She was in no rush to awaken either, but the sound of his voice threatened to lull her into a sleep she would not be able to get up from, so she turned to the side and grumbled as she forced herself awake. Her body bumped against him, and her eyes fluttered open. With a slow, lazy focus of her eyes on the item in his hands, she started to realize he was holding an artifact. And if he was holding an artifact, that meant it was the artifact. Her eyes widened to saucers, and she froze. "Is that.." She was scared to say it. What if he'd given up and just chosen another? What if she was just dreaming about him finding it? What if, what if, what if- What if he'd finally found what he was looking for? Maebe's heart clenched with an unexpected, guilty agony. Their adventure would be over. She thought she'd be happy about that. She wasn't.

Hastily he rubbed a finger against his eyes. "Yup." He was hushed, just in case making too much noise might attract more of the statues that had, hopefully, had their fill of them by them. Lifting the artifact, Dawson let it dangle on the chain in front of her eyes, grinning from ear to ear. "The Stymphalian Beak. Ain't she a beaut." Bronze and gold and wonderful in the dappled light.
He let it pool back into the space between his legs before draping his arm around Maebe's shoulders, pulling her in gently. "Couldna done this without you, Maebe Grace," Dawson went on warmly. "Thanks fer not givin' up on me."

It was smaller than she'd expected it to be, but no less beautiful, considering all they'd done to get it. She admired it with a childish smile, before his arms were around her and artifacts no longer existed. He held her, and there was nothing more powerful, nothing worth the struggle as much as the feel of his warm, grateful hug. She tried to wrap her arms around him, but felt weak, and unworthy. Instead she snuggled her face against him, and let out a quiet, shaky, needy response. "I'd never give up on you, Dawson Grace." And she wished she didn't mean that. She really did.

"I mean it, I owe ya." She'd seen his highs and lows and in betweens over the course of those almost five months now it had taken to get here.Maebe--the one who self-professed laziness and indulgences and hadn't had to stick around once it became clear how hard this was going to be. He was already squeezing tight before her reply, moreso afterwards. Action was more important, she'd said, and he agreed; actions spoke more for him than his clumsy vocabulary ever could, and if there was any way to transfer the amount of gratefulness and adoration and love into her, maybe a hug could translate it best. Maybe that was why he so often deferred to it.
Damn it, he still was on the verge of tearing up. This was embarassing.
"Ditto, y'know," Dawson eventually replied with a small laugh at himself, that he had to condense it into one word lest his voice crack or something. Hopefully his past actions had proven that well enough. "I, uh, still owe you that fancy dinner, don' I. Guess it means I also owe ya dessert now too."

"You owe me a lot of things, Sir Grace." Maebe muttered, perhaps a little too softly to sound anything but in love. She cracked a smile, and softly patted his cheek with one hand. "But dinner and dessert are going to have to do, for now. And not that fancy place, either. I want someplace with big servings. You can do the fancy one some other time. So really, that means two dinners, two desserts, and probably a lot of alcohol. All for me." Say what you would about the woman, but she did not have a problem with being spoiled.

He gave a soft haw and said, "Yer gonna run my wallet dry, huh," with complete understanding. "Well, then you pick the place n' time, aight? Fer now, uh..." Dawson pulled the artifact out from beneath her by the chain, stuck it in his pocket, and made to scoop Maebe up into his arms. "Least I can do is make sure y'get a safe ride back t'yer room, yeah?"

An embarrassing yelp of surprise left her when she was lifted into the air, but as soon as she realized what she was doing, she felt herself melting helplessly against him. This was horrible, in so many ways, and one day she knew she would look back at the power he held over her and cringe, but there was no helping her now. She rested her head against his shoulder, closed her eyes, and breathed him in. "Okay." She murmured, drunk with contentment. "Take me home, Sir Grace."

