That was also a first for Jessica. It was strange but nice to her. She nodded nonetheless and glanced down at her menu, not really sure what she wanted. "..Um...this may sound strange...but I've never eaten here before... I've sat at the bar many times, tho never came in here before..."She looked about her mesmerized by the soft light, her eyes finally resting on Alex.
"So I guess I'm saying i have no clue what to order." She gave him a meek little look from over her menu before biting her lip, trying to make a decision.

"Well stay away from the steak, for one thing. You never know how it's going to turn out with the cooks back there. I'd go for the... roasted chicken."
Alex sat up in his seat more so he could have a peek at her face, which was mostly hidden by the menu. Once their eyes met, he gave her a goofy smile and a wiggle of the eyebrows, not knowing what else to do now that they actually had time to talk and be alone.
"So, what else do you do besides go clubbing and read?" he asked, hoping she'd be up for some kind of conversation. Though, really, what girl didn't ever talk?

She laughed, shaking her head as she thoughts. "Hm...Nope thats pretty much it." She winked. "What do you do besides wait on snooty coffee deprived customers and hitting on the ones that stay late?" She retorted, setting her menu down a moment, her eyes on the verge of laughter but kept straight so she could hold the smirk.
She loved how he made her want to laugh. She usually kept to herself when it came to laughing or crying ecspecially, but it just came so easy with him around...

"Oh, I daydream in the back room about being a famous historical writer, getting riled up at every mention of ancient artifacts and sing show tunes when I think no one can hear."
Which he laughed at, if only because it was true. He did want to become a very well-known writer who could relate history in an interesting, intriguing way that brought the reader right into the time period with him. Artifacts were things he loved to examine, though not excavate, and he did indeed like a catchy song or two. He was really just a normal guy with dreams of something better.
"The ones who stay late are usually going through their caffeine crash. You wanna stay away from them, believe me."

Jess cocked an eyebrow.She hadn't expected that. The amused smile on her face gave that away. "Alright... Well..." She seemed to think. "I'm rather boring really... I love taking walks, ecspecially at night which is dangerous and near impossible so I Rarely do it... But just walking in general i enjoy. I walk pretty much everywhere." She smiled, looking down at the table.
"Um...and in my spare time..when I'm not clubbing or reading or in class, or at the cafe as of late," She glanced up to give him a soft flirty smile. "I will find myself also enjoying singing, rather off key i believe, and dancing like a fool when I have the house to myself..." She smiled genuinely, feeling rather lightheaded and happy, telling these minor details that made her her.
This whole evening was turning into a night of firsts for her.
She had not really wanted to open up to him at first, just letting him little details here and there. But now she was starting to see he was really harmless, amazing really. She wouldn't be so tense with him now, she resolved. She'd try to be as open to him if he did the same for her.

"Looks like we're both hidden talent, eh?" It made him smile, too, how they'd both be goofs when no one was around. Now, if he could get her to be like that when he was around, maybe they'd get somewhere.
"Doesn't mean you're boring, though. I'm really not that exciting, either. But then again, what do you find exciting about people?"
He certainly wasn't rich, and wasn't well-known on the planet for anything, really. He was just a student.

She smiled and laughed a little, looking away with a little shrug. "Oh...I dunno.." She sighed thinking on it. "I suppose I love the little quirks that make them different...I like to observe people in their natural habitats...and occasionally throw a wrench into their social norms to see how they react..." Jess had taken Sociology in school and adored it. Though she couldn't see much of a future behind it, it was still a small passion of hers.
"For instance...what you wear can have a great effect on how people view you." She smiled a bit ,thinking to her outfit on hr birthday. "I ecspecially love testing ti on my parents... I use it only on occasion to sort of... see where they are emotionally..." She let that thought trail off, but then re diverted the conversation so she wouldn't get too deep.
"Though thinking about the little quirks... I think I know mine pretty well. I'm still in the process of learning yours however... I do find the fact that you love focusing on past events fascinating... If not simply because I tend to be the complete opposite..." She smiled a bit, a hint of slyness thrown into the mixture. She felt that someone who dug too deeply into the past had to have some reason for it. And every individuals reason was different...she couldn't wait to find out Alex's.
"See, I like to stay focused on the present and future... I love predicting peoples actions by studying how they act and use that to determine what they're capable of... Kind of like... bracing myself for the future... in a way..." She shrugged though smiled when the waiter stopped by to being them water to start off with.
"Though its difficult when the past holds me back..." She murmured with a sigh to herself as she took a sip before looking up to Alex. "You ready to order? I'll just have whatever you recommend." She smiled innocently, glancing back down at the menu.

