"Oh....."

So the name did make sense, at least to Cindy as she found staring to the sandwich in front of her. She smiled gently at him as she took the sandwich from him.

"Thank you," she murmured to Adonai.

What a cute kid, kind of reminded her of Miyu.

Donovan had to chuckle about that, the more he listened the more he was sure the kid was just as active and troublesome as some of the children back home.

"She's very.. .active," he commented.

"It's good for her," Ulrich shrugged.

"There are only two things that I wish were different for her," Ulani smiled faintly. "I wish, first of all, that there were other children here her age that she could play with. She's never had anyone ... Adonai's still too young to really play with her."

"Yeah," Ulrich agreed sadly. "At least when we were kids, there was your family, my family, and your aunt's family ..."

"Amara's still here, with Fletcher," Ulani noded, "but Beregond did eventually get married, and instead of living here with his wife, he moved to the city."

"So there's no one here for Aliya to play with," Ulrich sighed. "I mean, it's not as if she's lonely, but she's missing out on her childhood. Growing up too quickly."

Adonai smiled at Cindy and turned a bright shade of red, then turned and scrambled back into his mother's lap, hiding his face in his hands. He opened his fingers a crack to peer at Cindy, giggling a bit.

Cindy chewed on the sandwich thoughtfully, it was a pity there was such a large time different, since with the portals that could be solved. At least somewhat, even though she knew none of her siblings were techncially the same age as Aliya's age. They rarely got to know people outside the family.

"If it weren't for the time difference, Donovan should bring Lin or Kali."

Donovan snorted, "Well with Kali I wouldn't have to worry about her taking anything apart that she couldn't put back together, Lin on the other hand is the type of person to help Aliya to find arrow-wood."

Hell, sometimes he had to wonder about Lin, if Lin was not the type to listen to what he and Kara had to say, then he would really worry.

"Well, it's not like there's any harm in it," Ulani pointed out. "After all, it is a skill she'll need in the future. I admit I think I would have liked to wait until she was a bit older ..."

"She's already an excellent shot," Ulrich said proudly. "And she's not half bad with a blade either."

"But I do want her to have some experiences with other children," Ulani added quickly. "If you think someone would like to come here and play with her, feel free to send them."

Finally finished with his breakfast, Adonai got up on his knees and whispered into Ulani's ear, then slid off her lap and ran out of the room. A moment later came the sounds of him playing in the living room.

"Perhaps next time," Donovan replied, "I'll probably be dropping by more often if I can, though at the moment Lin is with Elnara at the castle. The minx followed me on our last trip and she adores Earendil, and is obsessed with some mountain over there. She wouldn't stop bugging me and Kara about it, didn't think it would hurt to let her go. She would have just gone anyhow...."

He paused to see Adonai go out to play. Donovan supposed now would be a good time as ever.

"At any rate, I do need your help with a few things, well okay, it's several things... several big things.... but that's hindsight on my part."

Cindy finished off her sandwich and hopped (for she was still small enough) off her chair. She gently pushed the chair back into it's place.

"And this is something I won't be able to add my points into," she added, "So I'll go and see to my books."

With that she left for the living room.

Ulani and Ulrich were intrigued by Donovan's mysterious comment, and both of them leaned forward unconsciously to hear more.

"What's up?" Ulani questioned in a quiet tone.

Adonai looked up from where he was playing in the middle of the floor as Cindy entered the room, then scooted over to a corner with his toys - some miniature wooden horses - and continued playing. He kept a curious eye on her, though, wondering what she was going to do.

"My job," Donovan replied, "To lack a better term is to get rid of the Southland's bandit problem, the idea is to come back roughly once every decade to just simply wipe out as many as possible and create a bit of fear and then go home."

He leaned on the table on a bit as he looked thoughtful to explain his problems.

