Maya peered into the barrel, recognizing the murky white color of the water. Wrinkling her nose, Maya grabbed the stick and began to stir, at first clumsy and then, getting used to the motions, more smoothly. The water in the barrel lapped against the edges quietly, not making any effort to escape the dark brown wood. Maya stirred and stirred, her arms growing more and more tired. No wonder Shuga hated making furs! Grinning, Maya worked harder, knowing that she would be doing this alright, even if it was just her first time doing it. She'd seen it done enough times, had assisted and listened to how it was done enough times to know that she could do it on her own. Maya was only grateful that there was no reading involved, that she didn't have to manipulate her chakra. Hunting was solely an activity that required her to use her physical prowess to succeed, and that was what made her happiest. With a jolt, Maya realized that the water was not making the scraping sounds of undissolved limestone anymore. Gazing into the water again, she smiled as she recognized the eerie, almost crystalline white shade of the water within the barrel. She didn't, however, touch it - she knew it would still be extremely hot, and she was depending on that. The furs and leathers needed to soak in water water, but it was easier to let the barrel cool than it was to try and heat up all the water within it. Now understanding why Shuga filled the barrel with four pots and not five, Maya threw in several fire-heated stoves, watching the water level rise as the rocks displaced it. That would do it, then. It was time to hunt...after a short rest.

Maya lifted her eyes, noting that there was smoke coming from the village. Great, who was attacking now, hm? Not enough that they'd come back without Ichi, but the other countries wanted to pick on them now? Maya felt a small longing for the older man from the fire country, Koro, who'd sent them back home after they got rid of that evil white-haired banshee and the rest of her motley crew..still, a fire was never a good sign. Growling, she left her dehairing solution (she still planned on hunting in the morning) and headed towards the village center, Baki only one step behind her.

Karite and Kore returned to the grounds as quickly as Karite could carry the now heavy cub. The lion was more then likely hungry and would need some food in the morning, the only question was did Karite have what it took to bring down an animal. Kore did but it was in his blood. Karite's skills in hunting were not so good as seen early on this day. Shaking the thought away Karite continued into the foul smelling grounds. Someone had been here and by the looks of things had taken nothing. That meant it must have been Maya and Baki. That would have made Karite so much more happier. For now though he needed to sleep as well. He was tired and so were the cubs. Crawling into the largest tent on the grounds. Karite put Kore on the ground along side his sister before he himself laid down to sleep beside them. It was much warmer in the tent then it was outside. Winter was such a miserably time of year.

After slinking off from the village 'meeting', Maya returned to the grounds, knowing immediately that Kore and Karite were there. Sleeping in Shuga's tent, Maya didn't register what was wrong with that, and dropped off to sleep in her own tent, Baki curled up with her. They would wake early, and hunt - the cubs were likely to be hungry, and Maya knew they would probably need a few leathers and furs for the winter, though which animal they could hunt for furs was a mystery to the girl. Then again, there was that rumor of big cats in the jungle...
-----
Maya awoke at the break of dawn, almost irritated that it was so late. Exiting her tent, she felt the temptation to drag Karite out of Shuga's tent. That was what had bothered her - the largest tent on the grounds was reserved for clan leader, and Karite was neither clan nor leader. Perhaps he could be clan, but not leader - she was clan leader in Shuga's ever popular absences. With a low, guttural growl, Maya turned harshly away from the grounds and checked on her dehairing solution. It had cooled because of ... snow!? Maya suddenly registered the cold beneath her feet, and hissed sharply. Not good...with a soft snarl, she worked to start a fire, agonizing with how long it took. Finally, a spark caught and flourished, and soon a fire blazed brightly in the middle of the grounds. Stacking it with as much wood as she could put within the fire pit, she warmed her hands a little bit - she didn't need her hands to hunt, only for her feet to be silent. Baki could bring down the beast - that was why they hunted together. She should just send Baki, and work on reheating the solution, but Baki would tear the skin from the animal and eat it, instead of letting Maya skin it first. With a groan, she stood and tugged on Baki's ears, leading the way towards the Forest of Sorrows, where plenty a beast would probably still the world as brown and green. The thick canopy there that extended towards the waterfall and lagoon probably prevented a lot of the snow from getting on the ground...which Maya was depending on.