He found that incredibly fascinating. Where she enjoyed predicting and testing people out, he enjoyed digging around to what happened.
"I'm a cause and effect man, myself," he said, leaning in slightly now that his attention was fully ensnared.
"Only for me, it's the past that provides the information. I know what happened then, I know in most cases the exact course of events that led up to that particular effect. So, taking what I know about what has been, I try and prevent anything negative in what will be. It can be as simple as oh, I had way to much to drink that one night. The next night, I won't drink that much, and everything will be fine."
His way of thinking more often than not provided more solid ways of knowing what would happen, unlike Jess' way of throwing a curveball and waiting to see the results.
For ordering, he asked for a plate of chips and avocado spinach dip to start off with. Dinner wouldn't be had just yet for him.
"I want you to order whatever it is you want," he said to Jess. "No leaving it up to me."

She smirked a bit. "Well thats boring..." She bit her lip and leaned forward a bit as well, though requested a simple salad to start her off so the waiter would give them privacy, as well as giver her more time to order.
"I mean, sure, you're almost always right then.... don't you get tired of that?" She asked, rather dryly, smiling as she took a sip of her water.
"To me..the past is too...binding. What's done is done.What's now is now, and tomorrow is tomorrow..." She shrugged a bit, not meaning to speak negatively about what he was so passionate about, but simply giving her thoughts on it.
"I guess I'm just saying...is it always best to judge things...based on the past?" She asked, looking up at him inquisitively.

"Hmm... no." He seemed to contradict himself right then and there, and all with a grin.
"You can't predict everything. There's always different people involved, with their own different pasts that made them the person they are in that one moment. But it's just fascinating when you have this one time, this one moment that will never be the same ever again. The past is something to learn from and know, so you can understand your present. And the future... is just something you have to try and make yourself. Along with the present. I feel like I'm chasing my tail in circles here."
Alex looked up to Jess and saw those big blue eyes again. Those eyes, that face, would never be as beautiful as it was right then and there, but could be a whole different kind of beautiful the next day, and the next. Her mind was a product of whatever horrors she had seen in her past, but that smile had been formed in that time gone by, too.
So what had happened?

She raised an intrigued eyebrow once more. "Well it seems you and I aren't so opposite after all..." She smiled, with a hint of mystery and a whole lot of respect as their appetizers were brought to them.
As his purple eyes studied her though, she felt her cheeks pinken so took a bite of salad with an approving nod. "I must say, You've pricked my interest Alex...something even if easily done, not admitable.. so congratulations on that..." She looked down at her salad shyly though not vulnerable...
Really she was just letting him know she was beginning to trust him. Something she didnt do too easily but with Alex... he was just so... open. So simply...there. There didnt seem to be any dark presence about him, or any hang up that she should be wary of... though despite how perfect he seemed and how comfortable she was... it was all the more reason for her to stay on her toes with him.

"Oh, I think we have a lot in common." Alex flashed a smile. He wanted to hold her hand, too, but knew with that shy smile came a level of mistrust. The elevator was fine for that sort of thing, since she could have the freedom to walk away, but in this booth, in the restaurant that was their destination, she might feel trapped.
And then Alex thought that he thought too much and should just shut up already.
"So now that you think I'm interesting, what do you think of the food? Hopefully this isn't a complete bust so far, yeah?"
Alex ate a chip filled with the dip he had ordered, and looked positively content as he chewed. It was his favorite, and would put some meat on his bones with its fattening properties.
He offered some to Jess, just in case she wanted a try.

She gladly took a chip, and gave a surprising smile as she nomed away on it, laughing a bit. "Thats really good.." She nodded, stealing just one more chip, and offering him some of her salad.
"But yes in general... I have to say I'm not disappointed..." Her eyes seemed deeper a moment as she just looked at him, finding herself biting her lip jsut a bit, showing she meant more than just the food.
"You do have a way with women. I'm sure you're girlfriend absolutely hates letting you take a female friend out like this..." She was still offering him some salad but took a bite in the mean some, as if trying to make her hint a bit more subtle.

His eyebrows raised so high that they disappeared behind the small fringe of his loose hair. It was getting rather unruly, but gave him that modern, scruffy look people seemed to be going for those days. Goodness knows he wasn't trying, though.
"I don't... have a girlfriend," he mumbled before taking a long sip of his drink, just to buy himself some time for thought. What had made her think that he would? And did that mean she didn't see this as a date?
"I uh... I work a few different jobs, and I'm not sure who would want to put up with me almost never being at my apartment. I really have to make time for seeing people, so feel special." It was her own little quip being thrown back at her with a little smile.
But she should feel special, he thought, because she just is.

She glanced up at him, smiling slightly. She had figured as much with the way he was acting, but Jess had always second guessed herself, ecspecially when it came to men.
She didnt want to just assume this was a date... ecspecially since he had first made it sound like a dinner between friends... but how naive could she be? He held her hand in the elevator. ... which was nice thinking back on it...
But just hearing him say that was a bit of a reaffirmation... She eased herself a bit.
"Oh I do..." She smiled warmly at him. "Extremely..." she blushed ever so slightly, biting her lip as she deterred her eyes again. "Though no offense, you're social life must really, really suck, if you made time just for me..." She gave him a funny little smile as she adjusted herself in the booth.
