Kevin offered Toby the box, looking curious. He'd never used them before. "What do they do?" He asked.
"He's always planning to tease me. He's decided my hair's on fire. At least, last time I saw him." Luca grinned. "Well. He's been talking about your human for days now."

Toby opened the boxnand went to the walkway nearby (so as to guard them on one side from neighbors of course) and heaved one at the ground. It popped loudly and scattered little pieces.
"Has he?" Dari asked, "I didn't even know he knew we were going to get Cody." In fact. "Actually I'm pretty sure he didn't know. What did I do?"

Kevin grinned and took one out of the box and mimicked Toby's motions. He threw it against the ground.
"I don't know. He's been asking who's made you mushy like Toby and if you had a Maia."

Predictably, the popper exploded. Toby handed the box to the kelpie.
"Resist the urge to throw them all at once. It's totally disappointing."
"Huh. Cute," Dari said, but half under his breath out of reflex.
Lori took a sip of his drink,an arm around Luca. "He used to not like the whole 'gay' thing. At all. Kid's come a long way."

Kevin took the box gleefully and threw another. It exploded. Apparently, for all his asking for loud noises, the kelpie was easily pleased. He offered one to Toby. "Play with me?" he asked.
"He seems happy," Luca observed. He smiled.

Toby took the popit and heaved it at the ground by Kevin's feet. Sure, why not? He had nothing to prove any more.
"I think he is," Lori said, "Until he has friends his own age I don't think we're doing a bad job."
Dari nodded. "He likes going out and doing things. We didn't have all too much hope in a kelpie, but they can always surprise you."

The pop it exploded and Kevin grinned, throwing another. "This is great," He said. "Do we have any more?" The box said there were only sixty. That wasn't nearly enough! "Hey Toby! Look!" He threw two at a time, but only one exploded. He stomped on it.
"Really? Are they that bad?" Cody asked.

Toby shrugged. "We can look. I know we have sparklers and things. Those are for after dark, though." He took another and pitched it against the ground as hard as he could. It exploded into little bits of stone with a disappointingly similar pop sound.
Dari turned to Cody. "They're known to entice and drown children and then eat them. So, yes. They're that bad." He laughed slightly.

Kevin looked suspiciously over to Dari and Cody. "Are you guys talking about me?" he asked. "I didn't drown anyone, you know! It's not my fault that kid drowned!" He threw down another pop It. "What're sparklers?" He asked.
Cody snickered. "Well, now you've made one angry."

"No, we're talking about kelpies as a whole," Dari said with a laugh, "You happen to be a good one."
Toby paused. "They... sparkle? Sort of like matches but spark-y."

Kevin wrinkled his nose briefly. He seemed to reconsider after a moment and nodded. "I'm a good one," He agreed. Just like Toby was a good werewolf. "Sounds fun," He said. "Will you do one with me?"

"...well we have a whole pack, so we can all do one," Toby said with a grin. He loved firsts, but he didn't imagine a couple of poppers and a sparkler was going to make this kid's summer. What would he think about the firework finale?

"Really?" Kevin smiled happily. "Good." He continued to throw poppers, offering Toby a handful. "I like today. Can we do days like this more often?"
Maia offered Lori a plate of watermelon, and then Dari. "Here," she said. "It's really good."

"Yeah," Toby replied. He took the handful but, true to his word, didn't throw them all at once. "Well today's a holiday. I mean, there are plenty of them, but they've all got their special things to do."
Lori took a slice, and so did Dari. Watermelon was one heck of a weird texture after all. Dari took a bite and nodded. "It is."

When dusk began to settle, Toby turned back to Maia's bag and rooted through it. Kevin had been excited about sparklers, so he opened the box and passed them out. He had brought a lighter himself and raised it to Kevin's sparkler.
"Are you ready?"
