I don't get a lot of the swordplay stuff in anime, movies, etc. nowadays.
It's always a katana. Everytime they want a bad-a** blade, it's always a damned katana.
Last time I checked, flamberges were pretty mean.

I fi were a pirate I would opt for arrows and muskets over scabbards, Long range > short range.

Last time I checked, flamberges were pretty mean. I am annoyed with the sword as the primary weapon of the hero in most modern fantasy novels. There are so many more good weapons such as axes, maces, warhammers, spears, etc. (Although I do love swords I think the other weapons need more love as far as the main hero is conserned.)

Well said, Johnny. It seems that for the most part, folks tend to associate swords with weaponry in novels. Particularly as being used by the primary hero.
Case in point, my username. The character of Celestia is *le gasp!* a sword user. I based my characters surnames on the primary weapon their class is associated with. And when people think of warriors, swords immediately cross their minds.
With that said, other weapons should be looked into for warriors, such as the ones you mentioned.
Magic: the Gathering has weapons in the form of artifacts known as the equipment subtype. Naturally, there are swords, but they also utilize bows, spears, warhammers and the like. Also, a beginner set created a few years ago has a small sword icon to denote a creature's attack power on the cards.
In Dofus, the weapon types are: sword, dagger, hammer, wand, staff, bows and even shovels!

Swords would be m personal preference, but I'll take magic any day.
Nothing beats throwing the elements at people, flying, conjuring dragons, minions, etc. to blow people away.

Even better. heart As much as I like warriors and all, I like wizards and magical girls even more. 3nodding I sometimes pretend to be a magical girl whilst playing Magic. ^^

I like to think that when I snap my fingers, Microshit HQ spontaniously explodes into a Hellfire.

I have always been the warrior type. Magic is a nice diversion but I prefer the test of physical strength against an opponent in melee. I distrust magic users too much (I find them to be almost too dishonest.). I kind of am like a dwarf in that regard.

Dwarves are pretty neat.
As for fighters, warriors and magic users, everyone has their talents. They may come across as dishonest, but then, magic, like anything else, is but a tool. It's all in the way you utilize it.
In one story a friend and I colaborated on, my magic user helped defuse a hostage situation by using her magic to destroy the bad guy's weapons.

I guess I have had too many bad experiences with magic users in DnD that I am jaded. Most notably was my friend's Archmage not only selling his soul but trying to sell the rest of the party's souls to a Devil to gain power. Needless to say the rest of the party was pissed at him for the rest of the night.

Powerful sorceress FTW!
Though, not the typical scantily-clad, sultry kind. I'd rather have magical armor that was impervious to everything and to me, was light as a feather, so I'd be a combination tank/nuker type.

That's just plain over-doing it. btw: did you ever play Magic: the Gathering? *not sure if i ever asked you or not* To quote Peter Parker: with great power comes great responsibility.
