zombiecide Danish is an official language of Greenland, I guess that's what they referred to. (And it's not and official language of Iceland!)
The only knowledge of Greenlandic languages I have is from Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow. Reminds me that I want to re-read that book.
I translate Norwegian lyrics with a Swedish dictionary. no it's the second language (probably depends on area) they speak Greenlandic as Hellsbitch said. and Danish is the second langauge of Icelandic not the first

Hey, I just found a source that states Iceland has no official language, because they never saw the necessity to declare any.
Kokoroki, you have to realize that Iceland is a country on it's own, while Greenland is a self-governed Danish territory.
Iceland belonged to Denmark once, I know. But - as far as I can say as an outsider who isn't fluent in Icelandic -, Icelanders are proud of their own language.
As far as I know, Iceland was colonised during the 9th and 10th century, and soon swore to its independency.
In 1262 Norwegians conquered Iceland, which in 1380 formed with Denmark the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. (Denmark was dominant in this political union. So much, that the Norwegian language boksmal, which is spoken by up to 90% of Norwegians, is actually a Norwegianzied Danish.)
The Danish occupants weren't too nice to the Icelanders. I don't know much, but I know the Icelanders were prohibited to sing, among other things.
In 1904 Iceland was allowed to become self-governed (as Greenland is today), in 1944 Iceland declared its independency.
I think nearly every Icelander is at least bilingual. As far as I know, it's prohibited to dub movies (even if there was somebody who was crazy enough to actually do this), and for every new concept they come up with an own word.
Uh, I like underdogs, did you notice?
And: I have to translate some wikipedia entries to English. (English may have more entries ... but the German ones usually are way more sophisticated!)

Kokoroki Utah(worst place in the USA) My descendants on my mom's side swedish Danish dad's Celtic Swedish Pocohontus (1%) english( 1%) I want to learn danish because I want to know more about the danish side of my family and I want to visit Scandinavia (denmark) I really don't think it sounds too bad
You just wait till you get here... Not many foreigners are able to understand the actual spoken language here, heck, sone danes cant understand some of the dialects here, me included.
Though this post really should be in the Danish discussion sweatdrop

But yeah. We were kinda mean to the Icelandic people. I blame the king! ninja
I knew Iceland never made a language official, but I didnt know... some of the other things xd (dont mind me, I'm in a weird mood right now...)
Iceland is very proud of their language, and even though most students there take danish in school (So they later can come here and get a proper education) they prefer not to speak it.
When I was in Iceland with Hades and his family, I had to meet the whole family ofcourse. Now, Hades' grandmother asked me something in Icelandic and, having done some research before I went there, I answered her in english. The reason? The Icelandic people prefer English or German to Danish. Why? The past. Icelandic people are well known for their ability to hold grudges, yet not make them too obvious.
The only Icelanders who are not bilingual are those 60+ and even then, most speak close to fluent English.
Some years ago, back when Donald Duck fisrt started, the only language you could get the comic in, was Danish. Back then, Danish were also a forced subject in school. This, ofcourse, made the kids look very much forward to 4th grade when they would be taught Danish because now they wouldnt need their siblings or parents to read the comic aloud to them. Danish and English were both taught from 4th grade and onward, just like english is today in Danish and Icelandic schools.

HellsBitch No they weren't stoned, they just tried to mix all the nordic languages of the time into one. Or... something. I have no idea. But I guess there's a good reason as to why Danish has been classified as one of the hardest languages ever to learn. No realy grammatic rules, no Kasus... there's always letters in a word that really shouldnt be there or isnt spoken... It's worse than Finnish...
FF has had Norwegian fics for a while... I think there's a few danish there too, though I'm not sure...
Yes, Danish ones as well. But I don't want to read Danish fics, because I know I'll never ever get the pronounciation right without learning the basics of your language first. Norwegian is way easier when it comes to that. rolleyes
But somehow Danish intrigues me. rolleyes

I think Danish is harder than English. I still can't pronounce the word 'meget'. It sounds so easy, but it's definitely not.
Norwegian, on the other hand, is easy. It's like speaking Swedish with a Norwegian accent, lol. ^^

Mivi I think Danish is harder than English. I still can't pronounce the word 'meget'. It sounds so easy, but it's definitely not. Norwegian, on the other hand, is easy. It's like speaking Swedish with a Norwegian accent, lol. ^^ Mivi , a fact about english is that all native speakers have trouble spelling words even out of college. Especially with our IM language and different pronouncations of the same words I agree about Norwegian but I think It sounds a lot different though(I laugh at the boys accent) in my teach yourself swedish the girl speaker sounds more british then the guy I hate to ask again( I asked this in the Danish DG) but do you know any websites that have norsk dialects?

Kokoroki nope your wrong Hell's b***h Finnish is the WORLD'S HARDEST LANGUAGE even a relative of mine said that he wasn't considered fluent until almost after he left for a 2 year stay. If you don't pronounce a word right it could mean something else. their use of double consonants helps do that. English is a lot worse than Danish(especially American english)
You study danish. Tell me, can you tell when it's 'en' and when its 'et' in front of a substantiv? Most people cant. Many danish children cant until they reach 4th-5th grade.
We have no rules for inflection of words.
I think Finnish is a fun language, but I dont have the courage to start learning it. I still need to try to learn spanish and german. I havent started the spanish yet, and I prolly wont until I'm done with college. Which, if I'm lucky, is in two years.
