Some people have multiple accounts just because they want them.
Personally, I can't imagine doing that. I have enough of a hassle just keeping one up to date on everything and getting items, gold, etc.

or to hold precious items on a non-descript account that won't be so easily hacked. Or because they want to join guilds that they would rather not have others know about because it's embarassing (like S&M guilds). Or because they want a specific looking avatar for a very specific RP.
Or any number of reasons. It's not rocket science. For the same reason that it's so zany to have /just one/ account. it seems crazy unless you actually sit and realize not everyone has the same likes and dislikes.

I can relate. My rather prosperous WoW account was hacked and my stunning PvP Death Knight was made into a farmer. Dunno what happened to my Hunter and all his bank mules... confused
