I'm four to five minutes (Never timed myself) from the Columbia River.

Its just across the street and down a steep hill. I assume it'd take two ish minutes if you went that way, less if you tripped and rolled down it.
Do people swim in the river? I don't think it'd be very sanitary.

There is fish poop anyways. There are not only people swimming, but there is also a lot of boating.
I don't think my character would care.
