The dog is a domesticated form of its relative, the wolf. The domestic dog is one of the most commonly kept pets and in some cultures is used as a food source ((ew)). Dogs have been also trained to help hunt animals because of their stronger sense of hearing and smell. Kasai immediately thought of his encounter with the messenger-nins’ birds. Maybe if he trained a dog to get rid of the birds for him… No, Kasai thought. I do have some respect for them anyways… Kasai continued reading.

Dogs vary in size, from small (ex. Chihuahuas) to large (ex. German Shepherds). They have various colored coats, from light tan to brown and black. The animals’ fur may also be curly or straight and smooth or coarse. “Eh?” muttered Kasai, scratching his head. How can dogs possibly have so many variations like that? It seemed very much impossible to Kasai, who didn’t think very often out of proportion. “Random mutations,” said Kasai, snapping his fingers. He continued reading.

((rewriting everything in my own words is annyoying...))

Many people believe that dogs have descended from wolves, and some people extend this to that they evolved from tames wolves. Some people have used these tamed dogs as “beasts of burden,” doing various jobs for man, such as hunting or laboring (ex. Huskies used to pull sleds). Some people use dogs as a source of food or use their fur as clothing. Kasai stared at the paper, very much confused at the various uncivilized acts against dogs. He was actually feeling a bit sick reading it…

Compared to wolves of the same size, dogs have 20% smaller skulls and 10% smaller brains. They also have relatively small teeth. Experts believe these changes occurred because of the less needed use of their good-hunter traits because of human domestication. Some people also believe that dogs’ eyes droop because of the lack of jaw exercise. “Pff,” Kasai scoffed. Kasai doesn’t believe in speculation and doesn’t care that much if there isn’t real evidence to prove points. Kasai flipped ahead a couple pages and continued reading.

Dogs have very acute hearing and a very strong sense of smell. However, their eyes only allow them to see things similar to red-green color blindness in humans. Dogs also have the ability to generate large amounts of energy in a short period of time, allowing them to run very quickly. Dogs’ hearts and lungs are also oversized compared to their body. Kasai stared at the page for a bit, trying to comprehend all that he just read. It seemed a bit confusing, because of all the various scientific terms. However, Kasai was one to think long and hard about much, and would understand it in a while.

((why can't I ever get a good roll!?))

Dogs’ spleen also contains many extra red blood cells. When participating in strenuous activity, such as playing or running, the spleen releases these blood cells, providing much more oxygen to be used. The oversized heart and lungs will now work at their full capacity. Kasai put the book down, then yawned and stretched after reading this. He wondered when the book would start talking about actual animal training. Kasai stretched again and then picked the book to continue.

((YES!))

If dogs are well trained, they would be less likely to be aggressive or to attack other people. Their behavior is dependent on their treatment and car by their owners. This part was very simple and easy to understand. “It’s kinda obvious…” muttered Kasai. “Anybody who was abused would end up like that. It’s just nature…” Kasai turned a page and continued reading.

Compared to wolves and coyotes, dogs are less adept at observational learning, but more responsive to instrumental conditioning. Kasai stared at the page for a few minutes before giving up. These terms were a bit complex for him to comprehend. He scratched his head and yawned. Hopefully actually training a pet would be a lot easier than reading textbook material…

Dogs are valued for their intelligence. This intelligence is expressed differently from different breeds of dogs. For example, the Border Collies are respected for their ability to learn tricks quickly. Some other species show their intelligence by being clever by stealing food or escaping from a yard. This part was easy to understand, and Kasai just kept on reading without stopping.

Types of working dogs include: assistance dogs (help the physically impaired), detection (sniffs out explosives), guard dogs, herding dogs (helps farmers), hunting dogs, police dogs, Search and Rescue dogs, therapy dogs (make hospitalized people feel better), and many more. Kasai hadn’t realized how useful dogs are, and how they should be given better treatment and other stuff. Kasai scratched his head and flipped a page.

A large problem in society is cruelty to animals. There are two types of cruelty: passive and active. Passive cruelty is when animals are harmed unintentionally, or are cases of neglect. Some examples are starvation, dehydration, insufficient shelter, and failure to get medical care when needed. Kasai dropped the book in horror, his eyes widening and his jaw dropping open. So much neglect, yet not enough solutions for it. Maybe when he would grow up, Kasai would be some kind of animal rights activist. “…” -_-' Or maybe a vet…

Active cruelty is one of the most disturbing cases of psychological problems. Active cruelty is the malicious intent to hurt or abuse animals. This behavior is related to sociopathic behavior. Some people execute these actions for various reasons. One reason is that the abuse may reflect of previous abuse that the person may have suffered, or possibly just to show how much power a person may have. Kasai dropped the book again, and leaned back in his chair. He was sweating profusely and really needed a moment to calm down. He cupped his eyes with his palms and tried to breathe in and out deeply. Kasai didn’t understand everything that the book said, but knew enough to scare the daylights out of him. He straightened up and picked up the book again and flipped a couple pages into the next section.

Dogs are susceptible to disease as much as any other mammal, particularly high when exposed to high humidity and/or extreme temperatures. Various diseases common with dogs are rabies, canine parvovirus, and canine distemper. Dogs can also get pretty much any disease a human can get. Kasai breathed a sigh of relief, because now he found a topic that isn’t gruesome or disturbing. However, he didn’t understand much of the text. Kasai continued reading anyways.
