Rae was polite and smiled as he talked about his life. Did hers really look so interesting? she though at his words before her mind reminded her he only knew part of the story. But something about the way he described her life seemed off. Could life really be so simple? As he turned the conversation back to her life she paused for a moment biting her lip hoping her eyes wouldn't betray her as they always seemed to while old sorrow resurfaced with vivid images. Smiling carefully she said, "Oh my life really isn't as interesting as it must seem. I guess I wanted a change of scenery and as for my occupation, just different things." Rae shrugged in a 'no big deal' kind of way. Having long since come to and accepted the idea that she was cursed in some form she started to worry that she would spread her bad luck to him. Running a hand through her hair she pushed the thought from her mind she was trying ti find something to change the subject to when the loud ringing of the phone startled her making her fall off the barstool she had been sitting on. Though unlike last time she was laughing when she hit the floor even from her point of view it had been comical the way she was waving her arms trying to regain balance. Pushing back up to her feet she glared at the ringing phone, "I wasn't aware there was phone service in this house again." she said laughing until the machine clicked on.

An all to familiar voice came on, "Rae. Your a hard woman to track down. You left before we had a chance to talk. Call me." Staring at the machine with open surprise and horror as his voiced filled the quiet Rae's face became blank as it had been at the dock. The man the voice belonged to had been the straw that broke the camel's back. The event the pushed her home.

Walking over to the machine she pushed the delete button resisting the urge to run away. She had left to get away from him and what he had done to her and somehow he had found her again. Looking at Lantis she said almost helplessly, "Did you want to go somewhere. It seems to nice a day to be indoors." the lie fell unconvincingly from her lips.

"I don't usually eat breakfast or lunch," she said after a few moments had passed. And it was true. Most of the time she was too nausous after waking up to handle eating anything for breakfast, let alone for lunch. She had tried once and ended up calling out from work she had gotten so sick. Running a hand through her hair, Nikki smiled slightly as she too watched Marisol. Children always seemed to be able to glance at the world around them, even the most evil parts of it, and carry on with life around them.

"I know it's not the healthest thing to do, but I honestly don't think about it too much. One minute it's morning and it's time for work, the next it's evening and it's time for dinner." Opening her water, she twisted off the cap and took a small sip, offering him some. That too was habit for her. She had always been one to share things, even if she didn't have much to share.

Go somewhere? Lantis thought just about unfazed by the message. "I suppose you are right. But are you certain you'd be wanting to spend the rest of your day with a stranger?" It was probably annoying her, but Lantis would rather be sure than to over stay his welcome and be assuming. He kept his composure rather easily but felt there was something wrong. Instincts told the young man that perhaps...it had something to do with the message on the machine just now. Or perhaps he was being nosey? Lantis thought for a moment longer before deciding to indulge the young lady. "Let's go then." He took her silence as consent and got up and dusted himself off. "I don't have anything else to do this afternoon, it would be good to make the most out of a nice day."

It had been such a long time....hasn't it?

A small smile flickered across her face, "I suppose a day with a stranger is better than a day alone." Following him out the sun blinded her for a second but the light did seem to sear back some of the darkness from that voice. She had left. He had her number that was all. No one knew her address and the people that did were not permitted by law to give it out. As breath came a little easier she was heading down the path when she actually remembered for once. Running the few steps back to the door she climbed up on the porch railing fishing a key out of the clean gutters to lock the door before tossing it back up there, "I always forget to lock the doors here." she said with a sigh shaking her head. Not sure where there was to go or what to do she remembered the flier that had come in the mail, making her speak up as they walked down the path from her door, "I heard there is a carnival in town."

Laurence only smiled at her comment. The government was constantly checking up on him, hoping to find some hint of the mob's appearance. After the fifteenth call, Laurence stopped answering. And they stopped calling.

"Sounds like a plan." He tried not to think about it as he followed Serena. It the past now, right he asked himself. He pulled down his jersey with a tug, hoping to distract his mind with something else.

Serena smiled at him a moment and nodded before taking out her keys and sticking it into the door, opening up the general door for the apartment complex. "Here we are," she said with a nod of the head and shut the door behind them, making sure that it locked. Two flights up and she found them standing before her door, painted with abstract art, as the place belonged to her, not to mention, the abstract art. "Don't mind my crazy door..." she said with a sheepish grin before unlocking her door and stepping in, closing that one behind them also.

