"I have no idea," Earendil admitted. "I've never seen anyone hug him before, so I don't know if it was because he was tired or if he just doesn't like them. The only way you'll find out, though, is if you try again."
Yes, he was suggesting that she do just that - because he had his uncle Eldrin's habit of enjoying seeing people in uncomfortable situations.
His mother said he spent too much time with Eldrin. Maybe she was right, but it couldn't be helped: he was, after all, Earendil's trainer.

"Well... I don't normally give a lot of hugs to strangers," Lin replied thoughtfully, "But he's not really a stranger anymore and he's really nice..."
She would say that for someone who was taken up the mountain like that.
"Okay! Let's hug him when he's better."

"I'll let you do the hugging," Earendil told Lin with a grin. "I'm too big to hug him."
Unless there was an extremely important occasion that called for a hug, it was generally not done between grown men (which the young prince considered himself to be).

"You are? But Yukito hugs everyone.... except Daddy.... only Mommy and other siblings can hug Daddy."
Though that made sense.. .Daddy woudl look funny if Yuki hugged him.

"Perhaps things are different for angels," Earendil shrugged, trying to remember what Yukito had looked like. "But here, hugs are only for direct family members and those in a courting or married relationship. You're small enough, young enough, to get away with hugging people ... I, on the other hand, am not."
Not only would he freak some people out, but he would also basically be getting himself shunned by most.

Lin thought that was silly, but what could she do? That sounded like an adult rule, though not an adult rule she had ever heard of... Feng would not like that rule at all she finally decided.
"Direct family?" she didn't understand that, wasn't he Elrohir's nephew? "You're family."

"Parents or siblings," Earendil replied immediately. "That kind of direct. Uncle is extended family."
He moved her to his other arm, shifting his load to make the trek a bit easier for himself. The base of the mountain path was still so far away ...

Lin thought about it, but that meant she couldn't hug any of Elnara's children.. or she couldn't get hugs from them, or she couldn't get hugs from grandparents (if she had them... did she have them?).
"I don't like that," she finally decided.

"Well, like I said," Earendil shrugged, "you're little enough that you can get away with it. Besides, it's probably different in your world -- Valar know, enough else is. So it might be okay for you, even if it's not for us, here."

Lin giggled at that, "That's good," she smiled.
She hoped just that Elrohir would be in a better mood by then.
"So lessons after lunch?"

"Indeed!" Earendil grinned. "Are you going to join me again today?"
She was a bit of a distraction during his lessons, both for him and for Sir Valdemar, but neither of them minded. They knew that once she was gone, their lessons would be as boring for each of them as they had ever been.

"Yea!" Lin replied, "I'm going to practice my numbers..."
Granted she could only get up to nineteen and everything after that was kind of if-y. When she meant to practice she meant her characters.
"And then maybe the zodiac."

"You're going to have to tell me about that sometime," Earendil said thoughtfully. "Because it does sound interesting ..."
He had heard something about it before, but no details.

Lin nodded happily, "That would be fun, what are you going to do today in class?"
Since she hadn't gotten to the point yet where classes were boring.

"If you want," Earendil offered, "I can ask Sir Valdemar if we can talk about one of the wars. It's history today, after all."
And it seemed like a topic Lin might enjoy.
