A few hours later, Doris lay awake, staring at the ceiling. She had too much on her mind to try to get much sleep. Did they dispose of those guys? She thought, her imagination wandered, images of Cops raiding the Mayfair came to her mind, everyone getting arrested, including her.

Tears came to her eyes at the thought, she knew what she was getting into, she just thought the Utopia feeling would last a few more months. The tears started streaming down her face, she sat up and got out of bed. She found her purse and dug out the cigarettes and matches. She walked out to her tiny balcony, and lit up. Her fingers were shaking, as she took a long drag.

She looked over at the bay, and Coronado Island, lights flickering, even this late at night. If ever anything were to happen, I'd go there, she thought, getting less shaky as she took another drag. I wonder how they're doing, she thought randomly as she looked at the twinkling stars over the bay.

Joe woke up, the sun on the horizon. He smiled a little, the small pleasure of a new day with fresh beginnings made him happy. When he drank enough he would forget everything he had done, and he would be happy to simply be alive. Now he was still happy for the new day, but necessity led him to a great many horrible acts.

I suppose it's time to wake up. He hit his alarm before it could ring and went to shower and get dressed. After changing, he looked into the mirror, "Lady Killer," he spoke softly, laughing a little after. He didn't need the dames like most men.

He looked at his watch as he walked down the sidewalk. "Aw crap. I'm about to be late for the shipment." He ran back to get into his car, though he hated to drive, and took off.

Doris opened her eyes, the sun was coming in through her window; she sat up, stretched and yawned. She got out of bed and changed and walked downstairs for breakfast. Her mother and father were already talking.

"Yeah, I invited Joe over for some supper," her father told her mother. She just nodded her head while she put food on the plates. She sat down at the table, her father turned to her. "There's my little girl!" He got up and hugged her.

Her mother put food on her plate, "Morning," she said. They never talked about what they argued about, it just wasn't their way. The past is the past, let it not ruin a new day. They all sat down and started eating their breakfast.

After breakfast Doris walked down to the Gaslamp Quarter for some early shopping. She walked down Fifth and reached Broadway, she gazed in shop windows and petted the horses who were pulling carriages. She bought a new dress for supper tonight, her mother says she has to look nice when guests come over.

She picked out a pearl pink flapper dress, a white boa, and some new pink shoes to match her dress. She also bought the matching hat, even though she wouldn't be able to wear it at supper, she could wear it at the Mayfair.

"Tyler, get those crates moving a little faster," Joe kicked one of his boys in the butt to make him get a move on. There were three truck loads, and Joe hated being anywhere for too long, in fear the coppers would catch on. "We don't want the pigs sniffing round our trench. They get thirsty just like the rest of us." The boys laughed at the exclamation. The joke was the cops didn't destroy all the liquor, but saved about a quarter of it to drink a little later.

"You tell 'em, Joe. We all knows they gots lounges in them basements!"

"Right you are, Kim. By the way, Kim, how's that legality issue about you staying here going?" Joe picked up a crate and started hauling.

Kim was new to the states, and still hadn't gotten his passport. "What issue? If they don't catch me, there's no issue." He winked at Joe, and Joe simply laughed.

"Hey Joe. You gots a call up here."

Joe went up to answer the phone, "You're what? I suppose. Nah, I shouldn't be busy tonight, boss. Yeah, seven sounds perfect. What am I doing now? Oh, I'm...I'm importing some soda." Joe laughed, "Yeah, I thought you would get a kick out of that you old hound. I miss those days. Too bad someone got too old. Some day, some day, but until then I'm a busy little b*****d. Anyway, I have to ditch. I'll see you tonight."

Joe went back to work, loading the crates and sending them off without a hitch. He rode shotgun in one truck heading to the Mayfair. When he arrived, they parked in the back and started unloading.

Doris took a horse-drawn carriage up the hill to her house. She tipped the driver and gathered her bags and ran up to her room. She was excited, she wanted to wear the dress right now, but swallowed the feeling and went back downstairs for a midday dinner.

When she finished her dinner, she went on over to the Mayfair, where her mom believes she cleans the hotel rooms there, and went straight to the basement. She found her father already there.

"Hi father," she greeted. He was behind the bar, looking at the liquor, he turned and saw her.

"Hi dumpling," he smiled. He handed her the broom and dustpan, as he did everyday.

"Pick out a pretty new dress for tonight?" He asked her as she began sweeping.

"Yes, and it's beautiful," she said, twirling the broom in her hand. She set it back down and began sweeping some more, getting ready for the crowd that night.

The basement opened at the same time every night, 8 o'clock in the evening. Most likely after everyone's eaten supper. It stayed open until 2 o'clock in the morning, when the last drunk leaves.

Charles looked upwards in a haze at a doctor and could hear sirens somwehre nearby. "what the...?" He fell back into uncounsciousnes and awoke later when the ambulance stopped at the hospital. "Hurry and get the stretcher so we can get this guy inside." He could see the two men run inside the hospital but he didn't stick around for them to treat them. By the time they had found a stretcher and had gotten back out, charles was already a block away, though he was moving at a slow pace. "damn it, I've got to learn to be more careful. Let's just hope ginty has something at the bar for bleeding." He grabbed onto a light as a wave of pain came from the wound on his side but he kept on moving. "Gotta hurry before they realize I'm gone."

Doris heard a truck rumbling into the back lot of the Mayfair. "Sounds like Joe's here with the good stuff," she told her father. He nodded and went outside to help unload the barrels. She went behind the counter and began wiping down the glasses, getting all the dust off.

((Ugh... that's it for tonight... no more thinking please!! D: ))

Joe entered the bar with some barrels. The others that drove with Joe kept bringing loads down. "Ginty, where do you want these? I've got a few casks on their way."

"Back room, same as always. One of these days you'll stop asking."

"Yeah, maybe, but I'd doubt it. Anyway, I'll bring down some more. Anything special I should wear tonight?"

"Let's go with wearing something different than that raggedy shirt and those old pants. And try doing your hair?"

"I'll think about it." He grinned, then caught sight of Doris. "Hey there kiddo. Business last night went without a hitch, though Charlie went off on his own and I walked. Dunno where the kid is now. Anyway," he stretched and started for the stairs, "back to work."

"He could be anywhere, but hey, he knows his stuff," she told Joe as she shrugged her shoulders. She took down another glass and started wiping it clean, she looked at the men bringing in the liquor, and into the room where her father puts it in bottles.

((Blah... last one... please... crying ))

Lillian groaned into her pillow, rolling over. She hadn't gotten much buisiness the night before, but she was still tired. She buried her head into her pillow, trying to snag a few more precious minutes of sleep.

The mayfair was finally in sight, joe and some of his guys were loading beer in the back. "Heh, glad to see joes here. ...Wow, I never realized how sarcastic I can be." He walked past one of joes men, noticing the man eyeball his wounds. "What you looking at. This is nothing rookie, you'll see even worse stuff in this job." He laughed as he walked toward the stairs as the kid watched him in fright. "Hey, anyone down here. I need a few bandages." He stepped out into view, clutching his bloody side, blood dripping onto the floor. "Oh and joe, one of your guys is freaking out upstairs."

"Boy," Joe said, carrying a cask on his shoulder, "my men don't freak out. They've been in this business for as long as you've been out of your mom. You're lucky he didn't lay you out. And stop bleeding around here, you're attracting flies and unwanted attention, not to mention bleeding on their stuff." He put the cask in the back and went back up, brushing against Charlie's shoulder, "Hey, watch where you're going, junior," and he made his way up to the truck again.