Kore woke up first to the smell of smoke. Snapping up and pointing his ears up slightly he heard voices and growls. Only two people did both. Maya and Shuga, but the other growl was much to deep which meant Baki. Sticking his head out the tent Kore saw Maya and Baki heading off towards the forest. Rushing back into the tent Kore began to tug on Karite's white pants. At first the boy just rolled over, but tugging harder the boy jumped up slowly from his sleep. Leading him out towards the fire he said they were going on a trip. That was fun, hopefully it involved food.
Karite rolled over on his side and felt the could winds cut through the tent like bandits knifes. He did not want to move until Kore began to tug lightly on his pants. It was the only piece of clothing he had left so if the cub ripped them he would not be happy at all. Getting up his hair more untammed then he ever wish it to be. Standing up Kore managed to lead Karite into the snow with no shoes and in front of a fire. As the boy stood thre fixing his hair into a tight ponytail Karite noticed no one was around, but if this fire was here that meant Maya and the others were back. That meant that she was alive and so was Baki. That made him so happy, he would give her a surprise. He would collect firewood from the Forest of Sorrows. "Come on Kore we are going on a mission."

Maya and Baki returned to the grounds after a while - it was already morning, and they'd left before dawn. Not a terribly long time, but long enough. Baki, deciding his work was done, left both deer by the fire pit and curled up a couple feet back, shutting his eyes and snoozing. He knew that Maya needed space for the next part - Shuga always spread out all over the place! Soon, light snores filled the air...
...Maya didn't even know where to start. She bit her lip, took a deep breath, and closed her eyes. Important: skinning. She'd skin everything first, and then rub salt into them. It would take a while to finish the skins, but at least while those were getting prepared, she could prepare the oodles of meat that Baki had felt necessary to bring home. With a slight smile to herself, Maya pulled her sharpest kunai from her pouch and began to prepare the hides, cutting them in, hopefully, the right way. She started with the lynx, most eager to prepare that fur for herself. As for the two deer...well, she could keep the furs or make them leathers; either way, they'd be useful. She tugged at the skin, severing the sinews from the lynx's body from the layer of muscle that kept its fur on its body. She wrinkled her nose - yuck, carnivore meat...

[I don't feel like hassling myself with the dice glitch - I'll post for every roll, but I'm rolling a bunch at a time cause the glitch sucks and Gaia needs to fix it. If anyone has an issue with that, I won't do it anymore, but rwar! ]
Maya lay the bloodied skin to the side, careful to keep the outside fur from touching the muscle on the inside of it. Pulling the buck towards her, she made the cut again - from the base of the throat to just under its tail, completely disregarding its head and neck. The bit of skin there wasn't worth the effort it took to actually get it off. Like the lynx, the buck had several hundred sinews and muscle fibers connected to the skin that covered it. Maya sighed, annoyed with the hassle, though in reality she was pretty psyched. She'd never actually skinned anything with such precision, had never needed an animal for anything more than meat. Shuga had provided her with clothes, Mai had done the skinning and such. And look at them now - one disappeared again, and the other stayed on her farm, now that there was no reason to visit a kage that wasn't available.

Karite and Kore entered slowly behind Maya and Baki. Kore went to lay next to Baki and nap while it was cold to the cub the heat from Baki would do him good. The cub was tired and he would need his energy if he was going to go out with Karite again. That boy seemed to have more energy then anyone he had ever meet in his life. It didn't matter though they understood each other and that was what mattered most. Their had been a partnership forged between the two and that was something no one could break.
Karite dropped his wood by the fire and stretched his back out. He had a few things to ask Maya but he wanted to practice with his Jo as well so he would train later. He would try his best to drag answers out of her.. It was also extremely cold so he would keep his body warmer this way he hopped. "So Maya, I would get my shoes but by know I am sure they are long gone. Since I have no shoes and my shirt was shredded and my pants are on their way there as well, all I have left is my shuirken and kunai. Do you know where I can get some clothes?"

