I love how my fumble went from going around Aurunak magically and hitting my own teamate to "Oh, then it detonates in your face instead."
I also love how on his fumble he had a 75% chance of hitting one of us anyways with no chance to evade it.
If that's the case, I should get surrounded and fumble constantly.

Except that he mistakenly made an attack roll against himself when he fumbled also. Perhaps if he'd have fumbled the fumble it would have had a 125% chance of hitting one of us.

No, we did some test battle thing.
Ryugi was using a homebrew fumble method he made up off the top of his head.
I'm seriously sending him some charts the next time I see him.

Well in that case, I would like to suggest an alternative.
Every time you roll a 1, half the party dies.

Our party would have been reduced to 1/24th of a Tarak by the end of the second fight in that case.
As it was, I was reduced to -6 HP and successfully made my roll to stay on my feet one round more. By the end of that one round more I'd acquired 5 temp HP from an orc ability and 24 HP via bolstered healing surges.
And I guess it's the DM's call, but my effects on fumbles were always to go flat footed, drop something, or deal minor damage (like a 1 to a d4) to self or adjacent ally. It was when people started playing with fire and shiny magic that fumbles started ending up in flaming wizards sprinting away from the party toward the lake with another monster in it, or blowing up a structural support and...
...well, you all know the rest.