The apartment was large, to say the least, and it was a surprise that she could afford such a place, living by herself. The floor were all hard wood, except for in her living room, which was carpeted, and her bedroom and guest room, also carpeted. The ceilings were vaulted, as she was on the top floor, and there was a loft above the living room, able to access it by climbing a set of wooden ladder up and into it. The loft, she used as an extra bedroom when company was over, but lately, was being used as an office for herself. Her kitchen was also large, and had a large window above the sink for her to look out and see the beach. The dark room, she made in a room near the living room, and had blocked out all the light from it, in order to make it perfect. All in all, it was a large, and very modern looking apartemnt, while at the same time, very comfortable and homey.

Removing her shoes, she crossed the living room into the dark room, and closed the door behind her before emerging a few minutes later, camera out of her hand and locked away in the room. She closed the door, makign sure no light would slip in, and brushed herself off. "So... you said you coached for a living, right?" she said smiling, darting into another room near the dark room... her bedroom. "Make yourself at home," she said yelled to him as she commenced in changing out of her wet clothes. She pulled on a pair of antique washed, slightly ripped pants, and a black v-neck shirt that was perfectly fitted to her body, as it stretched to accomodate the wearer. She then pulled on a pair of socks, and slipped on her sweatshirt, emerging from her bedroom.

"Uhm... let me show you around..." she said, smiling as she began to show him the kitchen, dining room, living room, dark room, her bedroom, the guest bedroom, her bathroom, the guest bathroom, and the loft. Lastly, she opened the sliding doors connected to the living room, and stepped out onto a balcony, where she had a few chairs and a table. "I sit out here and watched the sunset every day," she said softly with a smile at Laurence. "I like it up here... Glad I bought this place back when it was cheap, or I'd be paying out the arse for it now," she said with a laugh and a shake of the head.

The door brought the soccer player out of his daze. Bright brown eyes stared at it in amusement before Laurence stepped into the apartment after Serena. He gazed around, taking in everything with wide eyes. "Wow," he whispered in awe. It reminded him so much of his own two story condo, the apartment sharing that same cozy feeling. When she mentioned his job as a coach, he nodded. He decided not to mention the fact that he was a bartender, for that job was a bit on the humiliating side.

The man trailed after Serena. When they stepped out onto the balcony, Laurence stepped ahead to gaze out at the view. He turned around when she spoke to him. "I can see why," he smiled. "It's an amazing view."

Serena looked up at Laurence and smiled, nodding. "Yeah, I must admit that I do love the view," she added with a small laugh as she moved over to the railing and leaned lightly on it, breathing in deeply, the smell of the ocean air filling her senses and the wind wafting through her blonde hair gently, cooling her off. For that moment, she didn't feel a single care in the world, and she liked that.

Turning her head slightly, her eyes came to rest on Laurence. She liked having him there. It was a nice change from being alone, and for the past month since Devon had gotten killed, she hadn't really felt that familiar feeling of companionship until today. She was glad that she had bumped into him on her way back to the apartment. Her eyes softened. She had to admit that she really did appreciate his company, and in that instant, she realized that she was looking at him the exact same way that she used to look at Devon. With care.

She averted her eyes and shook her head, realizing she had been staring at him... Not so much staring, it was too harsh of a word... But rather, allowing her gaze to stop for a moment too long, and she only hoped he had not caught her looking at him like that. If he had, she hoped he wouldn't have caught on to how she was lookign at him, but to be truthful to herself, one could not mistaken that look for anything else, and the way Serena wore most of her emotions, the emotion that that look portrayed was hard to miss. Still, Serena had to hope he hadn't noticed.

Wanting to clear her mind, and hopefully change the subject away from anything that might come up, she turned and looked at Laurence once more. "Hey, are you hungry at all? I can make us some dinner, you know... I mean, you did buy me coffee. Since you're here, you might as well stay for a little..." she added, realizing how needy she must have sounded, but hoped he wouldn't think that. It had been so long since she had actually cooked for anyone but herself, and to think that she might be able to cook for a second person was exciting to her.

Gabriel looked up, surprised to see Nikki offering him a sip of her water. Milkshakes made him thirsty - he took an air drink and handed it back to her. "Thanks. You know, that kind of diet is really unhealthy. How do you have the energy to go to work?" he asked. He knew he couldn't function without at least a fruit and some yogurt for breakfast. He remembered his ex-girlfriend not eating for three days before coming to visit him the last summer they were together. She had passed out. Gabriel had never been so scared in his entire life. Well, his life outside of jail anyway. He glanced at Nikki and felt kind of guilty. What would she have done if she knew the real reason why he was 'in a tight spot' financially? She probably wouldn't have spoken to him, let alone bought him and Marisol lunch.

