Oh dear... "I just meant..." Oh, she hadn't been ready for a stern talking to on her first day! "Oh, yes," she said, "I've looked through both." This was going to be more difficult than she'd thought.

"I just thought, maybe a tour?" She muttered, looking hesitant. Being advised to switch departments already definitely hadn't been today's goal!

Lori paused again, just looking at the young woman. It would be hard to tell whether he was censoring himself or resisting socking her in the head, at least for anyone who didn't know Lori.

"...of Headquarters?" he asked, "Or the department?"

Er. "Of the department. I've seen headquarters," Amari looked a bit awkward now, rubbing the back of her neck. "I'll just take a look around during my lunch," she decided. "Where do I start?"

Lori blinked and stepped back.

"Well, this is my office. Open door policy." He stepped into the hall then and gestured grandly over the half-cubicles. "My minions." The nearest Research team member waved to the intern. "That is the classroom, the door stays closed during classes." He pointed to the door, now open. "In the back is the coffee, the copying machine, and Seamus' things. Seamus is a great big cat and he doesn't like people in general. He may curse you to think he's cursed you. That's all he can do."

He looked back to Amari then.

"As for where you start, you can sit down and watch someone work, or I can run you through a couple of the programs."

Oh. Good to know stuff. Amari nodded, looking over his office and then following him out into the hall. She returned the wave. "He's a cat sidhe, then, isn't he?" She asked, curiously. "From Scotland?"

She hesitated again before looking up to Lori. "Could we do that?" She asked.

"Yeah. A fat one," Lori admitted. He sucked in his lips then and hs eyes went momentarily wide.

"Do... what?" Did she want him to set her up with someone else or sit down with her?

A fat cat sidhe. She couldn't say she'd ever seen one before to know the difference.

"Could you show me the programs?" She clarified.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 23, 2016 7:41 pm

"Sure. Grab a chair from the classroom and meet me in my office."

Being head honcho meant he did less of the tedious initial checks of photos, videos, and documents and more of the tedious final checks of Research folks' reports. He picked up the guff on hard days, of course, but this all meant he had the time to show the intern some things. Unfortunately.

"Alright, I'll be right back," Amari promised and headed for the classroom. She was back in a few moments with a chair. "Ready, Mister Yraudhen," she said, entering his office.

This kid was going to drive him insane. She was literally going to be the death of him.

"Okay. So text and audio is all up to the oldbies. You need to have heard and seen a lot of it to even begin guessing if the person is making s**t up. We do have a program we run visuals through, though. Only the computers in Research have it, only the Bureau has it at all, and I'm not talking the FBI. It searches for pixellation, unnatural blurs, missed frames, things like tha. If the public knew we could watch a video and figure out where they lived there's be a hot mess."

All while doing this he queued up a program marked only as "Seeker.exe" with no thumbnail. He blew air through his lips and started going through files he had already run.

"Fair warning, if anyone ever gets wind of us every document and file gets fried. Don't bring your home computer."

"I was told about that," Amari said, and smiled at Lori. "Can't blame the bureau for being so cautious," she added, thoughtfully. Not after what seemed to happen to so many entities. She looked to the computer screen. "So that program can tell between photoshopped and not," she said, nodding in understanding.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 23, 2016 8:37 pm

"Well, it tries to," Lori agreed. He nodded slightly from side to side. "It gives you its suspicions. People have the last say. You have to use the information you're given and decide for yourself. It's just a computer program after all." He pulled up Maia's video.

"A minute of video takes about ten minutes to process. Images take less than one."

He began to play the video. The program recognized it and ran it without waiting, complete with blue and yellow shapes at various points across the screen.

"Yellow is an area of suspicion. You can tell it what to focus on and it'll tell you if it thinks it's proper or not. For example, here." The seal's face against the beach. "The blue says it finds no errors." There was a lot of yellow, though, mostly in the sky and off toward what they now knew was Maia's house. It was only a cell phone video, after all.

"So...is the yellow because it's a poor quality video?" Amari guessed. She couldn't imagine someone had edited the sky or background--unless the entity had been a seperate video and cut and pasted into another. "A Selkie?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 23, 2016 8:50 pm

Literally. Literally the death of him. Lori showed his frustration in closing his eyes briefly.

Right. Training.

"Most of what we get is poor quality video. It's easier to edit something and cast a blurry filter over it or edit in some CGI when it's low-quality. Did you happen to see that 'mermaid' video that was going viral? The two little kids at the beach find a corpse that inexplicably roars at them. It was blatantly CGIed. If they didn't shoot it artistically, though, and had negated the quality of the video we might have spent more time on it. ...Maybe. ...Probably not." He shook his head quickly. "Anyway. The Seeker is finding inconsistencies. Some of it is due to the quality, but like I said, most of what we work with is low quality. It's programmed to try and see through it."

He ignored the comment about a selkie and brought up a low-quality image of a dark draconic shape flying in a blue sky, and another beside it, higher quality, of a creature in a dark forest screaming at the photographer. The first had circled the shape in blue. The second had the entire head circled in yellow, and bits of trees circled in blue.

"Real or fake?"

Oh. Maybe she was annoying him. Amari sucked in her bottom lip nervously. "I saw it," she admitted.

She studied the image before them. "Fake?" She guessed. "That one might be edited," she gestured to the one in yellow. "The one of the dragon..." She was silent for a long moment. "Real?"
