Niyana handed the sprig up to her son, "Now remember take a small bite of just one of the leaves." She smiled. Her son was so bold and willing to learn. She was going to have to try hard not to play favorites or baby him too much.
"It is used often in more fancy cooking or to make the eater feel like they are eating in a classy place. But a little goes a long way and cooking brings out the flavor and moves it all the way threw meats."

Ruque took the sprig and tore off a tiny bit of one leaf, just enough that he would be able to taste it but small enough that he probably wouldn't even feel it on his tongue. As his mother explained about it, he nodded and put it in his mouth.
"Whoa," he giggled. "You're right, it is strong! But it's yummy."
He swallowed it down, but the taste stayed in his mouth.
"Maybe a bit too strong for rabbit?" he suggested. "Or if we just use a little bit of it maybe ..."

"If we use just a small amount and mix it with an orange or other fruit glaze it is perfect for rabbit and pork too." She smiled. "So what fruit do you think will go with our fruit salad and the rabbit but will not be the same as the salad?"
She turned to head back into the main room after grabbing another herb to discuss with her son when they were mixing the glaze for the rabbit.

Ruque ran his tongue over his teeth, trying to get rid of the taste in his mouth, thinking about the answer to that question.
"Maybe .... lemons?" he suggested. "They're kind of good ... and we didn't put that in the salad ..."
He looked at the herb in her hand and wondered what it was.

Niyana laughed watching her son, "See I told you it was very strong stuff." she smiled and nods, "Oh lemons would be great...it would really brighten up the flavor of the rabbit." she lowered Ruque to the table and put too large lemons next to him, "Alright rolls these around to get the juices flowing." She smiled at him and I will get the pan for the rabbits and then we can talk about this herb I brought too.

Ruque giggled. "Okay!" he agreed cheerfully, taking a lemon in each hand and rolling them around on the table. "Like this? --whoa!"
He scrambled after one of them that had gotten away from him, then grinned sheepishly up at Niyana. "Sorry."

Niyana bursted out into a warm laugh, "Well maybe you should just roll one at a time dear." she set the pan down on the table and watched him. Niyana took the other lemon and started to roll it. "Then once they are all rolled and juicy we cut them and put them into the pan with the rosemary and our second herb."

Ruque giggled, and his blush faded away. "Okay!" he said brightly, letting go of one of the lemons and rolling the other one around on the table.
"And what's the second herb?" he asked, switching over to the other lemon. "Does it go good with rosemary and lemon?"

Niyana nods, "This is an herb that goes well with most things, it is called thyme. It doesn't over power any of the other herbs or flavors but it gives that little something that is missing and it heightens the flavors. This has to be my favorite of the herbs." she laughed softly and broke off a bit for Ruque to smell and taste if he liked too.

Ruque took the herb from Niyana and put it to his nose, inhaling its scent warily. He blinked. It ... smelled but not strongly ...
He put it into his mouth to taste it. Indeed, after the overpowering taste of the rosemary that he was still trying to get out of his mouth, it was quite faint ... very subtle ... yet ...
"They taste good together," he said softly, smiling at Niyana. "I still taste the rosemary ... but ... they're good ..."
He beamed up at her.

Niyana nods, "Don't they, it even draws the rosemary to a level that is fine tasting. It is a wonderful little herb I use in almost everything." She smiled and cuts her lemon squeezing it into the pan.
"Alright now it is your lemon's turn. Sometimes you want to be careful just to get the juice of the lemon and not any of the inside or pulp so it helps to always squeeze your lemons with the cut part facing up." She smiled, "in this recipe it doesn't matter if you get pulp or not but you always want to make sure not to get the lemon seeds into the sauce or food."

Ruque nodded and held up his lemon to Niyana. "Can you help me cut it?" he asked. "The knife is as big as me, I don't think I can pick it up ..."
Not to mention, the lemon was half his height and he was going to have a bugger of a time squeezing it.
"Maybe I should just add the herbs?" he suggested.

Niyana nods, "Alright you cut the herbs...with herbs unless you need them fine it is best to tear them. this brings out their flavor more. Because it does not crush the herbs and it exposes more opening to them."
She took the lemon from her son, cut it and squeeze in the juices. "And your father should be coming in with those rabbits soon enough."

Ruque handed the lemon up to Niyana and smiled with relief.
"I'll tear the herbs," he agreed, pulling the herbs towards himself and beginning to tear them up as small as he could - which was quite small, considering the size of his fingers.
Sure enough, only a few short moments later, Celebor came back in, this time carrying slices of rabbit meat and with its pelt over one arm.
"Ready for you," he smiled, setting the meat onto the table. "I'm going to clean the pelt before it stains, maybe we can make something for Ruque out of it, something to commemorate his first cooking experience."
He grinned and winked at his son, smiling proudly.
Ruque blinked up at Celebor. "Something for me?" he repeated in surprise. "What?"

Niyana nods, "Yup tear it up nice and good but leave the rosemary in big chunks that way you can get a sharp burst or you can pick it off easier and you don't have to worry about eating the sticks."
Turning she smiled at Celebor, "Oh that is a wonderful idea my lord!" She smiled and started trying to figure out what they could make for thier son. They could make him a medical bag one small one and one for when he was older or an herb pouch..
"Of course for you Ruque you have been working hard you deserve something nice. Oh but first can you tell your dad about Rosemary?"
