"I'm the next Hans Kitsu Anderson!" Name: naggeela Title of Fairytale: Entry:
When the pitter patter of four Kitsu kits feet reached her where she laid on her pillow, their grandmother smiled. She knew what they wanted even before they arrived as it was always the same thing.
“Grandmother, please tell us a story,” one kit piped up.
“Of course.”
“Could we hear a story about fighting?” another asked.
“No, I want a love story.”
“Well the story I had in mind has something like both those topics,” Grandmother said.
“I want one that has to do with nature,” one kit said sheepishly.
“Don’t worry. I think that you will all like this story. It's one I learned from the kitsu of the high mountains while I was traveling the world.”
All the kits giggled in excitement as they climbed to various places in the room to listen to the story. She waited for them to get settled and only when all eyes were on her did she start her tale.
******
Deep within a dark cave, a newly hatched kitsu cried. She was so confused because she hatched alone and in a very dark place. She cried for someone to find her, to be her friend, to comfort her. Unfortunately, her cries only added to the haunted nature of the cave she was in. The cries' echos made it seem like the was haunted by spirits and that feeling was reinforced by the cold fog that creeped outside. As the days turned in to weeks and the weeks turned in to months, she still cried for someone to be her friend. Each tear that fell froze and, as time passed, a frozen cave built up around the poor lonely kitsu.
A gray and light blue fae kitsu walked around the forest, minding his own business, when he heard the crying coming from the haunted cave. Another kitsu near the entrance warned him that there was a bad spirit living with in the cave--a spirit that made the small area around the cave cold. This information didn’t deter him from at looking around the cave, though. He inhaled deeply to gather his courage and walked into the cave. The deeper he walked the colder it became and more ice crystals were on the walls. Ahead he could see an eary glow coming from an opening to a large cavern and the glowing got brighter as he got closer due to the bioluminescent moss growing on the walls.
Once he reached the entrance of the inner cavern, he could see beautiful ice crystals growing straight out of the ground. The bioluminescent moss glowing through the ice gave the cavern a light blue hue all around. A light fog covered the ground and crawled up the sides of the walls. He couldn’t keep his eyes in one place for too long because there was so much to look at. How could something like this could form when outside the cavern was a tropical jungle? he wondered. After all, he had only seen these type of caves high in the mountains were snow really never left.
Suddenly, it popped into his mind that the howling he had heard at the entrance of the cave had really been someone crying. He looked around the cave to locate what his ears were hearing and finally found something near the middle of the cave that wasn't ice crystals. He turned toward his discovery and walked toward it, noticing that it got colder the closer he got. Soon he realized it was just a little crying kitsu kit, not the horrid monster tales about the cave said lived here. Sitting down near the little kit, he reached a paw out to touch her and discovered that she was the source of the cold, quite befitting her fur that looked like living glacier ice which had countless blues blended together with a fine veining of white. Her most striking feature, though, was her little light blue translucent wings made of the most delicate ice.
At the fae's touch she stopped crying and turned to look at him with deep blue-green eyes. She cocked her head to look him over and then reached her own paw out to touch him to make sure that she wasn’t seeing things. Her eyes got big with excitment and she sat up when she realized he was actually there.
“Where is your family, little one?” he asked.
“I don’t have one. I hatched here alone.”
“So no one knows you live here?”
She nodded and then started to cry as she remembered how much she hated being alone. Why had no one ever come to save her before the fae?
“It's ok,” he bravely suffered her very cold fur to hug her tight.
“Will you be my friend?” she asked between the sobs.
“Yes, I will be. I’m Arz. What is your name?”
“I don’t have one,”
He thought for a second as he looked around at the ice trying to come up with a good name for the little kit. “Your name now is Kori,” he said as he pointed to her.
“Kori…I like that. Thank you,”
“You’re welcome,” he said with a slightly strange smile on his face. He had plans for her.
Years passed and Kori grew into a fine kitsu that looked like living ice. After she left the cave, she learned that she was the one that had made all those ice crystals and with the help of Arz her control over her power of making things cold grew. Kori was so thankful to for Arz saving her, teaching all that he knew, and being her friend that she grew blind to what Arz really wanted from her.
“So how many years has it been since we became friends?”
“I think it has been about three, Arz,” she answered.
He smiled and nodded at her answer, drawing from behind his back a silver pendent with a red gem in the center. “An anniversary present for a special kitsu I found crying,” he said as she bent down for him to put the necklace around her neck. He couldn't help but smile wickedly as the pendant dropped into place around his neck. Finally, all his plans would be fullfilled.
“Thank you!” she said as she gave him a hug and gave the pendent a good look over. “I will never take it off, as I owe you a lot.”
“That is very nice of you, but I do have something that you can do for me.”
