Eldrin and Earendil blinked at Lin, both of them eually confused. "When they have legs?" they chorused together.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Earendil added, stunned.

"Well yes silly," Lin replied, "They're mers! Mers don't have legs, they have tails, how else do they swim up and down the rivers and in the oceans and in the streams... and all those places without their tails?"

Earendil was still very confused, and it was obvious by the look on his face. "So ... they're fish?" he guessed, since that was about as close a description as he could think of.
Eldrin was inclined to agree with Earendil's suggestion, but that didn't explain the legs ...

"They're half fish," Lin explained a bit experrated, "You really should meet a mer sometime, they're quite interesting and can get things from the bottom of lakes. See," she showed them using herself as a diagram, "They're all people this way up and all tail this way down."

"So mers are half fish," Eldrin nodded understandingly. His face twisted into a confused expression. "Then angels are half-birds?"
Earendil remained silent. He had only been only about a year old when the angels has been visiting the castle, and to tell the truth he didn't really remember anything about them ... had completely forgotten about them, in fact, until Yue had reappeared with Donovan and Triton the other night at dinner.

Lin looked confused at that, she hadn't thought of it that way before, but they couldn't be half birds because well it was like saying her brother was half cat (though in a way he was).
"No... angels are...." she didn't know how to explain.
She didn't understand that angels could be immortal or that they had a different aura, or that they had a long history with demons and certain demons were fallen angels.

Eldrin and Earendil waited patiently for several long moments, waiting for Lin to explain what angels were. After a long silence, Eldrin prompted her, "Angels are ..."
Earendil stared at her intently, waiting.

Asking Lin to explain what was originally a spiritual concept was like asking her to explain natural birth. It wasn't going to help at any rate.
Lin pouted, "You know.... just people who have wings, if they were bird people they would have a tail, but they don't. Cindy has a tail, but that's because she's kind of like a bird."
They probably had better luck asking Donovan than asking Lin.

The two elves looked at each other and exchanged a puzzled glance, then shrugged.
"Well, we should be getting back down for lunch, now, anyways," Eärendil smiled at Lin, rising from his place on the couch and coming over to pick her up. "I need to wash first, and it's a long way back."
Thankfully, he only had half-days of training; though he suspected they would become full days once he was finished his schooling.

Lin didn't fuss when she was picked up and let him without any trouble.
"Getting clean in those swimming pools?" Lin inquired of him.
Since those were what they looked like to her.

Eärendil picked her up and held her in his arms like a baby, and looked down at her with a puzzled expression on his face.
"Swimming pools?" he asked, confused. "What are those? Bye, Uncle!" he added to Eldrin as he left with Lin. As he headed back to the compound to get his things, he looked back at her.

"Bye bye!" Lin waved, "See you again!"
Don't ask how she was going to manage that, no one could pull the same trick twice even Lin.
"And they're pools of water you swim in," Lin replied, "You know... swimming pools."

"Actually," Eärendil replied softly, "I don't. Your world is very different from ours, Lin ... I should love very dearly to see it one day."
He picked up his shirt and canteen and slung them over his shoulder, then started for the path that led to the stairs.
"What do you think?" he grinned. "Can I come see you someday? Instead of you people always coming here? I want to travel, too."
Though he had also dreamed of someday sailing the oceans - there was so much to see that no one knew about, and he had after all been named after Eärendil, the famour mariner who had sailed all of Arda and up to the stars ...

"Yes! And then I can show you home and then show you where I came from and show you the outside.. .and..." Lin though what else? There was a lot actually
"There was a swimming pool in my bathroom," she commented.

Eärendil blinked. "A swimming pool in your bathroom?" he questioned, slightly confused. He thought about it for a moment, and suddenly he realize what she was talking about.
"Ah!" he exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face. "You mean a bath in your bathing chamber! Well of course there is, that's what the room is for!"
And then he paused, realizing something else. "I see ... to someone of your stature, it would be large enough to swim in ..."
