Michael's words were met with sparks from light fixtures and the house giving a dangerous rumble. "NO!" cried Alex. There was a loud bang; all the doors in the house had opened and slammed at the same time. His eyes had gone black and had yet to revert to their usual brown. "Its my fault. Momma died because of me?!" The tv flickered and ended up on a static station.

"No!" Michael said, raising his voice to speak over the sounds the boy was making. "Do you remember the blackness? Then the light! I know there was a light, but you turned away, because you heard her in the hallway. She died in that fire, because she couldn't get to you. Which means you couldn't get out. Alexander, you and I, we're both dead!"
Toby woke with a start and looked to Dari, who had awoken similarly. Something bad was happening. He eyed the door. Was it safer in here?

One of the standing lamps fell to the floor. Alexander was shaking. "No," he said again. He shook his head and sobbed. "You're a LIAR! I knew you were!" He vanished, but the sounds coming from him continued. The house practically echoed with sobs.
Maia woke and looked around. "Toby?"

"I'm sorry, Alexander, but it's true," Michael said, and he put his hand to his forehead. This was why the sentient ones sucked. You were hurting someone with every little bit of progress.
He teleported into the room his colleagues were sleeping in.
"I've told him," Michael said, voice flat. "It will be some time before he accepts that he is dead, but I believe that he will."
Toby nodded. "What was that noise? Our door... nothing exploded...?"
"No. The doors opened and closed. A lamp fell over. The lights may be overloaded."
"Is that...?" Toby gestured to the empty air.
"Yes."

The cries intensified. Then, abruptly there was a pause. Alexander stood in the room, eyes black. "I want you to LEAVE!" he cried. He went towards Maia and wrapped himself around her. "All of you but this one! Leave NOW! I don't want you EVER to come back!"
He'd keep this one.

Toby distinctly wished for a Ghostbusters proton pack, right at that very moment. His eyes went wide. They could just leave, that was simple enough, but what if he tried to possess her? What if he trapped her?
Michael apparently had already considered all of these options and lunged into Maia.
Toby said: "Let her go."
Michael said: "Alexander, you're being unreasonable." At least it was Michael's voice coming from Maia's feminine lips. Maia undoubtedly would be rather frightened, but while Michael tried to keep the child spirit at bay, he tried to reassure and warm her through physical comfort.

"No!" Alex responded to Toby first, eyes narrowing. But hearing Michael's voice come from Maia seemed to startle him. He released her, and turned his attention to Toby. "Leave!" he commanded, pointing at the door.

Toby rose. "We will not."
Later he would reflect on how perfectly this had all worked out to show Maia the true visceral terror of some missions.
On a whim, Dari pulled his ring off and stuck it in his mouth. If Michael could scare the child, maybe he could too. There would be no love lost.

Alexander hesitated. He clearly hadn't anticipated Toby's refusal to leave. But its as Dari's true appearance that seemed to distress him most. His eyes were wide with terror. "Monster..." He whimpered and took a step back. He backed into the wall and vanished.

Dari's lips twitched almost imperceptibly. Monster. Right. With the ghost gone he sat back down and Michael lunged out of Maia's chest.
Michael touched Maia's shoulder. "I'm sorry. Are you alright?"
Toby put his hand on Maia's back. Well then. What a violent sort of christening.

Maia was shaking. She turned and wrapped her arms around Toby tightly. She didn't think she'd be coming out on another ghost mission. "You should go look for him," she muttered, looking at Michael.

Toby took Maia in his arms and kissed her hair. Dari put his ring back on and started to settle in. At least the temper tantrum had stopped.
Michael regarded Maia dully. "Do you think so? It took him a while to forgive me last time, and this time I told him he was dead."

"Last time he wasn't scared," Maia pointed out. She leaned against Toby. "A scared kid is worse an an angry kid. They're louder."

Michael nodded. Fine. He'd go harass the poor child now.
The most obvious point to start would be the nursery, which he blinked into easily.

Alexander was curled up in the crib. He had a blanket over his head. So the tech guy was a monster, were the others? Michael said he was dead. Was he a ghost, then? Was he, himself one? He sniffed and held the blanket around him tighter.
Someone was there. ... He moved the blanket slightly so he could look out. "Can you make the monster leave?" he asked.
