Actually, you are probably right, first thing they say after having confirmed they can in fact live there, is they see the Clipsy and go "Ohhhh wow. Can I pet him?!?!"

As I recall, when I truly got to know Eclipse, he was rampaging out of control and trying to bite through my arm. Which ironically probably worked better to keep me around than him being tiny and cute.
