Because the r is pronounced that way in Japanese, apparently. It's technically not an 'r' or an 'l' sound, but that's the closest to it we can get with English. It's almost a mix between the two, a sort of half rolled 'r'. You know, like in Spanish, they tend to add that trill to the 'r'? It's just smaller than that. *confused* Yeah...
