Lances were the primary weapon of choice for most knights and soldiers, however, all carried a back up weapon, which was usually a sword.

Note the word knight meaning it was a European based statement

The reasons swords saw so much use back in the day for melee range is because they were faster than spears, and a LOT harder to break than the wooden shafts. Axes were too slow when you were surrounded. And daggers were best for assassinations, not brawls.

I myself am partial to swords, mostly because it is the most versatile weapon for close range. But I also think that any proper warrior should know how to use a bow and arrow effectively. Its just common sense that if you can take out an opponent from afar, why the heck would you risk fighting him man to man. (pardon the uninentional chauvinism)

._. Woman to man here...

Yeah, chauvinism means being a male supremacist, which I am not. It was just a lot easier to phrase that way.

Gandalf had a backup weapon, which happened to be a sword. And LOTR is a fantasy. Nothing is all that realistic in a fantasy, since weapons never break, and main characters never die, except to prove some point in the grand scheme of things. In reality, it is the luckiest who survives a fight. Even the most skilled can take a lance in the back when they are not expecting it.

But impalement by guitar? Man, that would REEEEally suck, if you actually fell hard enough to get impaled. most likely broken ribs for sure, which would almost be more embarrassing than actually dying from it.

LOTR... is... a fantasy...? It can't be...

To add on to my own post, knights were trained in all sorts of weapons. Bows, spears/lances, swords, and axes.

Basic soldiers were armed with a shield, a lance, and a short sword.

Yeah, I knew about the knight thing... they couldn't themselves be hampered if they didn't have their weapon of choice available, so they trained in multiple weapons. They typically had one weapon they were best at, though.

@ Directvantage: (I always forget to check yours sigs..forgive my failure!) I know what it means. I was simply kidding. ;3
It would suck, though. Though LIVING through it..I guess that would suck more because you have to live WITH it.

I still believe zweihanders are awesome. (assuming you have the strength to wield one) If I had to choose a weapon though it definitely wouldn't be a zweihander though sweatdrop

I'd have to go rapier or something else light since I lose arm wrestling contests with people of a gender known for having poor upper body strength.

The Wookies? idea

(I lose to just about anybody in arm-wresting contests too, unless I start cheating with both arms. sweatdrop I'm safer with bow and arrow. Maybe magic, if I could use it?)

I would use a spiked shield and a lance with a long sword as backup. However, I'd use the shield with my right arm and the lance with my left, even though I'm right handed.

Why? So the lance wouldn't be steady?

Maybe to defend more readily.

(I lose just about every arm-wrestling contest I'm in, too. XD)

It's much easier to hold a shield steadily than a lance. Especially if you kneel and rest it on the ground.

(I NEVER win arm wresteling matches, and I probrably never will)

Yeah, Now that I think about it I'd probably go with bow or magic if possible as well >_>

I'd suck at defending. I'd be better off trying to dodge.
