Estrogen is produced by the corpus luteum for the first few weeks of pregnancy, but primarily by the placenta after the sixth of seventh week of pregnancy. Functions of estrogen during pregnancy include the following.
- Stimulating uterine growth
- Increasing blood supply tot he uterine vessels
Increasing uterine contractions near term
Aiding in the development of the glands and ductal system in the breasts in preparation for lactation.