Taking another sip of the water, she twisted the cap back on and leaned back in her seat, glancing at him in curosity. The truth was that there had been times when her father had been so angry he had beaten her into unconsiousness, leaving her unable to move and get herself anthing to eat. When this continued to happen, Nikki had simply become used to not eating, relying on the food she did eat to energize her until the next time she was able to. On the one hand, she was small because of it and more easily able to get away from her father incase he found her again; on the other hand, she often had spells of dizzyness and even fainted occasionally. Of course, she had gone to a doctor to try and remdy the situtation, but nothing ever seemed to work. So she stuck to her one meal a day, occasionally having a peice of fruit if she got too dizzy during work.

Smiling, the lie came easily from her lips. "I've just got a lot of energy, not to mention my kids are more than willing to share theirs with me."

Gabriel choked on a curly fry. "You don't have kids kids, do you?" he asked. He quickly took a bite of his cheeseburger to keep his own mouth shut. It was embarrassing when she had asked him about it before, but he couldn't help but ask. Since she said it so casually, he figured that they were probably kids she watched or worked with, but it never hurt to check, and he had been caught offguard.

She blushed and laughed at the same time at his reaction, having never seen one quite so funny. Often people took the way she said it the wrong way assuming she meant children of her own, so his reaction was somewhat expected. Grinning slightly, she quickly shook her head no. Laughing again, she passed him the water again, knowing that his milkshake likely wasn't going to help him swallow. "No, I don't have kids of my own, though I'd like to later on in life." Brushing a strand of hair out of her face, she snagged a fry. "I'm a kindergarden teacher."

Laurence could feel Serena's gaze. His face felt warm, but the pink hue was not visible because of the tanned skin. He continued to gaze out at the beach, keeping his gaze focused on what was ahead of him. Only when Serena talked to him did he turn to look at her.

"Sounds good. I think I shall accept your offer." The man smiled, his brown hair falling in front of his face. His hands gripped the railing lightly, a breeze gently blowing through his hair, and lifting it from his face. The idea that someone else was cooking for him made the idea of dinner actually sound appetizing. Months of microwavable mac and cheese, along with a variety of other dinners had left him hungry for somethingt hat actually came off the oven and not out of a beeping microwave. But to try and cook on the stove was like asking Laurence to burn the house down.

Serena smiled, almost wanting to clap her hands together, her heart having skipped a few beats. She was excited. It had been so long since she had actually cooked for more than herself and she almost wanted to hug Laurence at that moment. She had longed for human contact, especially when it came down to cooking. It was just so difficult to cook for just one person. And a lonely task, at that.

"Well, do you like spaghetti at all?" she asked him hopefully. "If you don't, be honest. I don't want to make something you don't like ant then end up tossing it out. I hate wasting food," she said with a laugh and paused to wait for his answer.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:22 pm

"Of course. Who doesn't like spaghetti?" Laurence's tone was joking. He saw the excited gleam in Serena's eyes, his smile widening slightly. He leaned against the railing, his back facing the gorgeous scene behind them. He shook his head like a dog might, removing the loose strands of brown hair from his face yet again.

When she mentioned tossing out food, the man's eyes grew wide in mock terror. "Throw out food? Never in my life have ever heard such a terrible combination of words," he gasped, playfully though.

She hit him playfully, as one might do when flirting... A large smile was painted across her face and her eyes glittered, almost admiringly at him... It probably also helped for the setting sun to be accentuating them.

"I don't know," she joked, pretending that she was thinking very hard about something. "You'd be surprised at how many people don't enjoy spaghetti. My father hated it!" she said, a brisk shake of the head. She watched as he shook his head out... He looked cute doing that. Catching what she was thinking, she mentally hit herself. What was she doing, thinking that? Was she allowed to think it? For a moment, she almost decided she would ask him to leave, before this went on any further. But she couldn't bring herself to do so. It wouldn't be fair to him... And it wouldn't be fair to herself...

The comment he made brought her out of her thoughts and back into reality with him as she began to laugh. "Yes, very terrible," she said to him with a smile as she motioned to go inside. "C'mon... You're gonna help me," she said with a challenging smirk on her face... "That is, if you're game and you think you're good enough to be in the kitchen?" she said, her voice laced with a tone of challenge.
