Well what if it was in a different setting. Like Buster sword verus a shotgun...all the bullets would bounce off and the sword would still cut.

Well yeah, the Buster sword is different, but the energy sword is a lock-on weapon that draws you close to your enemy, and slashes them clean. Shotgun is, of course, short range. Time it right, and they will never get you.
Now if it were Final Fantasy, then I would want a sword, every time. xd
