If my parents let me, I'll be starting mellophone because this year all the mellophones in my school's marching band are graduating.

That's why I joined this year, to get experience because the whole mello line minus myself is graduating this year. smile

GO FRENCH HORNS!!! (french horns are so harder than trumpet)
PostPosted: Sat Nov 25, 2006 10:02 am

I agree but section leader says "trumpet is one of the hardest instrument to play and french horn isn't as hard as everyone thinks." I just about wanted to bop her on the head with something. Then again she still has loyalties to trumpet and she might be thinking to when she first started trumpet.

Yeah, because hse already had brass experience when she started playing the horn she probubly had an easier time switching to it then a person who had never played prass before.

Hey I've been playing horn for 7 years now, and yeah I love it, I'm playing with my school's string orchestra right now since I am the only wind player in my very small school and it is so fun

i play french horn at my high school and i hope to be a section leader for marching band next year.

Question: In anybody's opinion, what brand of horn do u like better and why?
I have a yamaha horn that's mine and even though it's old and has some dents, which i plan to fix, it's tuning is great. My other horn, which belongs to the school, is a Conn. It has a great tone but it always seems to be sharp when i play, no matter how much i open up my throat.

If i could hear people's opinions, that would be great.

All I've ever worked with is my school Conn8D.
I'd take home a Holton, but all their strings are hoplessly tangeled and the valves don't seem to turn. D=
Pity; they're such nice instruments.
I'd mess with all the tuning slides on your Conn; mine seems to run sharp much of the time too.
If you want to figure out which slides go with which side of the horn, just take one out and try playing on different sides.
On an 8D, only one should be universal, and the rest should be F, though...
(so annoying because I use the Bb side most)

I use an 8D and totaly about the sharp thing, I always annoy my orchestra cause they don't understand how hard it is to keep in tune

i'm gonna put the laquer aka 'the shiny stuff' back on my horn so i can play it at concerts.
I think there may be something up with my Conn cause i have the B flat slide all the way out but it's still sharp. it may just be me.

I was having that problem last year...
I could pull the slide as far as it would go and take my hand out of the bell and still be sharp.
Then my BD yelled at a trumpet for bad ambochere, and told him to open up his mouth and throat.
I've been trying to do that, and I think (hope) it's working...

You took the laquer off your horn? v.v Poor non-shinry horn. Maybe you should try switching mouthpeices to a larger rim. I had the same problem and when I swiched to a Yamaha (No idea the modle, because my mom took the prive sticker witch had it on it off) my tone dropped to where i was no longer sharp but flat.
Has anyone ever been on a stage with colored lights right on top of you and then when you play all you can see is glare off of the horn sitting next to you? Isn't that evil?

I agree but section leader says "trumpet is one of the hardest instrument to play and french horn isn't as hard as everyone thinks." I just about wanted to bop her on the head with something. Then again she still has loyalties to trumpet and she might be thinking to when she first started trumpet.

The woodwind conductor at a regional thing ages ago said french horn was the hardest instrument out there.
Anyway, you can play a horn like a horn or a trumpet, you can only play a trumpet like a trumpet.

I have a yamaha but I don't know about Conns. My yamaha goes a bit sharp sounding (it's not really sharp, just sounds different to F, more trumpety, but still sharp without being sharp, I think I need a new word.)

I haven't been blinded by horn-glare but I hate those lights, they are much too hot. Baked horn player.

Try brassy? Bright?

I hate those lights ><
It always starts out cold in the auditorium, but all of a sudden you're sweating all over the place...
