Melanie looked up in time to notice a look on Storm's face that she couldn't quite decipher. "Well, is it a possibility to just avoid him, or is that not an option?"

Storm shrugged.
"In theory, yes. In practice...I have rarely had that pleasure. Maybe this time will be different. Who knows? Maybe you're an Albatross in disguise."
She smiled lightening quick before it disappeared again.

Melanie pushed herself up and crossed her arms over her chest, as her head tilted to the side slighty. "Beg pardon?"

Storm looked moderated surprised.
"An Albatross. You've never read that poem before?"
She smiled slowly.
"I won't get into the intricacies of it, but basically it is a creature of great beauty that brings good luck to whatever ship she lives in. But like all good things, even this beauty must end at some time. And when she does die, or moves on, whatever, her absence brings unending foul luck to the ship."

Melanie took a step back from the railing and shoved her hands into her pockets, a look of uncertainty on her face. Could she trust Storm if her and her entire crew thought of her as an....Albatross? She couldn't tell....at least, not yet she couldn't....but hopefully nothing bad would happen.
"In the poem.....how does this Albatross die...?"

"Oh that."
Storm shrugged and turned towards the waves watching the spot of life far off approach slowly.
"A member of the captain's crew kill the creature when she refuses to make love to him. See, he didn't pay attention to the legends surrounding her, so assumed nothing ill would come of it. He was wrong."

Melanie's eyebrows rose and her mouth dropped open slightly at the...outcome of the poem. "Well that's just great!" She threw her hands above her head in a sign of exasperation, then turned around and sat down, not minding the grimy deck. "I should've never boarded this bloody ship." She muttered under her breath as she bended her knees, then rested her arms on them.

Storm grinned widely.
“That’s what I said, dear, on my own first ship. But look at me now! A veritable lord of the pirate community, with a sheer fleet of ships at my very beck and call. Great things are in store for you, Mel; I can tell. And I’m pretty certain no one’s going to try and kill you.”
Storm shrugged.

"Well, I certainly hope not!" Mel leaned her head back and closed her eyes, feeling the beginnings of a headache coming on. "So, when are we to go to port?"

"In the morning; we're sleeping on the ship again tonight. No wenches for you just yet, I'm afraid."
Storm winked.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have some...captain-y things to do, else where."

Melanie opened her eyes only to glare at Storm. "Not what I meant!" Then she stood up and climbed up on the railing, quickly grabbing onto the rope ladder before falling over board. About ten minutes later, Melanie was sitting in the crow's nest and was falling asleep to the sound of one of the crew members humming 'a pirates life for me'.

[Sorry it took so long; got called away on Mommy Details for the past few days. XP]
Storm only laughed as Melanie protested. She trailed off to go find Stilgar and give him orders which he relayed selectively. It was coming on the early morning as Wind pulled into the outer part of the dock. Storm yawned and retired to her cabin; she nearly tripped over Melanie as she lay on the floor on the outer part of the cabin.
"Dammit girl. What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you laying in the middle of the floor?"

Melanie could hear the ship moving somewhere and thought that she should get up and help. Melanie shut her eyes tighter and switched positions in an effort to resist waking up. Unfortunately, the jab of a boot in her side made resistance quite futile, and without further resistance she woke up to hear the captain scolding her. "Well excuse me." Melanie said sarcastically as she poked her side and winced. Yeah, that'll turn into a bruise. She sat up and rested her elbows on her knees, "Pardon me for sleeping on the only part of the ship that's airy and comfortable."

Storm's anger dissipated and she sighed.
"It's airy, but not that comfortable. Look, just for now, why don't you sleep with me tonight? At least then you won't be in the middle of the floor. It's comfortable, warm, and I promise I won't bite."

"You...bite...?" Melanie rolled her eyes and waved her hand. "No! You'll just de-skin me is all." She smiled, hoping Storm would see that she was just poking fun.
