny. But that wall? It had a black mane and a black tail and these dark eyes that I fell in love with instantly.
When we left for Texas, Peggy was right with us, in the trailer behind our car. All told, it was probably my best birthday ever.
