They say Starbucks buys the cheapest beans it can get its hands on, and still stiffs on the price, Wal-Mart style. Then they over-roast the hell out of em, trying to make every drop last longer.

Proof, plz.

Bah. They have to be evil. Otherwise why would they have to make up cup sizes? It's obviously code for the different carcinogens in them.

Walk into Burger King and order a Big Mac. Go to McDonalds and tell them to Biggie Size your fries.
Umm... Big Mac is McDonalds too. You're thinking of the Whopper. But the whopper is at least a name for something. It's like calling soda Sprite. It isn't a can of fairy juice, it's just a name. And Biggie pretty much is a size. You at least get the idea that yeah, it's gonna be a ******** load of fries. Viente doesn't even have a connotation of largeness. And how is a small tall? It isn't tall at all, it's small and short. ******** that. At least Biggie, you know it's gonna be ******** BIG.

No, I'm not thinking of a whopper. What I'm saying is that you have the capability to recognize and differentiate proprietary names for different products. You're just being lazy, stupid, and hypocritical. Grande is Spanish for big. Funny that. Vente is Italian for twenty. As in the number of ounces in the cup. This is of course besides the fact that the cups are all prominently displayed in the store. Just point to the one you want, if you must.
And we'll just ignore the tall one? And how can one be lazy in their recognition? Either you realize something or you don't, you can't really be too lazy to realize something. And who ever said I liked McDonalds or Burger King either? confused

I think there's a mix, and it's dependent on the type of consumer. Some consumers will buy things solely because of the label, and that's fine, and others will buy solely for the quality of the product. It's the nature of consumerism.

I think, on the whole, most people fall somewhere in the middle. For instance, folks in this thread have posted reasons for liking, not liking Starbucks. No one seems to like it for the brand name, but rather enjoy a particular product.

I think you can throw in location as well. Big city atmosphere vs. smaller city atmosphere. Otherwise I'd say you're pretty spot on.

It's not that difficult, really. They're listed in order of price, with the number of ounces, even. Just like on every other menu board at every other restaurant. If folks would take half a second to read, it wouldn't be a problem.
No, I ******** get it. I'm not confused by their staggeringly intelligent use of foreign words and half truths to describe the size of their coffee. I'm just ******** BOTHERED by it.

I don't think you're confused, I think you're lazy and intolerant. I'm bothered by the "DUR, SPEAK AMERICAN!" mentality that seems to be so pervasive these days.

Shouldn't "Biggie Size" bother you? Isn't it irksome that there is a size called "Biggie?" Shouldn't they just use "large" or "extra large?" Isn't it irksome that all restaurants don't use the exact same terminology for upgrading the size of the meal?

The point is that it's unique to Starbucks, just like Super Size is unique to McDonald's, and "Biggie Size" is unique to Wendy's. You're right, it's NOT difficult, ANYONE can and should understand it. What seems to be the sticking point for most people is that Starbucks sizes are "foreign words."

That's true. I wonder, too, how the location affects the propensity to buy for label alone. I know that when Starbucks/Wal-Mart/Target/whatever opens in a smaller town, it's something of an event, and people flock there because it's . However, when the same thing opens in it's not the same big deal.

Yes, yes it is. Hence my non eating of McDonalds. And I'm really not bothered by foreign words. I've been taking French four years and going into AP next year. I thoroughly enjoy foreign languages. One of the large things that bothers me about it is that it's just tagged on to support some kind of sad image that somehow foreign words make it more sophisticated. Like when huge anime fans ramble on about Kawaii and Bishi, and all that bullshit. It just ******** perpetuates this feeling of superiority the people who sip on the s**t get. Maybe I'm speaking too much from my experience in a high school setting, but I see mostly pretentious people drinking Starbucks and it doesn't seem like a coincidence to me.

Hmm... to come extent. With regards to coffee quality, you're actually buying the product. Starbucks pays a LOT for the quality of coffee it serves. Higher than Fair Trade prices, FTW. domokun

I dunno, Ive heard a few rants about Starbucks from the folks at work, who drink coffee bascially all day long.

They say Starbucks buys the cheapest beans it can get its hands on, and still stiffs on the price, Wal-Mart style. Then they over-roast the hell out of em, trying to make every drop last longer.

Meh, I just like regular ol' folgers every now and then. Starbucks wont be around forever, theyre over-saturating the market, setting themselves up for some serious self-pwning.

They're wrong. Over-roasting makes coffee taste like s**t and makes for less product at the end of roasting. Companies who are trying to get more out of the beans they have under roast them, so that they lose less water and weigh more at the end of roasting.

I can only speak from my mother's experience (and some other people we knew from church) when a Super Wal-Mart opened way back when I was ... nine I think. We lived in a pretty decent sized town, and it was a pretty big event since specials were posted in the Sunday paper before it opened. My mom and friends went because the prices were better than elsewhere (on the same products they used anyway) and they just wanted to see what it looked like. Me ... I was just floored by the toy section. xD

Wal-Mart I do have completely legitimate complaints with. xd I just felt like arguing for the Starbucks thing really. So, yeah, a little deliberately thick headed, but the superiority complex that lots of people get from the place is pretty annoying.

There certainly are a number of people who are pretentious, who drink Starbucks. Same with any company. The sizes at Starbucks actually stem from Il Giornale, which is the company Howard Schultz started after a trip to Italy, where he was inspired by the cafe culture. Originally, before the cafes did well enough that he was able to buy Starbucks, they were very authentially Italian, and certain aspects were carried over into what is now Starbucks, and has evolved over time. The size names are part of that. Also, most cafes have "tall" and "grande." "Venti" is the only size unique to Starbucks.

Really, there are lots of companies who capitalize on the allure of foreign words, for no other reason to do just that. I realize that. However, it does not mean that is the case across the board.

It is. Truly. I've talked to plenty of them and want to wring their over-entitled necks myself. It's funny, because that attitude goes exactly against what the company stands for. xp
