I used windows defender for cleaning up start up stuff. Basically switched off anything that didn't come with my comp.

one main problem with that idea Bren, I can not download anything onto that computer at the moment... it freezes before I even get firefox to load my home page

Hmm that would be a problem. Think there's a way to do it through the registry with command or some such that could probably be done through safe mode. Not sure though.

Yeah... it gets a little tricky knowing what's supposed to run and what's not supposed to. The other thing is, if it's software, the best policy can be to just back up what you can, make sure you have discs and product keys for all your important programs, and just reformat the thing. :
The other possibility is that if you want to try to get programs onto it without formatting it (antivirus, etc.) you could try to burn the data to a CD or to a flash drive and just copy it over... but if it locks up that quickly... hmm.
Formatting is the only option that springs to mind right now as a guaranteed solution. D: At any rate, I gotta run for work; you can always PM me if you have any more questions, too.

I can't run a system restor either... it is like the stupid Next >> button is turned off on the second step
how do I format? sweatdrop *knows how to format a disk, but is not sure how to format an entire computer* I am not really worried about my programs, they are all on my removable hard drive, and it still works just fine when I tried connecting it to the laptop yesterday

Did you get disks with the computer? If so, one of them should be a system restore disk or just a straight up windows CD. You're gonna wanna restart it with that in the drive and have it boot from CD. From there, it should take you through the steps for wiping your computer and starting with a fresh copy of Windows.

I couldn't figure out Dorf Fortress, it was too much for me, so I returned to pointlessly leveling up Aeris' limit breaks. What a waste.

I know, it's disappointing, no matter how many times I play this game, I really secretly hope she won't die. ********, now I'm gonna have to make Barrett my healing b***h. Ugh.

See, I never much healed in that game for some reason. I managed to get by slaughtering things mercilessly and using items to heal between battles.
I also was apparently the only person not to like Aeris much for some reason.
