"Forge?" Mailon was impressed. "I suppose people will fill their rooms as time goes on ... still. A forge. That is quite the accomplishment. Who uses it? What do they make?"
He wasn't used to being allowed to ask questions, and he was finding that he liked it very much. Information had never been given to him this freely.
At least, not since before he had left his people.

"My brother Andarien and one of our traveling companions, Silverbirch uses the forge."
Once Mailon was sitting, Miyuki handed him the closed box and a fork. Bento boxes often had several compartments, one main one for the main meal, two for small sides and one for a small desert. Though only the main compartment was used because that was all that was made last night.
"Andarien makes gears for mechanical things and Silverbirch makes bullet casings for her pistol."

Mailon accepted the box and fork gratefully and opened it up right away. He was surprised to see steam escaping the box when he opened it, and he the aroma of the food hit him right away.
"This smells wonderful," he breathed, and his stomach growled loudly in anticipation. He took a bite and looked back at Miyuki.
"And what do the others do?" he asked her curiously. "I know your father makes maps, but what of the others?"

"Mom has decided to just write about their travels. She was originally trained though in all kinds of fighting," Miyuki replied, "Shiro is a scholar in everything, so he studies whatever catches his interest, which can be just about everything. Kaito is his brother and sticks around him, but he trains Andarien in his spare time."
It wasn't like everyone had a job, but everyone wanted to travel.
"Auntie Iorlas sews, when she and Uncle Dareon aren't looking after Amir. Uncle Dareon was a fighter back in the Four Lands, he helps with the hunts here. Wren came with us to just see what is out there and be away from home. Lancaeriel was originally traveling to find her husband Cael, but now that they found each other they just travel with us. Though both are very knowledgeable in magic and Lancaeriel is my teacher. She also plays music, and Auntie Iorlas, her and myself do story telling shows to make money. Cael is apparently an artist, all those paintings on the walls in the tent are by him. Silverbirch and Eron ended up here by accident so they're traveling with us so they can get back home. Besides making bullet casings, Silverbirch is a hunter, her family are nomads so they're good at hunting. Eron is actually a chemistry teacher, that is he knows how to use pure materials and mix them to do other things."

Mailon kept eating while Miyuki explained, and when she finished he nodded slowly.
"And Kyrie is your guide," he murmured softly, almost to himself. "In some ways a diverse group, and in some ways ..."
He grew quiet, thoughtful, and continued to eat.
Suddenly the tent door opened again, and Shoneah stepped out. She glanced around quickly for a moment, then approached Miyuki and Mailon.
"Hello, Miyuki," she called out as she came close to them. "Have you seen Andarien? He asked me to meet him at the forge just before lunch but he's not there yet."

Miyuki blinked, normally Andarien would be on time but...
"I think he went to train with Kaito and well... it's Kaito..." Miyuki startled tentatively.
So if Andarien was running late, it might not be a surprise in that regard.

Shoneah's forehead creased slightly, but she nodded. "I'll go look for him with Kaito then," she murmured. "Thanks."
She glanced at Mailon briefly before she headed off into the trees, but she didn't say anything more.
Mailon looked at Miyuki. "Who was that?" he asked her.
He didn't know who she was and was afraid his presence might have made her uncomfortable, which would explain to him why she hadn't spoken to him.

"That's Silverbirch," Miyuki replied, "She's actually fairly new to the group too. Granted it's been more than a month now since she and Eron joined."
So they weren't new anymore, but Miyuki figured there was a lot of adjustment, what with them being shoved into another world and all.

Mailon nodded. "She seems a bit ... wary," he said hesitantly. "Or is she just shy?"
He would understand if she were wary of him; he couldn't escape his past, after all. As much as he wished he could undo the actions of his first life, he couldn't.
But perhaps he was misjudging her. After all, he didn't know how many people knew about his past.

"Hmmm... a bit of both," Miyuki replied.
She didn't know how Shoneah took the story of Mailon, while she wasn't told in great detail, she did know that Mailon had done something bad in his past life.
"Sliverbirch and Eron fell into this world from Gaia, so they weren't expecting to be here. It's a large change for her, to be away from her family, to depend on other people and everything. I mean... I think she's around my age."
She thought, because it was hard for Miyuki to judge her own age except that she was probably an adult by the standards of this world.

Mailon nodded sympathetically.
"I know what it's like to be away from your family," he said quietly. "It is difficult."
He finished off the food and closed the box again, setting the fork on top of it. "Thank you. It was quite delicious."
It had filled him, too, which was nice.

"You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it," Miyuki smiled.
She paused and then thought about something, the way he had emphasized with Shoneah made her think.
"What was your family like?" she asked, "You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but you mentioned knowing what it's like being away from family."

Mailon blinked in surprise at the question, and then he chuckled softly.
"My family," he murmured, sounding somewhat amused. "Well. When I was young, I was very close with my family. My mother, especially. My father taught me about fishing and hunting, though I did little of either until after I was exiled. On my tenth birthday I became the tribe's Weapons Master, and after that I was on my own."
He shrugged. "That's about all there is to tell. Family doesn't mean much to my people. Thankfully I was well provided for because of my station, but that has nothing to do with family."

"It doesn't? But then... how do you form relationships? Get married, that sort of thing. Or is marriage just... a thing that has to happen?"
She tilted her head, a bit confused because she couldn't imagine such a lifestyle. It sounded lonely, and elves were pretty social people the last she had checked.

Mailon shrugged. "I was never interested in anyone, and never had time to worry about it. Love ... emotions are not something spoken about there. Respect is shown by treating someone as an equal. I was thrown very early into the world of adults, but I did not deal with every aspect of it."
The corner of his mouth twitched downwards, and he had to fight to keep from frowning.
