"Like learning to read and cook," Maia nodded. He didn't want her to worry about having a job, but that was fine. She'd have more time to practice things, spend time with Seamus, read. "Can we go shopping, after? I've never been shopping in Arizona. Or anywhere besides the small clothing outlet store near her beach.
"I'll be able to call you. That'll be nice."

"Uh..." Someone generally did go on an outing with entities to get them some not-entirely-necessary supplies; things they may want or feel they needed that were not bare-bones for survival. It just wasn't usually him. "Sure, maybe. When I have a day off. There's a big mall not too far off.
"Yeah, it's good to be able to get in contact. You can have some more freedom." Of course buses didn't run out here. Taxis either. Nothing but agents' cars, as the gate out in front of the property warned.

"Really?" Maia asked, smiling. "It'll be nice to see what they have." See if they had any sundresses. "I've never been to a mall." But she'd heard about them. "They're the big stores that have a whole bunch of stores in them, right?"
"So I can go to the lake?" she asked.

"Sure, why not?" A mall trip wasn't exactly Toby's idea of fun but he'd been on enough of them in the past to not let it bother him much. He carried all of the bags without whinging. "They're really just a big building with a bunch of stores inside of them, although some of those stores are almost always department stores which is a big store with a bunch of different... departments. So you can buy clothes and you can buy furniture and luggage and kitchenware..." One could never know how much an entity knew about things that humans took for granted.
"Yeah, sure. It's been a while since I've been there anyway."

"So I can buy some clothes suited to the weather here, I want to blend in." She'd never bothered much when she'd lived in Oregon. It hadn't mattered. But here, she wanted to get a job, maybe go places. Meet a guy, even, if she stayed long enough. "I think I'll look for things we can do together. Maybe a ball or something for the lake."

"Well I have an XBox back home, and a boat out on the lake. I don't know if it's time for all of the summer stuff to be out yet but I'd bet we could find a ball and some inner tubes or something. There's a separate swimming area at the lake."
They turned up his road. He could see Dari's car already parked in the driveway.
"We're almost there." He offered another little smile.

"Xbox?" Maia echoed, blinking. "What's that?" Why was it important that he had one? And he had a boat! "Lets go," she suggested. "Next free day?" Almost there. Great. She'd be able to tell Dari their plan to go to the mall.
"You'll give me a tour?"

"Oh, sorry. It's... hm. You know how you can play video games on a computer? There are also machines you can play them on, but each machine has a range of games, and often some you can't get on the computer." He nodded. "I'll check my schedule." He wasn't sure it was right to spend so much time with a new client but he was pretty sure he had nothing planned.
"A tour? Of... town? Or?" He pulled into the driveway behind Dari's car. They'd be leaving at the same time anyway. He parked, turned it off, and began to gather his things.

"Oh. So they're like computers...but better?" Maia asked. And Toby agreed to come! Well, mostly. "I hope you have a day off soon," She said.
"Of your house. But maybe the town another time. Its too late for that now," They parked in the driveway and the selkie beamed, spotting Dari's car. "Dari's already here!" She opened the car door and hopped out.

"There's hot debate about which is better." Ah, teenagers. "I usually get Fridays and Saturdays off, if all goes well." They had been expecting to be out in the field all this week, though. He wasn't sure what would become of that and he'd forgotten to ask.
"Oh, sure." Then Maia was out of the car and so was he. "He is!" He motioned that she could go ahead. He walked at a more leisurely pace, really wanting to get his clothes off and switched for something more comfortable.
Toby's house was white, good for reflecting the sun's light, with two stories. There was gravel with bushes growing from it in the front yard and a bit of grass. A fence suggested a back yard as well. There was no garage, but there was a rather large driveway.

"Friday isn't that far away," Maia beamed at Toby, "so let's do something then." She was eager to talk to Dari, too. She made her way to the door, and waited for Toby. "You've got a huge house," She observed. So much bigger than her apartment had been. "Looks nice, too!"
"So your Xbox, can we play it?"

Maia was more than eager to take over all of his plans, wasn't she? He smiled with amusement and came up the front steps with her, unlocking the door and pushing it open. Dari was shuffling around in the bathroom. Toby could hear him. He gave a sigh. "Sure, we can play it." His house was honestly not all that big. A bit big for just one man, maybe, but it was rarely just him any more.
"We're back!" he called. Dari said nothing back. He didn't have to.

"It's nice," Maia studied her surroundings with interest. "Dari! Come out, we're going to tell you all our plans!" She looked around, hoping to catch sight of her favorite alien. She moved to hug Toby.
"Thank you for dinner. And bringing me here."

"You're welcome," Toby replied with a little laugh.
Dari's head popped out of a door to the right. He had a wet wipe and was rubbing the paint off of his body. It was clear just from his shoulder and arm that he was at least topless. His expression was curious.
"You have plans?"
"Not really." Toby pulled himself away from Maia and started about putting his keys down, so on and so forth.

"Don't lie," Maia scolded Toby, "We have all sorts. We're going to go to the mall, and the lake, and maybe have a tour of the town--and tonight we're having another sleep over. Toby says we can play on his Xbox. I've never seen one though." It seemed Toby had fallen into routine: she figured he was about to change clothes any moment now.
She looked to Dari. "After you're done, want to show me?"
