FFVI is awesome on all levels.
It is the first FF game to have females be actually usefull, it broke the horrible sterotype that they are only healers. Infact FFVI showed the gaming industry that they can infact be strong and very independent.
My party was, Celes, Terra, Locke and Sabin
Celes and Terra were ironically the strongest characters, they owned everything. Strongest women in a game if you ask me.

Although FFVI threw Celes and Terra into the magic user category, with an inate cure spell, youre right, they werent stereotyped as the feminine, helpless, support characters, most often times previous female characters were. (And still are today in some cases) I think Celes and Terra being magic users was more of a story line decision based on plot and background as opposed to a gender one.