“Anything for you,”
“I want you to make some of the land around here into a winter wonderland as I have some friends that have never experienced snow and ice."
“I can do that, but aren't there others living in the lands around your home?”
“No there are not and don’t worry, the wild life will be ok. Also once you are done I want you to come back here as fast as you can,” he said, soothing her fears.
“I can do that,” she said with a smile, tails wagging behind her, happy to finally be able to repay her friend.
Over the course of the year she froze a good 100 mile radius around Arz’s home, but unknown to Kori, there had been kitsu living in the land that she had frozen because he had never taught her that kitsu might live underground or in the dense forest. Arz promised all the dislodged kitsu everything they needed to live provided they spread rumors that Kori was a demon wreaking havoc on the land. Once they fulfilled their side of the bargain, though, those kitsu were secretly taken by nightmares under Arz's control and made slaves to Arz's mad wish to rule the world. Kori, his perfect slave, had just given him all he needed to solve his greatest problem--making the kitsu on his land his slaves.
When she at last finished freezing the land Kori looked around, pleased by her handy work. She was a little troubled, however. Why had Arz asked this? Before she could come to an answer, though, a crackling of the frozen ground behind her made Kori turn around to find other Kitsu looking at her. Some looked shocked and none looked happy to see her. She was stunned to see all these kitsu as she was told others didn’t live in these lands. After a few moments, a shivering teen kitsu walked out of the crowd and over to Kori.
“Why have you done this?”
“I didn’t know. My friend asked me to do this.”
“Did you know that there were others living around here?”
“I was told that all that lived here were just the wild animals,”
“We are not wild animals and your freezing the land has made it hard to live in. Your so-called friend has even made slaves of us with his army of nightmares!”
“I didn’t know. If I had known I would have never done this!”
“How do we know that this isn’t just an act?”
“It's not! Arz is the one that saved me when I hatched alone. He taught me all he knew and became my good friend.”
“But did you ever think to go out into the world learning things for yourself?”
“I always thought of it, but I feared that Arz wouldn’t like me anymore if I left. I also didn’t have control over my powers back then.”
"You should have come out. We like meeting new kitsu. We would have been your friend even if you didn’t have your powers under control."
“I was afraid that I would never find any one that would like me.”
“It normal to be afraid, but how would you know if you never tried?”
“W-what have I done?” She cried out and as she did, she saw that her beautiful crystal clear blue wings were being corrupted with black ice that engulfed the bottoms. Sniffing back tears, she suddenly knew what she had to do. Even though she didn't notice, once she made the decision, the stone in her beloved pendant broke, breaking the spell that Arz had had on her for so long.
“I’m going to right what I have done wrong!” she stated as she took wing back to Arz’s home. She headed straight for the place Arz had told her to never go. Once there, she found those kitsu that had been enslaved working with a nightmare keeping watch over them. With all her anger she targeted the nightmare and froze him solid.
“I’m sorry for what I have done to all of you. I should have looked before I leaped. But I do intend to make right,” she stated and the kitsu she had freed cheered.
“I thought that you might do something like this once you learned the truth,” a voice said from behind the nightmare.
“Arz! Why?"
“I wanted to rule the world.”
“How did you know what I would do?”
“From the pendant you are wearing. I spelled it for you to obey every order I gave you, but you seem to have broken it. It doesn’t matter, though, you have already done what I wanted.”
“I’m going to correct this!”
“I think not,” Arz smirked as nightmares started to come into the room.
Kori panicked as she saw the nightmares coming and the slaves huddling in fear behind her.
“This is not right, Arz.” She flew off the ground and headed straight for him.
Arz braced for the impact, but he didn’t know that Kori was condensing her power into her wings. Right before she was going to body slam Arz, she brought her wings around and slapped him with them. The impact shattered all of the dark ice off only leavening the unspoiled parts of her wings intact. Arz, surprised at what she had done, was frozen solid.
“Come on everyone. Let's get out of here before he gets out and the nightmares get to us!”
Kori quickly showed the kitsu back to the group she had met earlier. She knew they couldn't stay there long, though, because Arz would be after them. The only safe place she could think of were the mountains.
“So are the mountains really a safe place?” a kitsu asked.
“Yes they are as there are lots of places to hide and I will protect you all.”
“Then let's go. There's nothing for us here anymore.”
Kori could hear the nightmares getting closer and closer so she encouraged the kitsu to hurry, warning them that they would become slaves again if they didn't. Arz and his nightmares wouldn't give up though and stayed right on their heels.
“How much longer must we run? I’m so tired.”
Kori had to come up with a plan, as they couldn’t run forever. Even she was getting tried.
“We just have to get into the pass and I will do the rest.” She said as she came up with a plan to use the last of her strength to seal the pass with ice.
