"I owe them... my protection..." gasped Faust. "If you take that from them..."
Dr. Wagner sighed and shook his head. "Unless you can protect them from yourself, Johannes, I doubt very much that your presence will be missed. Do you remember dear Manta, how much his quality of life was altered upon meeting you? Perhaps the same thing would have happened to Shizuka, if you had survived long enough to gain her trust."
"You're not real," Faust said weakly, no longer believing it, but trying all the same to convince himself that he could overcome his own demons.
As if reading his thoughts, Dr. Wagner said, "Don't worry. It's happened this way for almost five hundred years... I've plagued every Faust since the first was born to grace this unhappy world. I suppose it would do no harm to tell you my real name."
"I think I can guess.... Mephistophiles."
(meanwhile)
"Do you feel that?" Manta asked, feeling the furyoku prickling his skin like nuclear radiation. "I'm not even a shaman, but that's... that's a lot like the Spirit of Fire, just the overall aura..." He shivered. "You know, it's like Faust's furyoku just split. Because that's him, but scarier, if you know what I mean."

Shizuka nodded, almost frightened of this sudden change. She wanted to apologize for what she did. She wanted to be forgiven. She was the one who got Faust stuck in this in the first place, and she had to be the one to get him out of it. Too anxious to wait anymore, she hurried even more, leaving Naosuke behind in the dust.

Faust looked up just in time to see Shizuka burst into the clearing. He looked shaken and breathless, and there were red finger marks around his neck, but he was very alone and very calm. "Hello, Shizuka," he said quietly, smiling. "I was worried for you... is Manta nearby? I met the one that pursued us... he was no match for me, of course. It was such an easy fight." He laughed softly, and the sound was like razorblades slicing something alive.

Just like with Naosuke, Shizuka automatically senced lying under his breath. Her disposition expressed distrust yet sympathy.

Breathlessly, Manta stumbled up to Shizuka, clutching his chest and wheezing. "There... you are.... why'd you.... run off like that?" he gasped when he saw Faust. "What's going on? Were you in trouble?"
"None whatsoever," replied Faust silkily, stretching his arms as if he were just waking up. "There was a brief fight, but I think that the loser is gone now."
"Loser?" Manta asked, staring hard at Faust's neck. "Who did you fight? Was it someone connected with Hao?"
"No," said Faust vaguely. "It was someone... who was not as he seemed. I think his true self will become apparent, in time..." he trailed off. Taking a deep breath, he smiled eerily, saying, "Have you two ever noticed how invigorating night air is? You could get drunk on it, the sheer energy, the excitement... " Manta began visibly trembling. This reminded him of something he'd buried, and the memories were coming back.

Shizuka knew what was happening, or she at least had some sort of idea of what was going on. She positioned herself so she could reach the tonfas strapped to her back easilly if she needed to. Amaya, also noticing the change, prepared to enter an oversoul.

(mind if i join in? my character's name is netsubo, she has black hair n blue eyes...she likes ren....n her spirit ally is a ninja ghost named lataru who was friends n rivals with amidamaru biggrin ))

"I don't know what's up with you," Manta said warily, "but I don't like it. You're acting really weird..."
"How so?" Faust asked, his pale blue eyes glinting cruelly in the moonlight. "I've acted like this as far back as I remember. Or, at least, since I met you..." He took a step towards Manta, who scrambled backwards in terror.
Glancing at Shizuka's battle ready position, Faust smirked. "Do you really think you can fight me, little girl? I'm Faust VIII, and let me tell you that Necromancy is about as scary as the shaman arts get. But, I suppose you could be an interesting experiment..."
"DON'T do it," Manta said, grabbing Shizuka's sleeve. "We're going to turn and run... my god, he's regressed completely...."

"Scary doesn't always mean strong. You should know that by now." Amaya told him just before entering oversoul. Shizuka gave an apologetic look back to Manta, feeling somewhat guilty that she was fighting anyway despite his warnings. Her tonfas were held in a defensive position, ready for whatever attack was going to be thrown at her.

"Are either of you familiar with the Mesozoic era in Japan?" Faust asked unexpectedly; if he hadn't looked so threatening, his tone could have passed for a professor's. "Monsters so terrifying that their bones inspired stories of dragons and wyrms.... very similar to our European ones, actually. There are an amazing number of them sleeping within the soil beneath our very feet. I wonder what would happen if we woke them up?"
"Dinosaurs?" Manta asked. "No way... Faust, please tell me this is some elaborate joke." Faust's mana burned like radiation, and Manta felt like it was picking at his face and hands as he faced Faust head-on. "What's wrong with you?" he asked softly, moving closer to Shizuka, who at least seemed to know what she was doing. "Your furyoku doesn't even feel human."
Faust blinked. "Who said anything about being human?" he asked, eyes glinting. Suddenly, he sensed Shizuka's presence. "Come out, come out!" he called. "It's been a very long time since I've felt blood between my fingers... and as with all good things, too much is never enough."

Using his distraction as an oppurtunity, Shizuka sent a blast of firyoku towards him. She had a feeling that he was being posessed by Mephistophiles, the spirit that his great great great great grandfather allied with in the shaman fight 500 years ago (yes, Shizuka-chan did her homework). She didn't charge as much of her firyoku that she usually would into the attack because she simply intended to knock the evil spirit out, not kill Faust in the progress.
