Serenity looked at Kara, startled. "Well," she amended sheepishly, "I suppose it really depends on where you are ... this is the only one in the Borderlands, but if you're out in the wilder forests there are more ... and if you go to the Northland, there are a lot. But in the Southland there are none at all, because they can't survive in the desert."
She shrugged. "It's all relative, but any way you look at it you have to be careful."

"I know there are plants that are poisonious back home, but not by touch alone... that's mainly for the animals like tree frogs, though... I've never seen a tree frog...." she mused on that.

Serenity thought carefully for a moment, then murmured, "I don't know if we have animals like that here ... I know where I was born, we had them - but I don't think there are any in the Four Lands."
She thought about all the animals she had been, all the animals she had seen, all the animals she had eaten. "No ..."

"Well.... I've never really seen a tree frog, only in books," Kara watched it a bit more, very hard to believe, "Do you know why it's so posionious? I mean... most trees would find an advantage having creatures near it, but this one doesn't like anything near it..."

Serenity had never really thought about it ... as far as she was concerned, the tree didn't need a reason to be poisonous, it just was. And as far as she knew, it had been that way since creation ... which answered the question in and of itself.
"Melkor," she murmured.

"What's that?" Kara asked looking up at Serenity.
She had never heard of the term before.

Serenity shook her head. "Not what," she corrected. "Who. Melkor. The Vala who went bad ..."
She shrugged. "Really he's more a legend than anything else, he's the only one of the Valar who no one has ever met, and the Valar refuse to talk about him ... so what we do know of him is pure speculation. Mostly, anyways. The facts that we know are true are these: that when the world was being created, he did what he could to turn it from a paradise into a dangerous place where neither elf nor human would be able to survive."

Most would write it off as legend, but being the mother of six Seconds told her otherwise, it was quite possible actually.
"So the tree is a leftover from that..."

"As are all things poisonous, all thistles and thorns, all weeds," Serenity added dryly. "Sicknesses, diseases, natural disasters - all of that is a direct result of Melkor's interventions."
She paused. "Though, the valleys and mountains are also a result of him," she murmured, "so ... I suppose it wasn't all bad."

"Why create the valleys and mountains? They're pretty and good things can grow there and only there because of the way it is," Kara inquired thinking.
If only life was so simple back home, she wondered if Gaia had the same thing happen to it, she only had science to explain. Well there were deities, but she had no interest in them, only the spirits her mother use to tell her about.

"I think it was more the idea that where the Valar created mountains, Melkor made valleys; where the Valar created valleys, Melkor made mountains," Serenity replied thoughtfully. "But ... he was also the one who made the demons ... or ... rather, corrupted living beings into becoming demons."
Her eyes grew shadowed.

It was very different from Gaia, but Kara knew that, it was just hard to imagine at times. Though there were always dangerous... creatures that is.
"Are you okay?"

"Did you know," Serenity mused, raising her eyes to the sky and folding her arms thoughtfully, "I have no idea what the land is called where I was born ... and I lived there until I was five years old ..."
Though in reality she was remembering the night her brother had been killed.

"Well five is young, the idea of country names and borders... even racial differences are non existence when you're that young," Kara replied, "That's why I love it when children are little...." she mused thoughtfully remembering Daeron.
Though Daeron hadn't changed, but the experiences of when he was young probably had part to do with it.

Serenity smiled softly. "Yes, I suppose so," she murmured. "Although I suppose it doesn't matter anymore, since its no longer even a settlement."
She took a seat on the grass, then lay back and closed her eyes. "Perhaps we should rest a bit before heading back, yes?" she suggested. "At least, I will have to, if I'm going to be flying back."