The kitsu nodded and soon they were all safely up beyond the pass. Kori stood at the pass and made her powers ready for use. Just as she was going to freeze the pass she saw Arz coming through it. She smiled as she released her power in one stroke righting her wrongs and protecting the kitsu and the new would they would be living in.
***********
“So what did we learn today grandkits?” Grandmother asked.
“Not to make those that can create ice mad?”
“Always learn all you can from everyone around you?”
“That is right." Grandmother nodded. "Never limit yourself to one friend. Have many friends so you can learn a lot from them all.”
“So what happen to Kori after she sealed the pass?”
"Those she saved had a good life, but no one knows what happened to her because she never did return to them. When you go to Ice River Pass, though, they say if you listen, you might be able to hear her crying over what she has done and for the friends she still longs to have.”

"I'm the next Hans Kitsu Anderson!" Name: saedusk Title of Fairytale: The Stone Kitsusagi Entry:
Deep within the forest, was a small gathering of Kitsusagi, a tribe of sorts. Faithful in nature, the group lived a simple life in servitude to a multitude of gods and goddesses. Upon birth, the mere feel of an egg would often signify which deity had claimed the unhatched child inside. Mothers would smile down at their clutch, praising each and every one for finding favor with one of the high ones. There was rarely a time when this ritual was untrue.
And so, born within that small, faithful tribe was a boy. In no way different than most, he'd been claimed upon delivery, the outer shell of his own egg feeling rougher than his siblings. In a way, the unhatched kit had given off a feel of strength. The elders had seen great promise in him. That is, until he was born and began to grow.
Very unwilling, the male, born under the sign of stone, went about his daily life however he saw fit. If that included no work, that was how he went about it. Even when his mother scolded him and pushed him to work at the harvest with the other boys, he refused, turning his nose up and padding away. During the day, it was extremely common to see him sleeping at the base of a large line of boulders at the outskirts of the clearing.
"Batujiwe, get up will you!" His mother's voice reached his ears in the same scolding tone as it had every day since he could remember. Bright yellow eyes creaked open, doing their best to bring her form into focus through the intrusive sunlight of midday. "There now. It's time to get to work." This really had become a ritual, looking to the rocks to find him and bidding him to do something useful, something for the good of the tribe.
Today, however, seemed also no different than usual. Instead of gracing her with a response, he merely rolled over and shut his eyes again, all three tails curling like a blanket around his form. Huffing, the older female gave a stern stare at his back, despite the fact that she knew it would do no good. As sad as it was, as much as the other women of the tribe scolded her in return, she'd never been very good at being strict. She'd given up on converting Batujiwe a long time ago. Turning tail, his mother gave one last look to his sleeping form before beginning the trek back to the group.
Yet, no matter how similar to all the other days this seemed, something had indeed changed. From the surface of the rocks around him, the God of Stone watched. The great deity had become very weary of this boy's antics. What an ungrateful one he was. Well, there were ways of straightening out such Kitsu. Batujiwe would either learn his place or lose it. Now was the time to see.
Layers of the stone began to move, sliding like water down towards the sleeping male. The entirety of his skin became coated with the liquid, which hardened very quickly. The more sensitive areas of skin let go of his fur, leaving the once normal looking male spotted with patches golden fur contrasting against gray, cracked looking stone. A great itching sensation overcame him and his eyes snapped open. As soon as he attempted to lift his head from his paws, he realized something was terribly wrong.
Batujiwe's entire body felt heavy and uncomfortable. It took a great, straining effort to even move his form at all. Whining, the male rose, feeling immediately tired. But he had to figure out what was wrong! The elders might know why he was feeling this way, what had happened to him. With each difficult step, he began to notice the unusual, scaly gray look of the skin on his forepaws.
On the trip, the male fell more than his fair share of times, shaking the earth with his unusual weight. Despite the strength of his form, he still felt a jolting pain run through him. The pain was so great that he didn't stop to think of the trouble he was causing elsewhere.
Back at the center of the clearing, the trembles of Batujiwe's trek were becoming evident. The earth shook all around the confused Kitsu. An earthquake was never something they had experienced before. Extremely worried, the now stone-male's mother ran swiftly away from the group. She had to find her son before something happened! Her other children were safe with their father for now.
Padding along the usual path, she paid no heed to the wild swaying of the trees at her side. Not until a final, great jolt of the earth snapped one at the middle. The shadow of the large tree covered her in its decent. Staring wide-eyed and unmoving, stuck by fear, she squeezed her eyes shut.
"Mom!"
Her eyes shot open again, seeing the familiar flash of gold fur as Batujiwe, still struggling against his weight, made his way towards her. Time seemed to speed by without warning and yet, the crushing weight she had expected to feel was replaced with a gust of air instead. Protecting his mother without thought, the male had caught the large tree on his back. All around the place of impact, the stone skin cracked further, some of it dropping off in pieces to the dirt. With a great heave, he moved the tree aside, collapsing when he was sure they were finally safe.
