"Want to play video games? I bet Dari and I can beat you!" Kevin grinned at Toby. "Do you still suck at video games?"

Dari shook his head. "Yes, Kevin. We can beat him. He still runs into oncoming fire."

"I hope you don't do that in real life," Kevin looked to Toby sternly. "You're not allowed to get hurt!"
"Dari I think we need to teach him to play better," he said.

"I've been shot before," Toby said with a shrug, "It doesn't always go as badly as that last time."
"Come on," Dari said, quickly changing the subject, "Let's see if we even can. I have three controllers."

Kevin narrowed his eyes. He seemed to ignore Toby otherwise though. He stood and went to the living room to find the game system.
"I'm choosing the game!" He called.

"Oh, come on. It's not like I try to get shot!" Toby said, arms up. Dari just shook his head, shrugged at him, and followed Kevin.
"If Kevin's picking, you might not want to watch us, Maia," Dari said after a moment of thought. Whether or not she knew about the darker titles in his extensive collection he wasn't sure.

Maia gave Dari a grateful smile. "I was thinking I'd leave you boys to it," she said, and she went to Toby's side. She kissed his cheek. "Goodnight love," she said.
"Hey! Let's play the paintbrush game!"

Toby turned, cupped Maia's cheek, and kissed her soundly. "Good night. I'll be up later." He followed after Dari then.
Dari smiled as he helped Kevin get the game together. "I'm surprised you like this one so much," he offered. For many reasons, of course, including 'I like it when they die.' He was glad the boy's interests had shifted to include more than violent games.
"Oh, this is rough on three players," Toby added, "Maybe I'll just watch the first round."

"This game is the best game ever," Kevin informed Dari, smiling at the alien. "I like when I can beat them. Sometimes they cheat, though." He looked to Toby. "We're going to teach you how to be good at games," he said.

"The games cheat?" Dari asked, and then amended: "Actually, I suppose they know where you are at all times, and we don't have that luxury." He popped the game in and plucked up the newly-charged controllers and brought them to the couch.
"Okay," Toby said, "Have at it."

"They do," Kevin said, nodding seriously. He took his controller and waited for the game to start up. "And they always have the best attacks," he added. "You can't get what they have at level six, completely unfair!" He shook his head.

Dari was much higher than a level 6, but he wasn't about to tell Kevin that. Instead he chose his own character quickly and let Kevin start up his and the round began. Unfortunately there was no campaign mode for two players. The bosses would be rendered ineffective, or at least that was what Dari considered might be the reason.
"I like when they turn into squid," Toby commented offhandedly. Dari leaped in and out of a puddle of paint for Toby's benefit. Toby smiled.

Kevin chose his character and grinned. "I like the big paintbrush," he said. "You cover a lot of space with it. Or the roller." He switched between his weapons to check which ones he had. He looked to Toby and smiled. "I like going up the walls as a squid!"

"You can go up the walls?" Toby asked, although he had seen Dari and Maia play both multiplayer and campaign several times. "Oh yeah! Huh! Is the big paint brush slower or something?" He figured there had to be a downside to using something that covered so much area.
