Shiro nodded. "If you'd like, I can look for your parents," he offered. "They really should know about this."
"Do you know where they are?" Shoneah asked Shiro softly.
Shiro hesitated. "Well ... no ..."
"Then I will find them and let them know," Shoneah said firmly. "You, I know, cannot track."
Shiro couldn't argue that. "All right. Then I'll go see Kyrie and see if she has anything that might help him. It's going to take time regardless, but at least we can try make it easier on him."

Miyuki nodded, "I'll go get that flask of water then..."
It was the only thing she could do that the moment, other than perhaps think about what he could eat that would be okay. She honestly didn't know how these things work.

So the three went their separate ways: Miyuki for water, Shiro for Kyrie, and Shoneah for Lin and Earendil.
It didn't take her long to find the two: while she hadn't had any idea where they might have been, it wasn't for no reason that she had been chosen to become her tribe's next Grandmaster. She had no trouble tracking the two of them down.
They were not very close to the camp, but not terribly far away: just far enough that they would have some privacy to have some tea, a special and rare event for them.
Shoneah was unaware of any significance of the tea, but she still felt as if she were intruding as she approached them. Still, it wasn't as if it could be helped.
"Earendil? Lin?" she called out as she drew nearer the two.

It was rare that the two got this chance, and knowing it would be even rarer once they started traveling again, it was Lin who broke out the tea set and clothing. Just so she could do so.
Most people knew (though some instinctively) that this was a time for them to be left alone. So she was surprised to see Shoneah looking for them.
"Sliverbirch," Lin looked up from the tea she was pouring, "Did you need of us?"

Earendil had his back to Shoneah, so he neither heard nor saw her approach, but when Lin addressed her, he turned to look.
Shoneah nodded, aware that she was interrupting.
"I am sorry to bother you," she said softly, "but Shiro said that you should know ... Andarien is unwell. Fevered. Shiro says he will be all right in a few days, but ... he said that you should know anyways."
"Fevered?" Earendil repeated, surprised. "What from?"

Lin frowned and thought about it. While not a lot of people in her family got sick (at least in her recent memory) she was familiar with the concept. YanYu had gotten sick once, and Quintin and Raven often caught something during the winter season. Kin, because of his dog demon blood often came out unscathed.
"Well... the weather has been changing a lot, and while Andarien has gone through several seasons over the years without getting sick, I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that he does...." she mused.
Anderian also tended to get caught up in his work, so he didn't look after himself as well as he should. He wasn't as bad as Shiro, it was amazing Shiro had never gotten sick before.

Earendil looked at Lin worriedly. "Why wouldn't it be surprising?" he asked her. "Fever means infection, that's something to worry about."
Shoneah kept quiet. She didn't understand it herself, so what could she offer? And she didn't know if it was a Gaian thing, even if Shiro did say so, because her people didn't become sick like Andarien was. And yet she couldn't say it was an elvish thing not to get sick - because Andarien was very much an elf, and yet he was sick.
So she really just had no idea.

Lin tilted her head curiously and then recalled elves didn't normally get sick. She supposed it would take something as bad as an infection (from the result of a wound no doubt) in order to become ill.
"He probably has the flu," she paused, "I think that's how Raven put it. Colds will just make you feel miserable, but if you have the fever it's likely the flu."
People tended to use the terms interchangeably, but it was Raven who cleared it up for Lin.
"My family has been relatively healthy and free from the seasonal sicknesses, but it's actually not uncommon for certain to become ill when the weather gets colder. There are, actually a lot of diseases that certain races can get, not because they have a wound that got infected but rather a disease that jumps from one person to the next, or because where they live isn't as sanitary as it should be."
She scratched her cheek thoughtfully.
"Yukito once told me it's because the weather gets colder and people tend to stay indoors more putting them in close contact with each other. Though I've also heard not looking after yourself, such as not sleeping enough, or not eating regularly can open yourself up to get sick easier... something about the immune system but that's a topic Shiro is better at than myself."

Earendil wasn't sure what to make of all that, and he was about to open his mouth and ask a question when Shoneah asked, amazed, "Something like this can be caused by lack of sleep?"
Earendil blinked and looked at her. He couldn't put his finger on it, but something about her gave him the feeling that she looked guilty.
"You know something about it?" he asked her, trying not to sound accusatory.
Shoneah blushed. "Well ... I asked Cael to put a sound barrier on the forge at night, and Andarien has been joining me lately ..."

"Not directly, but yes it can..." Lin paused a bit because part of that was Andarien's choice after all.
She thought about what Yukito had told her. Lin herself, had a tendency to over work and going to the Four Lands for language lessons certainly messed with her own sleeping habits. Her brother sat her down when she started school for socializing in order to make sure she understood the importance of not over working herself.
"How did my brother put it? All living beings, have the ability to fight off disease... admittedly, some races do it better than others, but things like lack of sleep can make it harder for our bodies to keep illness away. It doesn't mean you'll get sick right away, it just means you're more likely to get sick. In all honesty, it's probably a combination of that and the fact that those of us that can have pretty much forgotten we can become ill on occasion. The combination of traveling constantly, and probably being among people who don't normally get ill has kept the rest of us pretty healthy."

Shoneah nodded slowly. She was glad that they weren't blaming her for their son becoming ill.
"I see," she murmured. "Well, anyways, Shiro said that you should know. He's gone to Kyrie to see if she has anything that can help him, and Miyuki's getting water for him, so I offered to come tell you."

"We probably should head back," Lin murmured, "I know through friends you can feel pretty miserable while sick. Though he's probably sleeping by now..."
She paused and looked thoughtful.
"I wonder if we could make soup, but that would take a lot of fire time... I heard soup is the best, because you get both liquids and nutrient from that."

Earendil was disappointed that they would have to cut their outing short, but he knew there really wasn't any other option.
"Well, if Andarien's asleep, then maybe by the time he wakes up the soup will be ready," he pointed out. "Whichever way, we should check on him."
He moved to start helping Lin clean up the tea, and Shoneah hung back, not quite sure what to do.
"He's in his room," she said finally. "I'll head back, then."
And she turned and slipped back into the trees and was gone.

Once Shoneah was gone, Lin worked to pour what was left of the tea out (it wouldn't hurt the plants and the leaves would be good compose). She would clean the set later when there was time.
"I wonder if he just felt the symptoms today, or if it's been like that for a while," Lin mused after everything was packed up, "I've never talked to the children about being healthy, and Andarien... he tends to not say when he's being bothered until he's really bothered by something..."

"I find he tends to keep to himself, period," Earendil replied, reaching for the bag so that he could carry it back for Lin. "I know he used to be very clingy and we wanted him to be independent, but maybe we should spend a bit more time with him, remind him that he should share more with us."
Really, how much did they even really talk to their own son anymore? Not a whole lot.
