"It looks good," Maia said, looking at the pizza. She kissed his cheek as Toby cut the pizza. Maybe the storm would be over by the time they finished dinner.
There was a great gust, and then a faint sound as the power went out. For several moments, Maia simply stood there, stiff. She wrapped her arms around Toby.

"Space travel? Nah. On your next day off, do you think I can visit your headquarters?"

Toby only paused for a moment when the power went out, and then wrapped his arms around Maia and kissed her head.
"I'm going to go get some lights. Do you want to stay here?"

"So soon?" Dari asked, "There are going to be people there you think you're afraid of, you know..." He didn't want to do this too early and earn scorn and a panicked boyfriend.

Lights were probably a good idea. Maia hugged him and released him. "Yeah," she said, "I'll go check Peaches."

"I'll be fine," Cody promised, kissing Dari's cheek. "Just warn me before I meet a ghost."

Toby smiled and nodded. He kissed Maia's temple and headed out of the kitchen. There was a loud double-thump.
"Found him!"
Toby continued to retrieve the candles, lamps and flashlights. He could see just fine in the dark but he knew Maia preferred the light.
Peaches meowed and walked into the kitchen.

"Do you really want me to?" Dari asked, "He's indistinguishable from a living person as long as he's not being a jerk, and I've already spoken to him."

Found him? It sounded as if Toby had almost tripped over him! When Peaches came into the kitchen, she bent to scoop him up. "Hi kitty," she greeted. "Did that surprise you?"

"Is he? Well, alright. I'll be okay, love. I want to see where you work." Cody brushed his hand against Dari's cheek.

Peaches began to purr and reached up to bat at some of Maia's hair.

"Okay, if you're sure," Dari replied with a smile. Good! This was faster than he had thought that Cody would be ready. "You still get to meet the dragon, too."

Maia scratched at Peaches' head and behind the ears. "So happy," she said. "Did you make daddy trip?"

"Oh good. I've been looking forward to that," Cody said, and smiled at Dari. "Maia told me he likes fruit."

But look, Mom! I am so purry! (I didn't do it on purpose!)
Toby returned with a candle and lit it in the kitchen. He didn't imagine they'd be spending a lot of time there. A lamp went in the living room, and another in the bathroom, then up into their bedroom. He returned to the kitchen to get Maia and offered her a flashlight, smiling.

"He does. I think you'll like him," Dari said. "He's a little special."

Maia took the flashlight and leaned to kiss Toby's cheek. "Peaches says he's sorry," she said, offering the cat to Toby. "Ready to eat?"

"I'm sure he is," Toby replied. He scratched Peaches between the ears and earned a squint. "Yup! I'll grab some plates and meet you there."

"Well he can't physically write. He doesn't have thumbs." Dari smiled and nodded. "He can spell, though, yes. He has a custom pad. It's cute. It looks like he's dancing."

Maia smiled and headed out into the living room. She set Peaches down on the couch.

Oh, right. Cats didn't have thumbs. Cody smirked. "Well, a spelling cat is just as good," he said. "I'd like to meet him, too."

Peaches jumped down and did circles around Maia's ankles. Toby came in then with plates of pizza and offered one to Maia.

"He doesn't spell well but he has the ability to 'sound out' new words. It's pretty impressive," Dari said. "Don't be offended if he doesn't like you at first. He's a bit of a diva."

"Of course." He kissed the corner of her lips and finally was able to put his headphones on.
"It'll last as long as it takes the movie to play. Streaming doesn't take a lot of power."
