By the time she did catch up with him she was perfectly out of breath, which made her rethink exactly how fit she was. Lin had prided herself on being able to keep up when she needed to, but she had never been pushed this way before. Nevermind the fact it did take a while before she caught up to him.

As she was trying to bring more oxygen into her bloodstream she stared at the large stag before her. It actually didn't bother her as much as it should have she thought that it was dead, but it was going to end up dinner, and she was use to seeing dinner once alive. Look at the fish her family ate sometimes, or the crab, or the.... well other things like that.

"How are you going to carry it?"

It was probably a question she was going to see the answer to anyhow.

"With difficulty," the hunter admitted in a grunt, glancing back at Lin. "But you can help me if you'd like. I can't carry the buck and my bow at the same time, not easily. Would you mind terribly carrying my bow back for me?"

And he held his bow out to her, wondering at the same time how she would even carry it. It was easily twice her height after all, though it weighed next to nothing.

"I don't mind," Lin replied.

She would love to help, besides she had a feeling that, that animal was going to take two hands and a back to carry it. Though as she took the bow she realized that the thing was larger than her. Now the question was, how to carry it without having it drag on the ground. She could hold it in both hands up, but she would be worried about her whacking into something. After a moment of thought, she put the width under her arm so the length would run into any trees, unless she turned, which hopefully there wouldn't be a forest when it came to that.

While Lin was trying to find a way to safely carry the bow, Gwaethir knelt next to the buck. He tugged his cloak forward a bit so that it wouldn't choke him, then edged his hands beneath the enormous beast's belly. His muscles bulged and tightened as he strained to lift it from the ground, ducking his head carefully beneath it so that he could sling it across his shoulders.

He climbed slowly, carefully, to his feet, his face showing the strain of the weight on his shoulders.

"Follow me," he said crisply, starting off through the trees once more, knees bent with his load.

Lin hurried after Gwaethir, even though he wasn't going anywhere near as fast as he had been before, she didn't want to slow him down at all. Not when he was carrying something that heavy. She was sort of in awe, after all that was one very heavy buck.

For a long time, Gwaethir walked in silence, focusing all of his energy on carrying the buck through the trees without knocking it against anything (which just might knock him over). He kept glancing backwards to keep an eye on Lin - just in case something happened, since if he didn't catch it right away he wouldn't be able to react quickly enough - and though he was used to silence, there was a question growing in the back of his mind, one that he couldn't help but ask.

"Is this your first real hunt?" he grunted over his shoulder at Lin, keeping his pace steady.

So even he got curious sometimes, she filed that away for later. Though if she really had thought about it, she would have realized she was a bit of an oddity (even though she wouldn't think so).

"Yes," she replied, "I've never asked before, and back home we live close to the city."

Which she figured would explain it, city people didn't actually need to hunt. Though it made her wonder what her mother did when she travelled, she couldn't see her mother hunting. Her Mommy probably went a veggie diet while travelling or fishing, there was always fishing.

Gwaethir nodded as well as he could with the enormous weight behind his head and grew silent once more as they continued on their way. Of course, he was in full realizatin of the fact that she hadn't technically asked to accompany him this time either - she had told the large cat that she was going to, which was a completely different matter.

Still, it was only a technicality, and he didn't particularly care. As long as he wasn't accused of taking her places she shouldn't have been (which he probably had) or showing her things that she probably shouldn't have seen (which, again, he probably had).

On the whole, he was rather impressed with her - she'd remained as silent as he knew she could, speaking only when necessary, and when first spoken to, and she had done a fair job keeping up with him - and he had expected her to take quite a bit longer, catching up with him after he had take off like that.

Yes, he was rather impressed indeed.

But he showed it by keeping silent, rather than congratulating her. By treating her almost as an equal, instead of the child that she was.

There was something... that she couldn't quite put her finger on, unlike someone say Aragost whom she could simply ask, she knew very well she wasn't going to get a straight answer if at all. (At least Aragost would answer questions within reason).

So, when trying to figure Gwaethir out, she couldn't quite figure it out. However, it didn't work so well to simply ask the man. she wondered.... if that meant she would have to 'hunt' her own answers, for observation was the only way she could figure she would learn anything.

Granted, she hadn't learned much, except... he didn't talk a lot, he was a very fast runner and he was very strong. Well there was also that thing about letting her come along, she really never knew how he felt about that.

At long last, they made it back to the ranch, and ithout speaking to Lin, Gwaethir made his way in the direction of the smoke house, just to the south of the main house. He knew - or rather, was certain - that she would follow him there, since she did after all still have his bow, and so he again said nothing.

As they headed past the house, one of the fighters passed them by - one of the younger men who was usually on night duty instead of day duty.

"Need a hand?" he offered to Gwaethir, seeing the size of the buck compared to the hunter's short stature.

"No," Gwaethir replied flatly, continuing on.

The fighter shook his head and went on his way, heading towards the barracks.

Curious, Lin thought that he didn't want help, then again she didn't doubt he could carry the thing. She just watched him carry the heavy creature all the way here and she was pretty sure it wasn't any slower on the way back.

"How did you know the stag was there?" Lin finally asked.

She had watched, but she had not fully understood, and she had thought about it enough to understand she didn't really understand at all. It had to do something with looking at the ground for tracks (probably) and that brown stuff. Otherwise, she didn't know how he could piece it together.
PostPosted: Fri May 02, 2008 8:52 pm

"Tracks," the hunter replied, his tone far less gruff than it had been only the moment before. "Scat. Diet. The area. Instincts. Smell. Taste. Sound. A lifetime of experience."

As he approached the smoke house, he heaved the buck from his shoulders, dumping it heavily on the ground, then turned and looked at Lin. There was a large bloody stain on the shoulder of his cloak from the buk's wound, but he paid it no mind.

"Nothing that can't be learned."

She heard that word before... scat, she thought it was a polite word for poo. Suddenly she realized what the brown stuff was... ew. Yea, that didn't sound plesant, but there was that saying you are what you eat.

Though she wasn't sure about the rest of it, that would probably take a bit more learning. Somehow, at least she knew she could probably learn it, if given time.

She smiled, "Okay."

Gwaethir nodded, and a hint of a smile played about his lips for the first time in many a long year. Despite the gruffness that stayed in his eyes, the smile softened his entire face, an almost miraculous effect that actually made him look somewhat friendly for once.

"Thank you for your help today, Lin," he said crisply, kneeling and reaching one hand out for his bow. "But what I am about to do ... I think your mother would not approve if you watched. I am not going to send you away, however: I will leave it to your discretion. You are obviously old enough to make your own decisions."

She wondered what that could be, but it must be something what adults would call 'traumuzing' if her mother wouldn't approve. Since she knew it couldn't be swearing, since there was no point to it at the moment and nothing bad.

It kind of reminded her when he sent her ahead after he caught that rabbit. It must have been like the rabbit thing in a way she thought as she handed him back his bow.

"I think, I'll go, I don't want to worry Mommy."
