Toby imagined that this desire to stay home might change with age, but that wasn't something to bring up now. Kevin was clearly happy with life at this point and he didn't want to upset him in any way.
"Of course you can stay nearby. There's all kinds of different types of schools you can go to."

"What kind of school do I need to go to get a job here?" Kevin asked. "Any school counts?" He took Toby's plate, once he was finished, and set it aside. "I want to do things to help people. Do you think we'll ever find another kelpie like me we can help?"

"Any university, so not community college, but any college that can get you a bachelor's degree." He murmured a 'thank you' when Kevin took his plate and nodded. "I hope so. I have to say, you're the most agreeable one we've met."

Kevin nodded. So any degree? Hm... Well! He had time to think about that, didn't he? He hadn't started highschool yet, even! "Maybe because you found me still new," he mused. "I'm glad you did. I was lonely."

"Maybe," Toby said, but secretly had to wonder if that was all it was. The fact that Kevin had been lonely at all said that he was different from the other kelpies in some way. They didn't usually give a damn about human contact except to eat. Kevin's ego might get in the way, though, so he chose to keep this fact to himself.
"Alright, I have to get back to work. Do you want me to come grab you after, or do you want to meet me?"

"I'll come meet you. You'll stay at your office?" Kevin was disappointed Toby's lunch was so short! He would've liked a longer visit. "See you later, Toby!"

"Yeah, I'll be there," he said with a smile and a nod, "I'll see ya!" He got up and left with a wave, heading back to work with a smile on his face.

Kevin had packed a small bag with an extra set of clothes and a pair of pajamas. Deciding he was ready, he left his room and locked the door. He hurried to Toby's office. "Toby! Are you ready to go?"

Toby had been lounging in his chair, his feet up on the trash can, when Kevin arrived. He smiled to the boy and nodded. "Yup. Just waiting for you."
He and Dari got up simultaneously, but he let the alien go first.
"What are you thinking for dinner tonight?" Toby asked Kevin.

Kevin smiled. He went into the office and hugged Toby when the man stood. "Can we make something? Anything besides pizza sounds good."!

"You're still not eating pizza, huh?" Toby teased, "Well, we can hit the grocery store on the way home. Think about what you might want." He returned the hug and headed out of the office, locking the door as he went.

"No, bleh!" Kevin made a face, wrinkling his nose. "Okay. What's your favorite thing to make? Can we make that?" Kevin followed Toby out.

"He makes cake when he's stressed," Dari piped up from behind them. When they reached the car, he slid into the back seat before anyone could say otherwise.
"Well we don't need cake. Let me think about it," Toby replied.

"I didn't say 'no cake,' I said we don't need cake," Toby corrected as he started away. "Whatever you want. We could play video games, watch a movie, play board games, have a tea party, whatever floats your boat, Kevin."
Dari laughed slightly in the back.