And so he hoisted her up, touched the pendant, and murmured, " Deus Ex Machina." The transporting process never settled well in his stomach. Dawson wavered in place and blinked before recognizing the infirmary right in front of them, and then he turned and led them towards the dorms. There was a strange feeling growing in him the closer they got. Temple exploring with her had been so ingrained in his routine, he wasn't sure how it was going to feel without that block of time set aside each week. Two whole dinners, even with desserts, didn't feel like enough suddenly. He swallowed nervously and hesitated instead of putting her down once they were at the door. "Hey, uh, Mayb?"

The walk from the lighthouse to the dorms had lulled her into a quiet, hazy mood; but when she heard his voice, her eyes opened wide, forcing herself to sober up and focus. She lifted her head up to look around at where they were, before tilting it up at him curiously. He sounded strange, but on a day like today, she found it easy to dismiss any worries the tone might have normally caused. This was a big day, for him. A big, wonderful day. "Yeah?" Her gravelly voice muttered out in an exhale.

She'd been almost sleeping, he shouldn't be bugging her with any sort of delay after all that work. "I, uh..." Dawson chewed his lip and hummed like he was thinking to try and buy him some time, but honestly he couldn't get his thoughts straight if he tried. There was no logical reason to want to kiss her all of a sudden--certainly there was a moral obligation not to put that pressure on her after their last exchange about it. He felt ashamed of his baser impulses. After a moment he squeezed his eyes closed, shook his head slightly, and made to gently set her back down. "Nothin', nothin'. Still in a tizzy after all that," he tried to joke with a tired smile. "Here we are, honey, home sweet home."

Her arms stretched out long behind her head, until she felt her body waking up enough to drop them back down limp. Acting sleepy and being sleepy were two different things, and the way she hung off of him now was definitely an act. "Good," She grumbled. "I need a nice, long nap. Here." Her key was produced out of her bra, and placed in his lap - all while still acting like she was a useless pile of jello. "Open her up for me, Sir Grace. Let's put this puppy to bed."

In actuality he was a little grateful. One more job to do instead of just standing there like an awkward troll. One arm remained around her just to make sure Maebe didn't literally ooze to the ground while the other got to unlocking the door, and then Dawson gently ushered her in. Having seen Maebe kick more than her fair share of a**, he can't help but chuckle to himself at the thought that he was babying her at all. "Thought you was more a kitten," he observed, pausing at the doorway to see if he had more jobs left still.

"You make a good point." She purred out, deftly climbing out of his arms once they were inside of her room. She took her key back and placed it on the desk, before kicking her shoes off and opening up a drawer to pull out her pajamas. "I'm so proud of you." She chuckled out, throwing the pajamas on the bed. "Maybe a little proud of me, too." She closed the drawer, and returned to him, wrapping loose arms around his shoulders in order to lean against him. "We never gave up. There's very few things in this world I can say that about." And most of that short list had to do with him, in some way. She realized that, and it pasted a lazy smile on her face. "You sleeping at your place tonight? I'd invite you to come sleepover, but not with the clothes we just ******** around in. I mean, I love you, but good Lord, not that much."

"Aww~" He scratched the back of his neck sheepishly and made a soft noise in surprise when she did her almost-hug. Expression warming, he encircled his arms around her again. "M'proud've you too, Mayb." The impulse was back, but it was safe; Dawson kissed her hair. "Super duper proud. S'for where, uh...I mean, I'd need a nice long shower first, yeah, but I'm not opposed to some non-dungeony sleepin' t'night." When was he ever?

The kiss to her hair normally deflated her, but this time, there was a lot of importance behind it, and she beamed with the pride she wouldn't have managed without him. She hadn't even thought she was going to make it to showering tonight, but if he was going to, there was no reason she couldn't. "Okay. Respective showers and changing, meet back here when we're both clean and won't ruin my beautiful bed. It's a deal, sweetheart." She untangled her arms, grabbed her clothing, and the key from the cabinet. "And then.. sleep. A lot of long, well earned sleep. Then maybe we can play with our new toys." She ushered him out of the room impatiently, so she could lock the door tight behind them.
