I still think you should abort magic for Warhammer 40K. Buying all the D20 books is cheaper... hell, a crack habit is cheaper. Buying the Battle for Maccarage set for 40$ gets you most of the rules, some terrain, templates, and a full tactical squad of marines and a bunch of Tyranids. Trade the Nids for the marines from someone who bought the set and dislikes marines (there's a lot of people who would rather have all one thing than some of each). Then drop another 10$ or so on a Chaplain and you have a 750 point Marines army for about 50$. That will easily cover you for small games and give you the figures necessary for a good Kill Squad team (its a small unit variation of the main game, really good, and really cheap). My 1500 point capable Tau army is worth just more than 200 dollars... and that's with two tanks.