After putting the buck's skin to the side the same way she had the lynx's, Maya began working on the doe's body. From neck to tail, she slid her kunai, relieved that the doe had been relatively young, and hadn't had time to mature all her muscles yet. Even so, the muscle mass on the doe was much less than that of the buck, especially because the doe didn't have to carry around the massive rack of antlers on her head. Reminded of this, Maya made a mental note to cut off the antlers of the buck to use at a later date for another project - she might never use them, but you could never have enough pieces of antler to use for tools.

Maya put aside the doe's skin, and grabbed the buck's head, cutting off the antlers. She then grabbed the buck's skin and began to rub salt into the bloody side, pondering Karite's question. She shrugged half heartedly, not really thinking about it. Her own clothes were relatively tattered, and she hadn't actually thought to replace them. Hm...she would probably have to look into that...perhaps some of the buck meat she could use for bartering with Mai...with a snort, she continued to rub salt into the skin, still thinking. Well, they both had a dilemma...and yet the only thing that Maya could think to retort was, "Shoes are useless."

Finishing the buck, Maya let it rest on the snowy ground hair-side down, and reached for the doe's skin. Hesitating, she turned to Karite and motioned towards the wood he had carried here. "Add that to the fire...gonna need it," she said softly, meaning all five of them - two humans, a lion, and two cubs. She turned her attention back towards the doe skin, and like she did to the previous one, began to rub salt evenly over the bloodied side that had been attached to the doe's body. How would she prepare the meat, then? She could cut the lynx meat into strips, maybe into tiny cub-size treats...maybe Mai had a recipe for them, and she could barter that too, for clothes and such. Hunting was a hassle, and not only that, it took so much work to actually prepare the skins and such...Maya sighed.

Putting the salted doe aside, Maya grabbed the lynx skin and considered it thoughtfully before laying it on the ground, rubbing the salt into it more thoroughly than with the two deer skins. The lynx fur she would keep for colder winter nights, and though the feline had been relatively the same in size as her (granted, fatter and longer), the fur would be excellent to wrap herself in. It wasn't a thick as it could be, but it was still good - it was only the beginning of winter, and so the new fur that had sprouted still had some thickness to gain...or it would have, had the lynx still been alive. Chuckling, Maya finished salting the fur and settled it with the two deer skins. Now...what to do with the meat..?

Karite was a little drawn back by her cold exterior. That wasn't going to stop him though. He would chip away at her till there was nothing left to block the Maya he knew was in there somewhere. he set the Jo down and walked over to the wood and tossed into the fire with ease. Sitting down he sat and really began to watch seeing if he could hit a string in order to get his information. "So What about a shirt at least? You cant tell me shirts are useless in this kind of weather. It is crazy to think anything can survive the winter without something to protect them. Baki and Kore have fur and even you have a shirt."

Maya lifted her eyes and locked them on his. "I'm a girl," she said bluntly, motioning towards her chest. Shaking her head, she shrugged - and thought a little bit. With a pout on her face, Maya shrugged again and said in a soft voice, "Mai made Ichi-sama-sensei a robe once. Maybe she can make shirts. Aunt Shuga..." Maya halted, and shook her head. She didn't feel like talking about her aunt, and now she just wanted to hide in her tent. But she had to take care of the meat...hm...there was that idiot with the giant sword that lived with the crazy island woman.

(Damn Glitch!!!)
Karite got the answer he was looking for but it seemed that something about this Shuga bothered Maya as well. Not wanting to push his luck he still he had to know but that was not something he felt was his business and there was no point asking about Mai since he meet her already. One question would be where the hell was he going to sleep. "Maya, while I am staying here...where am I suppose to sleep exactly? I don't want to impose, but it seems that this place was made for two." Karite could only suggest lightly that he wanted to stay for good but it was almost to much to ask to become part of her family so quickly. not everyone could be as trusting as he was.
