The fortress is being overrun by Dark Gnomes.
No casualties yet.
Update: Nobody died. Once Kobolds started sending thieves I leashed a wardog to the fortress entrance. And it ate one of the gnomes. The rest ran off.
My Dwarf became a legendary clerk since she's been desk bound for months doing paperwork.
Fish keeps throwing parties in the grand dining hall.

First thing you need to know d -> j : dig downward stairs > : go down a level d -> u : dig connecting upward stairs
You won't be able to get anywhere without knowing how to dig downward. If you're also going to specify an area for regular mining leading off of the upward stairs, be careful not to actually overwrite the stairs with regular mining before they've been dug out.

Even the light basics manual is heavy. Such is the life of a Dorf. If only I had a non-laptop keyboard I might try again.
Also: Heck yes I keep throwing parties. You'd all better be coming to them.

Dwarf manager is incompatible with whatever version I'm playing, so I have to manually change the settings on all 12 new migrants.
I hate this part.

I've always just done it manually. Pause and deal with that until they're all assigned.

I'm gonna try and make it through the in-game manual 'fore I do anything. And then start building a basic fortress. Very likely I'll just have a bloody hole.

The hard part is keeping track of who's assigned to what. They show up as dyers and cheesemakers, and I can't remember if the cheesemaker is assigned to farm or if the dyer is supposed to be hunting.