"First, I need information on any activity, you two will know it best in this area, but my other problem is I need to deal with the slaver issue. Between the fact that coming at gods knows what hours of the night, and that I need a place to start," he shrugged a bit, "I need a base of operations. I could like to make the base here inside the valley, and I have the gold to do so, but being around once per decade is going to be a problem."

He muttered a bit knowing the two could still hear him as he added the logistics of it.

"I need someone to take any kids home, I need horses, I would probably have to breed them so I don't have to spend on a horse once every few months my time, and I need people I can trust to breed the horses and look after the damn place."

He paused a bit and then added as an after thought.

"And doesn't mind the fact I only show up once a decade at best."

Well there was a human factor, but that was a given.

Cindy watched Adonai curiously, he probably wanted to play by himself she thought as she went through her bag for her note book. She had two note books, one for taking any notes here, and another one where she wrote down actual research and notes she deemed important to poiton making.

It was the latter she went for, its dark blue and silver cover with a moon on it as she flipped through the notes she made about the plants her mother had brought home.

Ulani and Ulrich thought about it silently for a few moments, exchanging glances all the while; then, finally, Ulrich leaned foward and folded his arms on the table.

"If you want somewhere safe to set up your base," he told Donovan seriously, "then here in the valley would probably be the best - or, at the least, just outside of it. That way it's close to the portal for you, but still under the protection that the mountains can offer it."

"If you're going to do all of that," Ulani added thoughtfully, sitting cross-legged on her chair, "you're going to need ... I would think ... at least two dozen people."

"No one knows horse flesh like we do," Ulrich put in. "We bred horses for a while as well, but we bred them to sell, not to use, and it wasn't worth the hassle of bringing possible customers here or bringing the horses to the potential customers. Besides that, we didn't have much use for the gold it brought in."

"If you'd like," Ulani said hesitantly, "we can offer our services. Help you out with anything you need. If you want land here, it doesn't cost a thing - it doesn't belong to anyone. Save your gold to pay whoever you hire to look after things for you."

"And if you want us to take care of things for you," Ulrich added, "you wouldn't have to worry about paying us a thing. You've already helped us more than we could ever help you."

Adonai looked at Cindy curiously as she took out her book. It was pretty, and he wanted to know more about it. As she read, he scooted closer, an inch or two at a time, making sure not to move if she looked as though she was going to look at him. He pretended to play with his toys, dragging them along with him as he scooted slowly, silently towards her.

Two dozen people he thought, two dozen he probably won't get to know that well and complete strangers to him. It was probably the reason why a lot of things were clan business, no outsiders, but this time it could not be helped. He trusted Ulani and Ulrich, he knew them and they knew him, it would make things easier.

"If you both do not mind," Donovan replied back seriously, "I'm walking blind in the venture for once, all I have is the experience of a business I know."

He thought about it two dozen people, to took after the place, to raise the horses, he should add, he realized that whoever took the kids back should be fighters. Security was also an issue, he was not going to be making any allies among humans doing this.

"At least half of them have to be fighters," he murmured, "They don't like losing their kids, whoever transports the kids home has to be fighters and there has to be fighters left behind. I'm depending on the time difference to creep the humans here out once they realize it's the same person decade after decade, but until then I don't doubt there is someone stupid enough to try and take the kids back."

Cindy blinked, having a feeling she was being watched. She peeked out from over her book to see that Adonai much to her shock was a lot closer than he had been before. Wasn't he on the otherside of the room the last time she checked?

"We don't mind at all," Ulani assured Donovan with a warm smile.

"Not at all," Ulrich agreed. "Besides, it gives us something else to do. Honestly, besides the wars, we've been a little bored. Long life is wonderful, really, but it does make for a bit of boredom."

After a moment, Ulani added, "Would you like us to find the people for you?"

Adonai peeked over his shoulder and saw that Cindy was looking at him, and his face turned red and he spun around quickly and played with his toys a little too obviously. His pointed ears stuck out through his mussy black hair, and they were also beet red.
