Right on. My favourites are recipes that are adapted from things that characters actually eat or drink in their respective book/movie/video game/etc.

Sadly enough, I've never heard of a successful butterbeer recipe... even though I can imagine what it should taste like.

I have had a few successful butterbeers, but none that really matched what I envisioned.

I just don't think it's supposed to taste like butterscotch, let alone cream soda. I don't think it's supposed to be sugary at all. It should be buttery, and maybe a little salty. Mind you, I'm used to butter tea, so...

When asked about its flavor by Bon Appetit, Rowling said, "I made it up. I imagine it to taste a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch."

So I think that the recipes with actual butterscotch (ton of scorched butter with brown sugar blended in), possibly with cream, vanilla, and/or salt. It's definitely alcoholic as there was question as to what Ron and hermione would get up to whilst inebriated and house elves got plastered outright on the stuff.

If I was to try to make my own recipe, I think it would be similar to buttered beer: ale, ground ginger, ground clove, ground nutmeg, butterscotch (butter, brown sugar, and heavy cream), and egg yolks. I might try it with champagne for extra froth and a subtler flavor.

I agree with you that it should not be sugary though, just a "sweet cream" butter overtone.

@Exxos - I would love to try your recipe of butterbeer. That does sound exactly right.
