SpineRaker: Well, that certainly explains why I've never heard of the Phero Rune before. Many thanks for clearing that up for me.

IMO it doesn't take the death of somebody really close to be a catalyst it could easily be somebody else.
However, despite the death of the "said character" (refer to above post to read spoilers for those who are wondering who this character is), one has to keep in mind that Riou himself wasn't very close to this character in the first place.
Riou has never been close to those under him- true, he cares for their wellbeing and such, but other than that, he has never been linked to them
emotionally. Plus, we also are aware of the fact that in war, people -do- die. Thus, this character's death, despite seeming to be a rather large sacrifice, is actually no different from other generals who have lost their lives in the battlefield.
Yes, he did die for the sake of giving Riou a fair shot at Matilda (it's Matilda, right? Not Muse), but his death is only amplified by the fact that it is the only one to be mentioned and to be dwelled upon for more than er- 15 seconds, with music to boot.
On the other hand, Nanami, who has been by Riou's side ever since he can remember, is so close to him that they can almost be taken as kin. Riou, despite being a quiet character, does have feelings of remorse, and he takes out these feelings by venting it upon Jowy and Highland. He knows very well that he can't take it out on his own troops, so he only had one option left: to charge forward and to defeat Highland. In fact, it could be that his decision to attack L'Renouielle (sp?) was driven on the fact that he felt too guilty of Nanami's death and wanted some way to justify her death.