"Batujiwe, are you alright!" His mother called, nuzzling at his neck. The strangeness of the moment seemed to take a back seat to the worry she felt now. Despite a feeling of sickness, the male moved to lift his head to her. Surprisingly, his body felt normal now. He could move undaunted. Yet, the stone skin he had received during his trial hadn't melted away.
The God of Stone had plans for this one. No, nothing great or spectacular. Normal plans. He wanted this chosen son to have a good life, but not a lazy one, a life of simple work and simple faith like the rest. The stone skin would remain as a reminder. If Batujiwe hadn't learned his lesson from this little mishap, the weight would surely return to burden his life once again. This was his second chance.

"I'm the next Hans Kitsu Anderson!" Name: Melodine Cantus Title of Fairytale: The Shapeshifter Entry:
Once upon a time, there was a peaceful village that lived near a forest. The forest was dark and foreboding; and the adults constantly warned young kits not to venture near there, as it was unsafe. They told them about a monster that lived in its depths, one that would gobble them up if they defied their parents.
Of course, it wasn’t long till some young kits suspected that this was all a hoax to frighten them and prevent them from wandering off. Some just shrugged it off and merely continued playing with their playmates, though some were much more curious and much more daring to question this.
“Really,” said a boy named Tavery. “I don’t get why they tell us such tall tales! It’s just a forest, what is there to be afraid of?”
Tavery, the brave (and foolish) one he was, gathered up a group of his friends and coaxed them to follow him into the forest to go on an adventure.
“An adventure, you say?” Robyn, a female kit who had overheard their conversation piped up. “Can I come?”
Tavery looked at her in disdain. “You’re just a girl; you’ll hinder our way! Come on, boys, let’s go!” With this, they turned, their tails in the air and headed towards the forest.
“Well, so be it!” Robyn called after them cheerfully. “I’ll have you know boys need as much protection as girls in there!”
Tavery ignored her words. “Come on, fellows! Let’s show them there’s nothing to be afraid of!”
“Do you re...really think its okay, Tavery?” A wavering voice piped up. This was one of Tavery’s timid friends that he had coerced along, claiming that he was too ‘chicken’ to go in. And of course, boyish pride kicked in and he had agreed. “It’s...kinda dark in here.”
“It’s dark at night.” Tavery retorted. “And I don’t see your knees quaking when it is.”
“See,” Tavery said as they continued walking, “there’s nothing here. Just a peaceful, nice forest.”
“Uh...Tavery?” Another spoke up. “Timmy’s...gone...”
“What?” The kit spun around and was faced with only two of his comrades. “He must have been a scaredy cat and ran back home.” He declared, pushing the slight feeling of dread away. “Come on! We can’t stop now!” In his mind, he saw Robyn and the others laughing at them for having run out of the forest, asking them where their brave facade had went. No! He thought stubbornly. That would not happen.
One by one, however, as they ventured further, his partners disappeared and Tavery was now starting to get rather nervous, trying to convince himself that he would be a hero after proving that no monsters lay in the shadowy depths of the forest.
“Tavery!” A voice suddenly burst out behind him and he jumped, shaking madly. Was there...really a monster? As he turned around slowly, he was greeted by giggly laughter, and frowned to see that it was Robyn.
“What are you doing here?” He asked exasperatedly. “It’s dangerous for a girl...”
“Oh?” She asked, her eyes narrowing. “Who was the one who leapt 10 feet in the air...”
“Alright alright!” He spluttered. “Just...stay...quiet.”
She nodded and they continued on their journey. Deep down, Tavery was rather glad she had come along; it wasn’t nice being alone. Not at all. Just as this thought crossed his mind, a shriek pierced through the air and he spun around, to find Robyn missing! Now, Tavery was afraid. Very afraid.
“What’s the matter?” A growl sounded and a dark Nightmare leapt out and landed on the path in front of him. “Missing your friends, young one?”
“Oh, oh no, I, um, it’s getting late, I should really go, I...”
“How many times!” The large Kitsusagi bellowed. “Have I told them that I don’t like eating the young ones! Too little meat! Go now, before I change my mind!”
“Ye---yes sir!” Tavery ran, not caring if anyone would mock at him when he got back.
The Kitsusagi watched him as he left, a smile growing on its maw as its body shrunk, into the guise of Robyn, the young female kit. “Now really.” Robyn smirked. “I hope that’ll teach him a lesson. And warn the others not to disturb my peace.”
“...And that’s why, you should always listen to what your elders tell you. AND! Don’t trust girls.” Xanul nodded his head frantically to reiterate his point.
