"Really? You hate Lori's last name, but 'Cnidaria' doesn't bother you?" Toby laughed slightly.
"Hey. I wanted to talk to you about something too."

"I don't like his full name," Kevin clarified and smiled at Toby. It faded slightly, and he looked up from the stovetop. "Am I in trouble?"

Toby grinned, then shook his head vigorously.
"No, no! It's just something I wanted to discuss with you. See, when younger entities graduate and head out into humanity they need someone to put down on paper as their guardian. You know, to go to parent-teacher meetings and sign off on field trips and things. I was wondering if you'd like me to offer to be yours."

What? Kevin stared, looking up and away from the sandwich he was cooking. "So you'd be like my dad?" He asked. "I'd like that."

Toby gave a thoughtful frown and nodded. "Yeah, sort of." He smiled then. "You would? Alright. I can get it in the works, then. I wanted to make sure with you before I did anything." Secretly he was rather pleased.

Kevin looked to the sandwich and turned it with his spatula before looking up again. "So...what do we do, now that you're kind of my dad?" He asked. "I've never had one before."

"I don't know, probably not much different than now, right? You'll come over, we'll go places, things like that." Would Kevin want to go to their New England retreat this year? "Oh, and you're invited over for a celebratory sleepover if you want to come."

Alright, not as much a change as he'd thought. Kevin paused and thought for a bit before taking the prepared sandwich and sliding it onto a plate. He offered it to Toby. "I want to come!" He said. "I get to see you more often than ever now?"

"Well yeah, probably," Toby said with a chuckle. He took the plate and just stood back, waiting for Kevin to make his own.
"We don't have a guest room, but Dari wouldn't mind sharing." Especially when he didn't have to sleep.

Kevin started making a second sandwich. "I like seeing you more," he said. "You're my favorite person." He paused. "Can I sleep in the living room? I don't mind the couch."

"Oh, yeah. If that's what you really want you can.We just have a bed up on offer if you want it. After all, you're the one with the spine," Toby teased. He decided to not remark on the "favorite person" comment and embarrass the boy, but he was definitely smiling.

"But it's Dari's bed," Kevin said. He still wasn't sure he believed Dari didn't need any sleep. He smiled at Toby, and finished with his sandwich. He set it on a plate. "What was school like for you?" He asked. "Is it hard?"

Toby took the first bite of his sandwich then and shrugged.
"I was kind of a punk for a while in middle school and high school, but I got over that fast," he said. "To be honest, the hard part's the people, not the school. You'll do fine, though, and your dad could definitely take out their dad." He smiled. "There'll be at least one entity ally at the school for you to go to, though. They'll be trained a bit, given information and a direct line to us, all of that stuff."

"I don't really get along with other people," Kevin admitted. "It's easy to get along with you, though..." He looked thoughtful. "I'll try." He took a bite of his sandwich. "I'll make sure I tell them that. My dad's an awesome...cop? You have a cop face."

Toby shrugged. "I was always a people person. It doesn't matter, though. It's only something like 6 hours a day, and most of the time you're expected to shut up and listen anyway." He smiled then.
"Just tell them I 'work for the government.' They'll know exactly what you mean, because there's this whole expectation that federal agents can't say what they do, and it's technically true. Don't say 'federal agent,' though. Nobody'll believe you." As long as Kevin didn't turn into a bully, he'd be fine.
