The Prequels have their merits, and good stuff about 'em. I think some change and new blood can always be a good thing, in doses.
Are they the best movies...no.
Are they still Star Wars, and like awkward cousins I have to love? Yes.
I am of a similar mind in regards to the prequels. There are hundreds of little moments in the prequels that I love, and even the few parts that I hate can't completely spoil it for me.
Could it have been much, much better? Definitely. But not with GL at the helm. Remember that in the OT, George only directed the first movie, and even then he had his subordinates do most of the actor coaching, dialogue revision, etc. Y'know, the major, glaring weaknesses of the prequels... EXACTLY.
When I look at the prequels I think about how many people shaped and created it. What was good was basically not Lucas material. So many characters that I grew to love like Aayla Secura, Kit Fisto, Master Nu, and hell even Padme, were basically shaped and made by so many character designers, costume artist, hair stylists...
There is SO MUCH OBVIOUS Star Wars nerdy fan love in there. These are professionals that you know heard they got the job working on Star Wars and probably peed a little. Just a little. Maybe cried with joy. Even the guy who's directing The Clone Wars (David Filoni) left Avatar the Last Airbender because it was his dream to do Star Wars! Ashley Eckstein, who voices Ahsoka Tano, started Her Universe. A clothing store for female Star Wars fans.
I had a friend who hated Star Wars and didn't really get it until she saw the Prequels, and now she sees it with new eyes. Not to mention I know some guys in the 501st who instantly started to make Clone trooper TK's because they knew kids loved it. I love anything that gets anyone into Star Wars. It's such a vast universe with so many different things to love! So if there's a part you don't like, for Pete's sake, remember there's so much you enjoy! I feel like saying the Prequels are bad is like a tired running joke. Let's also talk about the sky being blue, and water being wet.
I just see so much good in it I can't hate it for the bad. Even if the bad was really bad...
Now...
Someone hold me on the lakes of Naboo. I have Episode I to go see.
