I do fanart...and OCs....
Well, I do have some "OCs" that are based in the world of Ragnarok Online, so would that constitute as a "fan character"?

Yeah I guess in a way your RO OC would be considered a fan character, Midori. But then you have to go into the definition of the fan character. Cuz if that were the case for your RO OC, then Gaia avatars would also be considered fan characters. At least that's my opinion. So I will say no to that issue.
Plus the most annoying thing about most fan character that my gf dislikes is that they look so similar to the original character. That they are in love with a MAIN character in a series. I really dislike the idea of them interfering with the love affairs of a main character myself. However I could care less about the similarities in looks. It's more so when they go into the story and start disrupting it that makes them bad. And then that will just make bigger otaku out of the creators.
For myself however I like to do a lot of OCs more than fan art, though I also do fan art for friends of their OCs.

Oh, I see what you mean by fan character....though it sounds more like a "Mary Sue" in fanfiction terms.
As far as art, where they look almost exactly like an already-established character, that would be stealing. XD

And yeah it's pretty much stealing when the fan character looks pretty much the same except for maybe one change.. xp
And Suke-chan, I draw on the computer all the time. ^^;; Most of my artwork is digital compared to traditional. Though I think you can see that there really isn't much of a difference with my style going from computer to paper. My gf is really good with photoshop. 3nodding

Yeah, a Mary Sue is a character the author inserts, often representing his or herself. The character is often loved by everyone, has a perfect body, perfect grades, the center of attention, etc, etc, etc.
Since the character tends to be so perfect, there is nothing for the audience to relate to and therefore, the character is generally hated. razz
